Sporcle
After a couple of other people mentioned Sporcle in Michael's Pointless thread, I took it upon myself to compile a Sporcle quiz on Countdown champions. So dust off your anoraks, give it a go and (most importantly?) tell me whose names I've misspelt.

Re: Sporcle
Good quiz...I only got 25 out of 73 shamefully and when the answers were revealed I was kicking myself for missing several simple ones. What did strike me was when I checked other people's answers (4 people had taken it so far), 1 person got the following name:
Rajaretnam Yogasagarar
How the heck did they get that (and spell it correctly!?). I wonder if he took the quiz (or cheated)!

Haha, that was me. I wasn't cheating, I only remembered the surname right though. And I think I got about 50-ish overall.Kirk Bevins wrote:What did strike me was when I checked other people's answers (4 people had taken it so far), 1 person got the following name:

Also if you see the most missed it's essentially a popularity contest of all the series champions and one name so far hasn't been missed by anyone!

Anyone tried the countries of the world one?
the best I can get is 181/195- it's so annoying.

If I suddenly have a squirming baby on my lap it probably means that I should start paying it some attention and stop wasting my time messing around on a Countdown forum

I don't know how you approach it, but trying doing it in increasing continental country numbers (so South America, Oceania, North America, Europe, Asia, Africa). Knowing how many countries are in each continent makes it much easier to work out which ones you're missing — you're working towards 12, then 26, then 49, then 96, then 142, then 195. Within each continent, it's good to have an order you do them in. By doing them in the same order every time, you'll be less likely to miss ones out. Also, try grouping the countries within continents. In Oceania, there's the three big ones (Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea) the other rugby-playing countries (Fiji, Samoa, Tonga), the island groups (Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands) and the weird ones (Nauru, Palau, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Vanuatu).

Re: Sporcle
That's biased. I went back to see the percentages and I couldn't see them so I had to enter one name and then it allowed me to give up so I did, just to see the percentages. Sorry for distorting the data.Dinos Sfyris wrote:Also if you see the most missed it's essentially a popularity contest of all the series champions and one name so far hasn't been missed by anyone!

I did it once and got about 100. Is it not considered sad/cheating to do it again and again?Matthew Green wrote:Anyone tried the countries of the world one?

Yeah OK. I can see why someone might want to do the countries one again and again because it's not like one of those ones where once you've seen the answers you'll automatically be able to get full marks.Hugh Binnie wrote:Cheating? Tried the nations of the world quiz (not using any hints from here)...was quite happy with my 179, I'd got Palau, Nauru, and Kiribati off my own back, and then, when the time ran out, realised I'd somehow missed Italy.
This despite the fact I'd got San Marino and the Vatican City...

Don't think I've seen that Latin form of HALLELUJAH before. Otherwise, they weren't obscure (to me) and I kicked myself at missing a handful of them. Good quiz.

Have you ever looked up the procedure for how something gets on the Sporcle app? I never ever use the website anymore really, and both your quizzes would be app-superfriendly.

I have the Sporcle app on my phone but there's a very limited amount of games and some of the older ones aren't updated that often.Matt Morrison wrote:Have you ever looked up the procedure for how something gets on the Sporcle app? Re: Sporcle
It's not really that limited. There must be a good 500? 1000? quizzes to begin with and I get 3-6 new ones through every day. I love it.

Maybe limited was the wrong word. I have 438 games on my phone (of the 41 sports games, about 35 are all American sports) - which is kind of disappointing considering the literally thousands on the site (obviously some aren't gonna work due to how they are played). I'm not complaining though, it's a great app. I have it on Android, do you have an iPhone? There must be more games on it, because I get maybe one new game each day.

I don't have one of these new-fangled smartphones, but surely if you can connect to the internet on them, you can just get whatever's there - i.e. all of them.Eoin Monaghan wrote:Maybe limited was the wrong word. No, because most internet games (or at least most of the ones involving any sort of animation) require a Flash plug-in to work; and Apple refuse to support Flash on either iPhone or iPad.Gavin Chipper wrote:I don't have one of these new-fangled smartphones, but surely if you can connect to the internet on them, you can just get whatever's there - i.e. all of them.

I can get onto the Sporcle website on my phone and have played games on it before, but it's not as good as the app because the screen seems to be smaller whereas the apps are formatted better on the app. Also, the app doesn't require Internet access so if you're in an area with slow Internet it won't work.

Re: Sporcle
Yeah that's the joy of it Eoin - not just quizzes formatted with a phone screen in mind but the fact I can load the Sporcle app whilst I'm waiting on the tube platform at Stepney Green (despite being underground the reception in both Stepney Green and Embankment is perfect, pretty useful for my journey between the two) and download the new quizzes for the tube journey every morning and not need reception to play.
And yeah, iPhone. Agreed the American sports ones are annoying, alwways going to be part and parcel though, but I can appreciate if you only get one a day and it's about American football or something then yeah that would suck!

Well, since my last quiz went down quite well, here's another one. Enjoy!
Incidentally Sporcle doesn't use Flash AFAIK, so apart from formatting issues it should work fine on a phone/tablet.
