On this day in this 1986 the World Snooker Championships became one of the memorable moments in Crucible history. The defending champion Dennis Taylor who won his only title in 1985 in dramatic fashion but fell victim to the crucible curse losing to Mike Hallett in the first round. Unfancied 150-1 outsider Joe Johnson who had never won a match at the Crucible Theatre caused a massive upset by defeating the world No 1 and three time champion Steve Davis who was the runner up from the previous year. However 1987 world championships was a completely different outcome it was the first time that the same two players had met in the final at the Crucible for the second year in a row. The 1986 champion Joe Johnson almost broke the infamous crucible curse but it was Steve Davis who was the eventual winner claiming his 4th title in empathic style. Joe Johnson retired from the sport in 2005 but after snooker he promoted the World Senior Championships six time world champion Steve Davis retired from the sport in 2016 but remains active in snooker as an analyst and pundit.
