Thursday 28th April 2011 (Series 64, Prelim 74)

Post by James Robinson »

Welcome to the pre-wedding Robinson Recap. Hopefully all the bunting is out in preparation for the big day. But don't forget to get your Countdown fix, which I can bring to you now.

Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Thursday 28 April 2011.

C1: Champion Scott Robson (2 wins, 197 points.) From Portsmouth, but supports Liverpool F.C. He loves golf and his favourite place in the world is Bali.
C2: Challenger Roger Edwards. From Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire. He works as a stamp dealer, basically buying and selling stamps to collectors. He's a keen chess player and is life vice-president of the English Chess Association. He used to run marathons pushing his son in a wheelchair, but gave them up for being too EASY!  As Jeff says, he has a new dangerous hobby, supporting Plymouth Argyle (who I'm hoping will beat Southampton on Monday. :D )
DC: Susie Dent and Dr. Phil Hammond.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: T S I G E A D V I

C1: VISITED (7)
C2: ADVISE (6)
DC: DATIVES (7)
OT: AGISTED (7) VISAGED (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

A good start by the champ who has taken the lead in round 1 in all of his games to date. 8-)

Round 2: M S M T L U O A E

C1: MOULTS (6)
C2: MALTOSE (7)
DC: AMULETS (7) SOULMATE (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 15)

But Roger gets back in immediately with his 8 as DC love their darrenic SOULMATE. :P :D

Round 3: R C A S E A B H O

C1: BROACHES (8)
C2: BROACHES (8)
Score: 15–15 (max 23)

DOUBLE DARREN
DOUBLE DARREN

Round 4: L N R V R E I O T

C1: virrolent
C2: INVERT (6)
DC: RETINOL (7) VIOLENT (7)
OT: LORINER (7)
Score: 15–21 (max 30)

WOAH, when Scott tried 9, I was thinking, "Has he gone mad :?: " I was right, he had. Just 7 is tops here, but Roger's 6 gives him the lead.

Round 5: 25, 10, 1, 7, 8, 10. Target: 246.

C1: 247.
C2: 246. (10 x 25) - (10 - 7 + 1) (10)
Score: 15–31 (max 40)

Not as straightforward as it might seem, and not a straightforward solution from Roger's mouth either, but he jutters his way to 10 points.

Dr. Phil talks about the new 367-page Health & Safety Care Bill, which is apparently bigger than the original bill that created the NHS over 60 years ago. :o

Teatime teaser: FITSFINE -> NIFFIEST

Round 6: U E A P D Q S M E

C1: PAUSED (6)
C2: SQUAD (5)
DC: AMUSED (6) MASQUE (6)
OT: MEDUSAE (7)
Score: 21–31 (max 47)

Ironically, what Roger liked to do in the numbers, he didn't find in the letters selection. And DC didn't get stung by the darrenic jellyfish 7 either.

A MEDUSA (plural MEDUSAE) is a saucer-shaped or dome-shaped, free-swimming jellyfish or hydra.

Round 7: Y R A D U I D S O

C1: druids
C2: SORDID (6)
DC: DYSURIA (7)
Score: 21–37 (max 54)

A bit of capital punishment on Scott here, as DC go darrenic with a bit of a painful wee.

Round 8: T D P N R A E O A

C1: DEPART (6)
C2: PANDER (6)
DC: PRONATED (8)
Score: 27–43 (max 62)

More darrenic goodness from DC, definitely getting it away from the downstairs area.

Round 9: C F I K O W E N E

C1: WINCE (5)
C2: FENCE (5)
DC: NIECE (5) WOKEN (5)
OT: ENOKI (5) KNIFE (5) KOINE (5) NEWIE (5)
Score: 32–48 (max 67)

There looked like there might be a weird 6 or 7 there, but clearly not, just some normal and unusual 5's.

An ENOKI is a thin, long-stemmed and tiny-capped white mushroom, Flamma velutipes, native to the northern mountain ranges of Japan and prized as a food.
A KOINE is an amalgam of Greek dialects, chiefly Attic and Ionic, that replaced the Classical Greek dialects in the Hellenistic period and flourished under the Roman Empire.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origin of "grog" and "cocktail".

Round 10: 10, 8, 1, 6, 3, 7. Target: 537.

C1: 536. (8 x 7 x 10) - ((3 + 1) x 6) (7)
C2: 544.
RR: 537. ((8 + 1) x 6 x 10) - 3 (10)
Score: 39–48 (max 77)

Roger's 6 small gamble backfires badly and Scott is now back in the game all of a sudden.

Teatime teaser: WASHBOOT -> SHOWBOAT

Round 11: F N U R A E T S A

C1: STARE (5)
C2: FASTEN (6)
DC: NURSE (5) AFTERSUN (8)
Score: 39–54 (max 85)

Clearly forgot their AFTERSUN after it appeared on Tuesday, but Roger's 6 repairs some of the damage made by his numbers choice.

Round 12: T S G N G E O I U

C1: TONGUES (7)
C2: GUESTING (8)
DC: GUNGIEST (8)
Score: 39–62 (max 93)

A brilliant 8 by Roger has now suddenly put him within touching distance of victory.

Round 13: L P E D A E N L I

C1: PLANED (6)
C2: PALLED (6)
DC: PALLID (6)
RR: PANELLED (8) :D
Score: 45–68 (max 101)

Am I not the only one who was surprised that DC couldn't find more than 6 :?: Well, Rachel teaches them a lesson with the darrenic 8. :D Roger also wraps up the game with his 6.

Round 14: 2, 5, 10, 1, 2, 7. Target: 493.

C1: 493. ((5 + 2) x 7 x 10) + 2 + 1 (10)
C2: 495.
Score: 55–68 (max 111)

Maybe Roger should think about ditching his 6 small strategy for tomorrow.

Round 15: H I T H I T T E R

No one buzzes. The answer was THIRTIETH.
Final Score: 55–68 (max 121)

Slightly rubbish timing for the conundrum as today was the 28th, but you can blame Damian for that I guess.

Well, after an impressive start to his Countdown career, Scott ends on a bum note I think it's safe to say, as the brilliance of his first 2 games seem to just vanish, leaving Roger to pick up the pieces. But can Roger carry on where Scott left off :?:

Join Mike tomorrow as we hit the three-quarter mark of the series.

I'll be back on Wednesday, so till then, bye bye.
