Spoilers For Thursday October 21st 2010
After a relaxing break in the Channel Islands, I'm now fully up to speed with the goings on in Countdown, and at this moment in time, tomorrow might be a monumental day.
Current champ (do I have to remind you ) Jack Hurst is on fire with 703 points from his first 6 games. Interestingly, just above him in the rankings are Michael Chadwick and Peter Godwin, who in their 8 games scored 705 and 706 points, respectively, meaning Jack is just a smidge behind them having played 2 games less
As you are probably aware the octochamp points scoring record held by Andrew Hulme is 930 points, meaning that Jack needs 228 more (as well as the 2 wins obviously) to overtake Andrew. Can he do it
I'll be around with the Robinson Recap later on.

CTDAEIFSH was the original selection in that round. It had to be re-filmed.

Re: Spoilers For Thursday October 21st 2010
Can't remember which number the round was, but the one where Alex declared SHAFTED and Jack declared HARDIEST. The reason is because there was a rather rude 8 which you wouldn't have heard of, Rhys. The D cannot be added onto the end if you work it out, otherwise it'd be hyphenated.Rhys Benjamin wrote:Which Round?Josh Hurst wrote:CTDAEIFSH was the original selection in that round. No, missed PERENTIE in the round where he declared POINTER. 133/134 though, not too shabby at all I'd say.Ben Hunter wrote:Is he on for a max game here...
The 8 was SHITFACE Rhys. It was pretty funny in the studio when it happened. Jack just started laughing pretty much as soon as the last letter came out. Buried his head on the desk, it was awesome.

That's presumably referring to 4chan, but I've not heard of "king of /b/", but I am not a /b/-tard, so that is perhaps why.JackHurst wrote:Someone posted this on my facebook event:

Re: Spoilers For Thursday October 21st 2010
Yeah PERENTIE for a beater but even with that it was 116-116 at the conundrum and I just couldn't live with Jack's speed on the conundrum so I'm beaten again, twice in a week. Mate, you're fucking awesome and a great bloke to boot. Now do what you deserve to do and smash 95 tomorrow.
Edit: Why were you sucking cock after you'd solved the round 10 numbers game?

You'll so be hoping for that, won't you, AndrewAndrew Hulme wrote:one time? http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=273543
Phenomenal again, Jack. Interestingly, that 133 is the highest score on the show when the contestant just got 1 nine-letter word, beating the previous best of 131, got by Tom Hargreaves against Ben Wilson in CoC XI.
A nice appropriate 8 in round 2 was OCTAGONS.
2nd Numbers Alt.: (75 x 8) + (5 x 10) + 3 = 653

Under Gevin scoring (nine points for a nine), Jack's score was 124, which I'm fairly sure is a record. Tom Hargreaves got 122 once (actual score of 131) which I think was the record.
I wondered about HEADFIRST in the HARDIEST round but apparently not, and apparently they weren't even the "real" letters. But I was happy with 90 today, without getting the 9.

Jack, being the smug bastard that he is, also mentioned HEADFIRST^ to Alistair McGowan after he had suggested FISHTRADE^.Gavin Chipper wrote:Under Gevin scoring (nine points for a nine), Jack's score was 124, which I'm fairly sure is a record. Re: Spoilers For Thursday October 21st 2010
It's a bit strange in NODE1 (I don't have NODE2 so can't comment about that) but "head first" is shown as two words in the lead entry, but within the definition it's used in an example as head-first. Not that it matters for Countdown purposes because it's disallowed either way, but what would be the position if it had been spelt headfirst in the definition?

Re: Spoilers For Thursday October 21st 2010
It'd be disallowed. It happens a lot in ODE2r - a word in the definition isn't defined in the dictionary anywhere.David Roe wrote:It's a bit strange in NODE1 (I don't have NODE2 so can't comment about that) but "head first" is shown as two words in the lead entry, but within the definition it's used in an example as head-first. Not really, only twice that we know of.Kirk Bevins wrote: It happens a lot in ODE2r - a word in the definition isn't defined in the dictionary anywhere.
Also, it says in the intro that the hyphenations given are only examples and not meant to exclude alternatives, so it's probably justified on that basis.

I definitely replied to this. Where's it gone?David Roe wrote:It's a bit strange in NODE1 (I don't have NODE2 so can't comment about that) but "head first" is shown as two words in the lead entry, but within the definition it's used in an example as head-first. Edit - Anyway, what I said was that a hyphen is used because of its position in the sentence - "a head-first slide" whereas you would also say "the slide was head first". But I don't think this would ever turn two words into one without even a hyphen. It would be like calling someone a not-at-all-bald chap, if he had all his hair.
