Tuesday 9th March 2010 (Series 62, Prelim 42)

Post by James Robinson »

Following Oliver's slight mistake with the recaps last week, I time travel back to 8 days ago for this special edition of the Robinson Recap. ;) :) :D  8-)

Countdown recap for Tuesday 9 March 2010.

C1: Champion Kevin Davis (1 win, 93 points.) From Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. He works for the NHS as a hospital appointment booker. He supports Arsenal, unlike Rachel, who supports that team who play at Old Trafford :x , but like Susie, who also supports the Gunners.
C2: Challenger Stevan Ryan. From Hartlepool, County Durham. He works as a property consultant. He actually lives not far away from Jeff's mum, in the part of the world that Jeff refers to as the "North East Riviera". His hobbies include classical music, current affairs and ancient history. He was in Indo-China for 10 years, where he experienced elephant trekking, flying tigers and after just 2 weeks there in 1992, he was shot in the foot during a pro-democracy demonstration in Bangkok. :o
DC: Susie Dent and Pam Ayres.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: G I H T O S E D N

C1: HOSTING (7)
C2: HOSTING (7)
DC: GHOSTED (7) HEDONIST (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8)

DC might have the darren, but both players get off the blocks at the first.

Round 2: I R E T U P O P F

C1: PROFIT (6)
C2: foppier
DC: frump POUTIER (7)
OT: FRIPPET (7)
Score: 13–7 (max 15)

Stevan's dubious 7 is just that. Also, someone should tell Pam that there is no M in the selection.

A FRIPPET is a frivolous, young woman. (I wonder how many FRIPPETs there are that we know of :? )

Round 3: G A E L M S A S U

C1: SAUSAGE (7)
C2: gumless
DC: MASSAGE (7)
OT: ASSUAGE (7)
Score: 20–7 (max 22)

Stevan must've have found that SAUSAGE hard to swallow as he can't be GUMLESS.

Round 4: N I N R Q E O L F

C1: FINER (5)
C2: FLORIN (6)
DC: INFERNO (7)
Score: 20–13 (max 29)

But, he coined that 6 very nicely, as DC blaze in glory with their darrenic 7.

Round 5: 75, 25, 100, 1, 3, 8. Target: 632.

C1: 632. (3 + 1 + 75) x 8 (10)
C2: 629.
Score: 30–13 (max 39)

After Stevan almost declared 829, Kevin takes the 10 points with his solution.

Pam reads out a poem about finding the right man called "I Still Haven't Given Up Hope".

Teatime teaser: LETBIRDS -> DRIBLETS

Round 6: R A C I T S L N A

C1: RACIST (6)
C2: RACIST (6)
DC: CRANIAL (7)
OT: CANTRAILS (18)
Score: 36–19 (max 57)

DC use their brain to get CRANIAL, but the darrenic 9 passes everyone by.

Round 7: S E V K I E L D R

C1: REVILED (7)
C2: DRIVEL (6)
DC: SKIVER (6) DELIVERS (8)
OT: SILVERED (8) SLIVERED (8)
Score: 43–19 (max 65)

Interesting that Stevan doesn't add the S on for 7, so Kevin pulls further ahead.

SILVERED is simply, something coated or plated silver.

Round 8: S C Y N S B A O A

C1: BACONS (6)
C2: BOSSY (5)
OT: SABAYONS (8)
Score: 49–19 (max 73)

The pluralised food rule gives Kevin more breathing space.

Round 9: T H O D O I C L A

C1: CLOTH (5)
C2: CLOTH (5)
DC: LATCH (5) COITAL (6)
OT: CHALOT (6) CHITAL (6) COOLTH (6) DACOIT (6) HOODIA (6) LOCHIA (6) OOLITH (6) THOLOI (6)
Score: 54–24 (max 79)

A CHITAL (more commonly known as the AXIS DEER) is an Asian deer of India and Sri Lanka, having a reddish-brown coat spotted with white.
LOCHIA is the liquid discharge from the uterus after childbirth.
THOLOI (plural of THOLOS) were circular buildings in classical architecture.

Rachel sits down in the hotseat as she takes on Susie's Guess The Origin game.
She has to guess which is the correct origin of the word TANTALISE.

Is it:
a) The name of the tarantula, which in turn was named after the region in Apulia, Italy, where it was first found. A tarantula famously stays motionless until it strikes, so, it tantalises its prey.
b) The mythical king, Tantalus, who was the son of Zeus and who incurred the wrath of the Gods, because he betrayed some of their secrets to mortals and whose torments were horrific and involved tantalising him in all sorts of horrible ways.
c) The first things to tantalise were perfumes, which were made by alchemists from the mineral tantalite, which are black lustrous crystals that made the headiest of scents.

Rachel guesses c), but the answer was b).

Round 10: 25, 6, 8, 10, 1, 6. Target: 438.

C1: 438. ((10 + 8) x 25) - 6 - 6 (10)
C2: 438. ((10 + 8) x 25) - 6 - 6 (10)
Score: 64–34 (max 89)

Teatime teaser: EERYOVEN -> EVERYONE

Round 11: M E N O M T E S U

C1: MEMENTOS (8)
C2: MOMENTS (7)
DC: OMENS (5)
Score: 72–34 (max 97)

A brilliant darren there by Kevin, sees him edge closer to that 2nd victory.

Round 12: R E E I P G D T M

C1: DEMERIT (7)
C2: PRIMED (6)
DC: MERITED (7) EMPTIED (7)
OT: DIMETER (7) RETIMED (7) DEMIREP (7) EMPTIER (7)
Score: 79–34 (max 104)

And that wraps it up.

A DEMIREP is a demimondaine, which is a woman of the demimonde, a class of women from the late 19th Century, who have lost their standing in respectable society because of indiscreet behavior or sexual promiscuity.

Round 13: R A E S D N O X I

C1: OXIDES (6)
C2: EXORDIA (7)
DC: ANEROIDS (8) SARDINE (7)
OT: ANODISER (8)
Score: 79–41 (max 112)

Not all Kevin's way, as that 7 stops Kevin from getting a possible century.

Round 14: 100, 9, 8, 9, 1, 8. Target: 776.

C1: 775. ((100 - 1) x 8) - 8 - 9 (7)
C2: -
RR: 776. ((100 - 1 - (9 / 9)) x 8) - 8 (10)
Score: 86–41 (max 122)

Tricky numbers if you don't quite know your 8 times table, but Kevin gets 7 and Rachel shows us how its done.

Round 15: T E C H Y T W I T

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say WITCHETTY which is correct.
Score: 96–41 (max 132)

So, Kevin grubby conundrum solve seals his win. Will he continue his run :?: Find out tomorrow with the Robinson Recap regular double.

Till then, bye bye.
