Welcome to just about the only place today which is a guaranteed No-Election Zone. So, enjoy, before election fever spreads.

Countdown recap for Thursday 6 May 2010.

C1: Champion Lee Graham (4 wins, 338 points.) From London. He works as a magazine and book editor. His most memorable experience was meeting Les Dennis and hearing his impression of Mavis Riley, which Lee can also do.
C2: Challenger Rob Chapman. From West Kirby, The Wirral. He's a public policy manager. He supports Walsall F.C. and enjoys playing squash, cricket and racketball. Rob says the most dangerous thing he's ever done is teach his 3 sons to drive and he has the grey hairs to prove it.
DC: Susie Dent and Kate Humble.
RR: Rachel Riley. (Hopefully, her voice will be much better by the time my double bill arrives next week. ;) :) :D )
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: D T S F A O A S E

C1: FASTED (6)
C2: FEASTS (6)
DC: FATSOES (7)
Score: 6–6 (max 7)

Round 2: L C O A L T E R M

C1: COLLATE (7)
C2: collater
OT: CALOMEL (7) CORELLA (7) OCELLAR (7) CORMLET (7) CROTALE (7) REALLOT (7)
Score: 13–6 (max 14)

Ouch, Lee takes the early lead, as Rob adds the incorrect suffix to COLLATE there.

CALOMEL is a white, tasteless powder, Hg2Cl2, used chiefly as a purgative and fungicide.
OCELLAR means pertaining to an OCELLUS, a type of simple eye common to invertebrates, consisting of retinal cells, pigments, and nerve fibres.

Round 3: E A U G K S R S L

C1: SULKERS (7)
C2: gravel
OT: ARGUSES (7) SAUGERS (7) LARGESS (7)
Score: 20–6 (max 21)

A good 7 by Lee, as Rob straightens his U to a fake V.

An ARGUS is a giant with 100 eyes in classical mythology.

Round 4: V N X E E U D D A

C1: EXUDED (6)
C2: VENDED (6)
DC: AVENUE (6) UNDEAD (6)
OT: DAVENED (7)
Score: 26–12 (max 28)

Weirdly, Rob's missing V from the last round appears at the start of the next round.

DAVENED, comes from DAVEN, which is the Yiddish word for "to pray".

Round 5: 25, 6, 7, 5, 2, 3. Target: 278.

C1: 278. ((5 + 6) x 25) + 3 (10)
C2: 278. ((5 + 6) x 25) + 3 (10)
Score: 36–22 (max 38)

Kate talks about the early days of Springwatch, when it was known as Wild In Your Garden, when they did 2 shows a day, including a night stint between 11:20pm and midnight.

Teatime teaser: KIWIEELS -> LIKEWISE

Round 6: N H W I E A T R J

C1: WINTER (6)
C2: WINTER (6)
DC: HAIRNET (7) TAWNIER (7)
OT: TARWHINE (8)
Score: 42–28 (max 46)

Round 7: M D C N E O N A G

C1: DECAGON (7)
C2: CONNED (6)
DC: CONDEMN (7)
OT: CONGAED (7)
Score: 49–28 (max 53)

Round 8: T W C I E E S T B

C1: TWEETS (6)
C2: WEBSITE (7)
Score: 49–35 (max 60)

A brilliant darren by Rob puts him right back in the game.

Round 9: T H N P A O U V E

C1: HAVEN (5)
C2: HAUNT (5)
DC: PHONATE (7) PHAETON (7)
Score: 54–40 (max 67)

DC spot both available 7's in this one.

Susie's Origin Of Words talks about the origins of "paparazzi", "Mrs. Robinson", "dumbo", "Tarzan", "Mini Me" and "groovy".

Round 10: 75, 7, 8, 4, 1, 3. Target: 641.

C1: 641. ((75 + 4) x 8) + 7 + 3 - 1 (10)
C2: 640.
Score: 64–40 (max 77)

Lee's lead goes back above 20 again, with that solve.

Teatime teaser: WASHBOOT -> SHOWBOAT

Round 11: D T P O E I Y P R

C1: TRIPPED (7)
C2: RIPPED (6)
DC: PERIDOT (7)
OT: DIOPTRE (7)
Score: 71–40 (max 84)

Ouch. That has got to hurt. That also might his chances of winning the match today.

Round 12: S N F Z O A O R O

C1: ROOFS (5)
C2: SONAR (5)
DC: RAZOOS (6)
Score: 76–45 (max 90)

Round 13: S R M N A E I R Q

C1: MARINERS (8)
C2: SEMINAR (7)
DC: MARINES (7)
Score: 84–45 (max 98)

And Lee wraps up the game with that darren.

Round 14: 100, 25, 50, 5, 9, 10. Target: 365.

C1: -
C2: 365. ((50 + 25) x 5) - 10 (10)
Score: 84–55 (max 108)

A good numbers solve by Rob restores some pride.

Round 15: C O L D E R S U N

C1 buzzes on 27.5 seconds to say SCOUNDREL which is correct.
Score: 94–55 (max 118)

A very late solve by Lee there gives him his 2nd consecutive 94 in a row. That's now 5 wins for the Londoner. A win tomorrow will see him break into the top 8.

Will he do it :?: Join Gordon...., no sorry, Mike Brown tomorrow to find out. He might be the only Mr. Brown smiling tomorrow.

Till next Wednesday from me, bye bye.
