After an extremely hot weekend (causing Jon O'Neill to wear a spectacular pair of shorts at Co:Lon) we are back to normality with the weather but the temperature in the studio remains hot as the competition for places in the finals heats up. Danny Pledger can book his place for the finals today.

Danny 'the baby faced assassin' Pledger is of course our roller coaster fanatic, although there have been hardly any dips in the champ's form as he won his sixth game on Friday.

Peter 'roller' Joint is a retired bank manager from Taunton, Somerset. He lives with his wife Angela and plays darts in a team called 'The Crafty Wurzels'. He also once sold a football annual for £500, bought for just 20p due to it containing Bill Shankly's signature.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: Y T R I A E V B A

C1: VARIETY (7)
C2: VARIETY (7)
DC: BREVITY (7) VARIATE (7)
OT: VIBRATE (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Maxes all round, everyone is awesome.

Round 2: T R G O A E W X U

C1: OUTGREW (7)
C2: OUTAGE (6)
DC: RAGOUT (6) OUTRAGE (7)
OT: OUTWEAR (7)
Score: 14–7 (max 14)

Even more awesome from Danny finding an OUT- word, and a nice one at that. An early lead for champ and still on a max game.

Round 3: D S E U I R L S E

C1: REUSED (6)
C2: SLIDERS (7)
DC: LEISURE (7) RESIDES (7) DESIRES (7) RESIDUES (8)
OT: LEISURED (8) REISSUED (8)
Score: 14–14 (max 22)

And the max game has gone. Fiddlesticks. And so is his lead. Darn it! SLIDERS is cool for Peter but Mr Stelling finds RESIDUES for 8. Nice one Jeff!

Round 4: R V A U S I A C S

C1: CAVIARS (7)
C2: CAVIAR (6)
DC: VICARS (6)
OT: ASCARIS (7) CUIRASS (7)
Score: 21–14 (max 29)

"Why oh why didn't I put the fecking 'S' on?" is what I lip read from Peter. (Possible exaggeration). Interesting 7's ASCARIS (genus of a parasitic nematode worm) and CUIRASS (medieval body armour for the back and chest). Never heard of any of them.

Round 5: 75, 8, 10, 5, 2, 1. Target: 808.

C1: 810. (10+1)*75-8-2-5 (7)
C2: 801.
RR: 808. (2*10+5+75+1)*8 (10)
Score: 28–14 (max 39)
Anon wrote:How did they miss 808 in that first numbers round?
A fairly routine numbers game beats Danny and Peter but not Jeff (hinted at) or Rachel. Thankfully Danny got to 810 though so snatches 7 points, even if his method was slightly made up on the spot. No harm in that, I''d be the first to agree!! Lead extended to 14 points.

DC guest anecdote time: Everyone's favourite ginger tells us about his comedy tour he's doing.

Teatime teaser: ACATCRAB -> BACCARAT

Round 6: N M T O E I C N T

C1: INTONE (6)
C2: NOTICE (6)
DC: OINTMENT (8)
Score: 34–20 (max 47)

I was sitting happily with TONEMIC to beat the contestants but Dr Phil fittingly gets OINTMENT. Danny's lead remains 14 points.

Round 7: S H F A E I S F E

C1: FISHES (6)
C2: FISHES (6)
DC: FASHES (6)
OT: SHEAFS (6)
Score: 40–26 (max 53)

Just sixes on offer here does little to the scores.

Round 8: D N G I L T O I E

C1: TINGLED (7)
C2: DILIGENT (8)
DC: LENTOID (7)
Score: 40–34 (max 61)

Wow. What's this? Spot of the game so far. The darren from Peter beats Danny, DC and me.

Round 9: R S Q I O E T G L

C1: LOITERS (7)
C2: LOITERS (7)
DC: GOITRES (7) GLORIES (7)
OT: GLISTER (7) GRISTLE (7) GORIEST (7) LOGIEST (7) TOILERS (7)
Score: 47–41 (max 68)

Easy round for both contestants, plenty of sevens to pick from and they pick the same one. Copycats!

Round 10: 25, 7, 6, 10, 2, 5. Target: 344.

C1: 344. 7*2*25-6 (10)
C2: 345.
Score: 57–41 (max 78)

Nice numbers from Danny establishes a 10+ points gap much to his relief as both contestants relax and listen to Susie.

Origin of Words: Susie tells us why the Elephant & Castle pub's got their name. Riveting.

Teatime teaser: DECKBOSS -> BEDSOCKS

Round 11: P L N U O E W C O

C1: UNCOOL (6)
C2: COUPLE (6)
DC: COUPON (6)
OT: POUNCE (6)
Score: 63–47 (max 84)

Danny is looking good for win number 7 as both match each other in a dull round with nothing but sixes to choose from.

Round 12: P S N A E P U R T

C1: ENTRAPS (7)
C2: PUNTERS (7)
DC: PEANUTS (7) PUPATES (7) UPRATES (7)
OT: PARENTS (7) PASTERN (7) TREPANS (7) NAPPERS (7) PARPENS (7) SNAPPER (7) NATURES (7) SAUNTER (7) PASTURE (7) PAUPERS (7) PRENUPS (7) PUNSTER (7) SUNTRAP (7) UNSTRAP (7) TAPPERS (7)
Score: 70–54 (max 91)

And another easy round with a pocketful of 7's available. (Big pockets)

Round 13: J G N D A O E T A

C1: TANGOED (7)
C2: DONATE (6)
Score: 77–54 (max 98)

Thats it! The nail in the coffin. Danny the champion of the words seals the victory. Smell it. It's the smell of success.

Round 14: 50, 75, 10, 6, 1, 4. Target: 390.

C1: 391.
C2: 390. (50-6-4-1)*10 (10)
Score: 77–64 (max 108)

Peter still has a little to say and he solves 390 very tidily. But Danny couldn't give a flying f*** he's coming back for finals day baby.

Round 15: S N I D E D I G S

No one buzzes. The answer was GIDDINESS.
Score: 77–64 (max 118)

Rachel solves the conundrum showing her competence at the words as well as the numbers. And she wins a mug to go with that beautiful one of hers.

Well thats it. Peter takes home his goody bag whilst Danny marches on to the finals and a chance to become the second octochamp. Will it be third time lucky for a 7 time series 62 winner or will he be toppled like Zyss and Wilko? Only time will tell.

(I consumed a lot of chocolate before this recap, I was feeling quite hyperactive.)

I didn't have time to watch the show yesterday, so I was playing along this morning when I hit it.

I gave myself the 10 points anyway 8-)

Danny had 488 points at the start of this game, Ryan. It seems that Mike made the original mistake and you've decided to add to the irregular score.
