VOTE COUNTDOWN
Hello everyone.
If you have a spare couple of minutes please vote for Countdown in the 'Quiz Show' catergory in the TV Quick Awards 2009.
We all deserve a night on the razz, don't you think?!
Thank you for your support.

Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
Perhaps worth noting that you have to continue for several pages beyond the "best gameshow" category to actually submit your vote.

This is a superb attempt at persuading someone to vote, great stuffKate Horton wrote:We all deserve a night on the razz, don't you think?!
Edit: Although I wonder if they do something cunning like discount any votes coming from people who, say, only vote in one category.

If I were conducting a poll like this, I would be really suspicious of a show getting loads of votes from people who only vote in one category, since that would smell rather strongly of ballot stuffing.Charlie Reams wrote:How is that cunning?Michael Wallace wrote: Edit: Although I wonder if they do something cunning like discount any votes coming from people who, say, only vote in one category.

Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
Sure, but then what about only voting in 2 categories? 3? Where do you draw the line? Any voting system where you don't have a real mechanism for stopping duplicate voting is going to generate very questionable results.Michael Wallace wrote:If I were conducting a poll like this, I would be really suspicious of a show getting loads of votes from people who only vote in one category, since that would smell rather strongly of ballot stuffing.Charlie Reams wrote:How is that cunning?Michael Wallace wrote: Edit: Although I wonder if they do something cunning like discount any votes coming from people who, say, only vote in one category.

I voted for Coronation Street and Last of the Summer Wine in their respective categories because they are both institutions, and I voted for Antiques Roadshow because it is a modern classic.
And yes, I did vote for Countdown in the Best Quiz Show category.

Sounds like the newer ones were favoured, along with the brainless shite. Even Family Fortunes has been dumbed down with those absolutely godawful family introductions that make the blatantly staged clips in You've Been Framed look clever.Kate Horton wrote:The shortlist for the TV Quick Awards (Best Gameshow) were announced today.

Seriously though, I would agree that all those shows are a bit crap. They are lowest common denominator programming, but then this is TV Quick we are talking about. I would have expected so much more had it been the Radio Times!

I'm sorry Countdown has not made it to the final shortlist.
But Kate's recent post spurred me to go back to the TV Quick site and vote
for Being Human in the Best New Drama category.

It's a testament to how dumb people are that random box opening gets a place where Countdown doesn't. Really shocking.

You can pretty much break down all quiz shows into their most basic core components and suddenly they sound entirely uninspiring.Mark Harrison wrote:It's a testament to how dumb people are that random box opening gets a place where Countdown doesn't. Really shocking.
I fucking hate Deal or No Deal, but it's not just random box opening, just like Family Fortunes isn't just guessing survey results, and Countdown isn't just anagram solving.

Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
I don't think this is entirely fair, TBH. People are not being asked to vote for the most intellectually stimulating game show format; they're choosing their favourite, which brings in all sorts of other factors such as entertainment value, tension and emotional involvement. The stroke of genius that the UK producers of DOND had, which sets it apart from most other versions of the show around the world, is that of having the boxes opened by potential contestants instead of models. The fact that the regular audience gets to know a player over a period of several weeks' worth of daily shows before they take their place in the hot seat adds enormously to the audience's emotional investment in that player, as does the contestants' evident bonding with and support for each other. The fact that the game itself relies largely on luck and a gambling instinct, and not much skill other than an ability to gauge probabilities, is irrelevant.Mark Harrison wrote:It's a testament to how dumb people are that random box opening gets a place where Countdown doesn't. Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
What pisses me off about DOND is how it tries to take itself seriously as a strategic game. The only reason each show takes up 45 minutes is that they chat so much shit about the significance of numbers and the alleged wickedness of the banker etc. Annoyingly, its viewers seem to buy into this crap.

Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
Imagine a game show where a contestant is faced with an array of boxes containing unknown prizes. They're asked to choose one of the boxes, without knowing what's inside. Their chosen box is then opened, and whatever's inside is what the contestant wins. That's random box opening.james doohan wrote:Could you elaborate on what else it is? Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
Choosing to accept or reject the banker's offer is a distinctly non-trivial strategic decision. If it seems trivial then you haven't thought about it hard enough.james doohan wrote:Could you elaborate on what else it is? Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
What I said was a little unfair - but essentially, it's a game show for people who don't like game shows. The only decision the contestant has to make with any aspect of skill or judgement is the decision to take the money offered by the banker or not.
The fact that people come up with systems to 'beat the banker' (and that these are given credence) really irritates me - in addition to the quasi-religious terminology that abounds ('Crazy Chair', 'Walk of Wealth' etc.). The only investment made by the viewer is an emotional one, and as a consequence it only just qualifies as a game show at all.

Re: VOTE COUNTDOWN
Nah it's a gameshow for gullible halfwits.
It taps into the religious/superstitious/spiritual sort of person that can't find enough faith healing/psychic bullshit on TV. It then mixes in some trash reality show/'celebrity' gossip magazine elements.
Anyone with even the vaguest glimmer of intelligence will be insulted by the complete bollocks spouted by people on the show.
