The Cryptic Countdown Forummers Comp - 2010
Just realised it is within days of two years since I posted a similar competition so I thought it was time for another to see if it is just as popular.... or not.
I have compiled ten clues where each answer is the name of a member of this illustrious forum. Each answer has at least two words, first name and surname. I cannot tell you the numbers of letters in each word otherwise it will be too easy. Two points available for each correct answer: 1 point for the full name, the other point for a few words as to how you arrived at the answer (Max points therefore: 20).
To enter the competition, email me - by using the PM box under the avatar - with as many answers as you can. The prize will probably be a DVD or something for the person with the highest score. I will regularly update the highest score until 20 is reached. Closing date will be when we all get fed up.

1. Miniature railway has Dec's mate with layabout as an alternative.
2. Little boy, little girl and big boy get to the islands first.
3. Not men again! Oh no!
4. Rape, one ranks, is terrible.
5. All one wants, we hear, is to end the war.
6. Warm her naughty bird!
7. Requested more of TV's lone doctor.
8. Amis' lucky car.......
9. ….....whereas in Falkirk, Bev insures her car with a hefty discount.
10. Doors lead to photo finish for first.

No, hang on I am not your father. You can enter. Tell your milkman he is not allowed to enter.
Howard is PM-ing me with one answer at a time, and he's not doing too badly either....

Awesome stuff. 7 out of 10 so far, can't be bothered to submit until I get all 10, which probably means I'll never actually enter. Fun distraction though.

I've been dipping into these from about 11am and I only have 3 that I'm sure of. I have answers for 5, 8 and 10 but can't fully explain them and I'm completely missing 2, 3, 6 and 7.

Re: The Cryptic Countdown Forummers Comp - 2010
Just popped out for a few hours to go self-scanning shopping at Waitrose (we are very posh round here), but inadvertently scanned the tattoo of the barcode on my left arm so ended up paying £3.50 more than I needed. Oh well. Great reaction to this so far, thanks, I think the closing date will be sooner than I originally thought...!

I think I've just got number 2, but perhaps I am just forcing the name I have around the clue. Got possible answers for other blanks (3 and 7) but the explanations are pretty shit so I reckon I haven't got them

Re: The Cryptic Countdown Forummers Comp - 2010
Michael Wallace got 18, me son got 20 but he was not eligible as he has the same brain patterns as me and therefore had an unfair advantage.
1. Miniature railway (RY) has Dec's mate (ANT) with layabout (AYL - 'about' indicates an anagram) as an alternative (OR) = RYAN TAYLOR
2. Little boy, (LAD) little girl (DI- shortened version of Diana) and big boy (MAN) get to the islands (KAI islands are in Indonesia) first (indicates to put KAI first) = KAI LADDIMAN
3. Not men again! Oh no! = EOIN MONAGHAN (anagram of men again oh no- the 'not' indicates the anagram)
4. Rape, one ranks, is terrible = KAREN PEARSON (anagram of rape one ranks- the 'is terrible' indicates an anagram).
5. All one wants, we hear (PHIL, sounds like fill, as in "I've had my fill"), is to end the war (MAKE PEACE) = PHIL MAKEPEACE
6. Warm (HEAT) her (HER) naughty (BAD) bird (COCK) ! = HEATHER BADCOCK
7. Requested more (OLIVER of Twist fame) of TV's lone doctor (RANGER doctored = GARNER) = OLIVER GARNER (The Lone Ranger being a well known TV series from days gone past so hope you had heard of it!)
8. Amis' lucky car.......(Kingsley Amis wrote 'Lucky JIM' made into a successful film) and the car was a BENTLEY = JIM BENTLEY.
9. ….....whereas in Falkirk, Bev insures her car with a hefty discount. = KIRK BEVINS - you all got that! 'In' quite often indicates the answer is written into the clue.
10. Doors lead (singer as in Jim MORRISON) to photo finish (basically two types of finishes on photos - Gloss and MATT) for first (indicates to put MATT first) = MATT MORRISON

Aaaah, so that's what 7 was. Awesome. I'm a bit annoyed because I assumed it was some TV reference I wouldn't get (because I don't really watch much TV), but obviously I should've done. Clever stuff.

Well done, Chris. Great puzzle. Very annoyed with myself for not getting any more than I did. I like the explanations of those which I didn't. I was definitely on the wrong track for some of them, though I was close with GLOSS JIM for number 10.
And well done, Michael, for winning, and Jon for your performance.
Looking forward to 2012. Hope I'm still around.
