Where does the name, "plate game," come from?

Re: Plate round 1 Sfyris vs Somerset
The first time I ever heard of the term plate in this sense was at Wimbledon tennis tournaments. The losers of the first two rounds of the main tournaments were invited to enter a subsidiary tournament, which then ran in parallel with the main tournament. Presumably the name plate was due to the prize being a plate, rather than a cup, or bowl.Jason Larsen wrote:Where does the name, "plate game," come from?
The same idea operates in this COOT tournament, though in this case I don't think Jono is going to be awarding a plate to the winner. No doubt the name plate comes from the Wimbledon idea, or maybe both the Wimbledon and the COOT plate competitions derive from some other common source.

Re: Plate round 1 Sfyris vs Somerset
I'm sorry, Charlie.
I just re-read Howard's post, and he says that Jon O'Neill is not going to be giving away a plate for a prize.
