The outstanding Wallace/Nguyen qualifying game has been adjudicated as a loss for both players- Nick gets a bye into the second round of the tourney proper. That leaves just 5 1/2 (or 5 2/3) first round games that need to be played- obviously there's still three whole days in which to play them, but the sooner the first round games are completed, the sooner the second round can begin...

Lloyd is without PC until the weekend, so we're going to be cutting it fine.

This is hilariously stupid and unfair.

Where the fuck is the logic in that?

Ryan has conceded his game as he's taking an ill-timed sabbatical from apterous right now, leaving just Hare/Laddiman (scheduled for 2pm tomorrow), O'Neill/Pettet and Howe/Tournoff as the outstanding R1 games. The draw for round 2 will take place tomorrow at 7pm (or earlier if games are completed in time). A reminder that all round 2 games will be best-of-5.

Otherwise, pretty much that time any night this week is good for me, cheers.

I'll see if I can make that, Corby. It'll just depend how quickly I can get the recap sorted out. ;) :) :D

Just one 2nd round game is outstanding, but as I have no doubts it'll be completed in plenty of time, the draw for the best-of-7 quarter-finals will take place tonight at 10pm. :)

Here's the quarters draw-

Kirk Bevins vs Charlie Reams
Dinos Sfyris vs Innis Carson
Mark or Lloyd vs Jon Corby
Chris Davies vs Edward McCullagh

Games are best-of-7, the deadline is March 27th, and they'll be on the apterous tourney manager asap. Good luck all. :)

Looks like the matches haven't been put in the system yet, but here's me vs Dinos:

Innis 102-76 Dinos

Dinos 100-106 Innis

Innis 107-96 Dinos

Dinos 104-115 Innis

The last two were crucials, and Dinos chickened an 8 in game 2, so 4-0 is a rather harsh result.

Innis is too modest. Thought I might have pushed him to 4-1 but I certainly wouldn't have won 4, and they were fun games so I'm happy. Some cool numbers games as well. I might have to venture into learning my 19 times table!

The semis have been drawn-

Ed plays Jon or Mark

best-of-9 action. :D

Tournoff v Corby results:
102 - 135
104 - 87
111 - 83
81 - 93
76 - 117
105 - 88
88 - 86

So basically I won 689-667 on aggregate.

(Congrats Mark, thoroughly enjoyed the games, it was hardcore for 2 hours!)

APTEROUS MASTERS SEMI-FINAL RESULT:

Edward McCullagh 5-1 Mark Tournoff

Mark Tournoff 96 - 101 Edward McCullagh

I got into an early 13 point lead before Mark's brilliant 4 large solve saw him claw the deficit back. TRAVAILS to my trivials[x] gave Mark the lead and he kept it until the conundrum which I solved pretty sharpish to win a very close game.

Edward McCullagh 109 - 92 Mark Tournoff

Another crucial conundrum, this time with me being in the lead at the crucial thanks to spotting CORVEES earlier on. Once again, I edge in just in front of Mark to snatch another win on the conundrum.

Mark Tournoff 84 - 97 Edward McCullagh

AVOUCHED, PINWORM and INCLOSED (all Darrens) mean I seal a 3-0 lead before the conundrum. Great solve by Mark though, I was stuck on SLIGHTDOM :?

Edward McCullagh 112 - 89 Mark Tournoff

Neck-and-neck up until round 12, I spot CONOID in a tricky round, and the max but not the target in a tough 4 large to win it before the conundrum and go into a commanding 4-0 lead. Surely I can't feck this up?!

Oh, and UNSEXIEST

Mark Tournoff 97 - 72 Edward McCullagh

:| Spoke too soon! Mark wins convincingly with some very nice spots as I begin to tire and crumble. The comeback is on!

Edward McCullagh 119 - 95 Mark Tournoff

Comeback off! :) Very tight up until round 11 and I thought my eyes were gonna fall out of their sockets I was beginning to get so tired and fed up of Countdown! Luckily I managed to spot two nines fairly late in each round to win. Pretty unfair on Mark who was a top opponent and could easily have been 2-0 up after the first two.

Can't wait for the final but I'm definitely not wanting to play it in one go even though it'll be 6-0 to Kirk/Innis :P

Innis beats the champ 5-3 in possibly the best series of matches ever seen on apterous.

That means we have ourselves a cracker of a final- series 61 semi-finalist and destroyer of worlds (um, in an apterous sense anyway) Innis Carson vs current series octochamp and man from Ireland Ed McCullagh. 1st vs 5th in proranks, and both have ratings of over 2000, so this one's gonna be immense. Have some stats:

Innis has won 14 games and lost just 4. His highest score is 130- ironically, from a losing game- and his lowest- his only non-century in those 18 games- was 96 (ironically, from a winning game). His average score is 112, and along the way he's had to knock out top-calibre players like James Hurrell, record-breaker Jack Hurst, Dinos Sfyris and the small matter of the reigning champion of everything Kirk Bevins.

Ed had to go through the qualifying stage- which he won't need to do from now on- so he's won 18 games and also lost just 4. His highest is 119, his lowest 72- both of which came from consecutive games (indeed, the final 2 games of his semi-final against Mark). Ed's average score is 101. Along the way Ed's knocked out the veteran and recent recipient of a non-internet based identity Gevin Chapwell, apterous up-and-comers Thomas Cappleman and Chris Hare, and the small matter of no fewer than three series champions in the shape of Oliver Garner, Chris Davies and Mark Tournoff. Nobody's yet managed to take more than one game off of Ed in a match- will the final be a different matter?

Head to head on apterous the scores currently stand at 87-25 in Innis's favour, but Ed's had plenty of recent victories. Form would suggest a Carson victory here, but whatever the result, you know we're gonna be guaranteed some amazing games. :D

Very well done Innis - deserving champion

Innis was absolutely fantastic and would have ravaged anyone on that form - always enjoy playing against him even when I get completely thrashed :P

I sort of crumbled after the fifth game which I would have won had I not gone for IMBURSES [x] and who knows what would have happened at 2-3 (probably would have ended 2-6 still) but delighted to win one game :)

And thanks for organising a quality tournament, Ben and Charlie, especially with the new features. Can't wait for the next one :D

Cheers Ed! It certainly wasn't a thrashing, was feeling the pressure right up until the last round. Great games, and well played.

Thanks Ben for organising it as usual, and to Charlie for the great new tournament system which made the whole thing much more streamlined. Personally I'm just delighted to have finally made it past round 1.
