Having looked at this again, the decision to disallow was probably a fair one. SEWING is indeed given as a noun in COD7 (on which fact I probably based by comment at the time), but it is only mentioned in the sense of the act of sewing, so to be fair it's hard to see how it can be pluralised. This is a good example of the sort of thing that it was naively thought would be solved by the introduction of mass noun definitions in the NODE. :)
