Apparently it is world maths day, something which has taken me entirely by surprise because Google haven't done a special logo for it.

It seems that students are being encouraged to answer as many maths questions as possible in a 48 hour period, in an attempt to set a World Maths Record (oooooooh), but it looks like you have to be at school to enter (boo).

Neither of my maths teachers knew it was world maths day.

I only knew it was World Maths Day as I was heading back from Wembley during the night.

Listening to Tony Livesey's Radio 5 Live show just after midnight, they gave 2 maths questions, one simple and the other requiring some thought.

The first one was: "A man (or woman) goes into a shop and buys a games console with a battery for £101. If the battery costs £100 less than the console, how much does the battery cost

The funny thing was that the first person to answer gave the answer of £1.

Then the second one was how many squares can you make on a standard chessboard

The correct answer was given by the Series 35 champion of Countdown (Unfortunately, I forgotten his name, I think it was Peter something)

Good question, which reminds me of one I was once given at school.

It was the standard chessboard puzzle, except that the only restriction was that corners of the squares you had to make had to be where lines on the chessboard intersect.

When I was at college, we went on the site during a maths lesson, I managed to get 60 in a minute once.
