If you get through your first round, there's no way you'll beat me in the second!Ian Volante wrote:You could say that...!Scott Gillies wrote:Not the draw you were looking for Ian? If you first game isnt hard enough your likely second is nasty lol
(Joking aside, the above is actually true.)

Re: Apterous Masters 2011
Qualifying game 7:
Nick Deller 95 - 74 Jim Bentley
Jim Bentley 82 - 101 Nick Deller
As soon I as I saw I'd got Nick in the draw, I pretty much knew that unless he was unexpectedly struck by lightning or was attacked by an axe-wielding madman, I wasn't getting through. And so it went. To my chagrin, my axe-wielding minion got lost on the way to his house and my attempts to harness the power of lightning were feeble at best. I should probably stop pinning my hopes on such things, it only leads to disappointment.

Yeah, very well played Ed. I still maintain that if I went to work and everyone but me was coughing and sneezing, I'd be the wellest one there. I wouldn't go round saying I'm the best. (Well I might, but not for that reason.)

Re: Apterous Masters 2011
WELL is a monosyllabic adjective, so by the rules of Countdown (as I understand them) weller and wellest needn't be specified, even though I think they sound daft. But then Susie quoted that rule for DOUR, which to my mind has 2 syllables anyway.Gavin Chipper wrote:I still maintain that if I went to work and everyone but me was coughing and sneezing, I'd be the wellest one there.

Just played Emily (Cox) in our qualifying game. 2-0 (105-85 and 101-71) to me overall, but both games were close affairs. Wp Emily.

This came up recently. Susie disallowed "wellest" because the comparative and superlative are specified to be "better" and "best".Adam Gillard wrote:WELL is a monosyllabic adjective, so by the rules of Countdown (as I understand them) weller and wellest needn't be specified, even though I think they sound daft. Re: Apterous Masters 2011
Just finished my qualifying games with Nick Deller. All games were very close, and it could easily have been anyone's. I ended up winning 2-1 after being 1-0 down.
Nick Deller 104-101 Josh Hurst
Nick Deller 97-103 Josh Hurst
Nick Deller 97-119 Josh Hurst
I was thinking about declaring just 7 in the final letters round, getting the numbers then effing up the conundrum so that I would be potentially the only player in the tourney to not dip below a century in any game, but then I thought that would be pretty lame so decided to win instead.

On a semi-related note I'm going to set a deadline of 11:59pm next Thursday (3rd March) to get all but the final round of qualifying matches done.

I asked for tips on how to beat Tom and it was suggested that I play him early in the morning as he may not be at his best then. So, I tried that tactic.
Final Score?

Matt got a nine in the first game which I was nowhere near, causing it to go to a crucial.
Cheers for the games.

Re: Apterous Masters 2011
Qualifier: Michael Wallace vs. Niall Seymour
Game 1: Neither of us played particularly well, but it was the most exciting of the three, going down to a crucial which neither of us could solve, leaving Niall the 88-85 winner.
Game 2: One of my best games in a very long time. 12 maxes (and would have been 13 if I hadn't convinced myself there had to be a 7 in R7), ended up 107-70 to me.
Game 3: A 9 gave me some breathing room, which quickly evaporated. Was pleased with SOLIDUS to get the +10 lead back, and ended up 94-78.

Pre-Pre-Qualifying
James Bradley 82 - 33 Rhys Benjamin
Couldn't capitalise on a nightmare 3rd half for James. I got 2 words before the time ran out, and couldn't put them in.
Rhys Benjamin 72 - 85 James Bradley
Round 10 was a bit of a squeeze and I was just on his tail. However a very easy Round 14 and an amazing conundrum spot by James makes it look like it was too easy for him.

Got an e-mail from Edwin Mead whilst I was in Prague to say the draw had been done, we'd been drawn together, all looked good for arrangement. E-mailed straight back, so this would have been, Wednesday morning I think, but not heard anything back since. I've also been on apterous at least an hour a day spread over a few logins, but yet to bump uglies with him.

Thanks for that, Ed. Sorry - with the new tournament system I was lazy about reporting it as it's already sorted on apterous. My bad.
For the record Scott, I keep signing in to see if you're about and you haven't been. Come home from the darky strip clubs, crack open a 'juice' and come find me.

With only 2 Q2 games left and both of them likely to be played tonight, the draw for round 1 proper will take place tonight at 7:30 pm. A reminder- round 1 games will be best-of-3 standard 15 rounders, just as with the qualifiers.
