Apterous Winter Closed Week 1

Post by Andrew Feist »

Information about format and the pairings themselves are at the website.

Post links to games and summaries etc. below.

Reminder: Speed Demon should have two speed-9 games per match; the main tournament should have two or three standard games each.

I meant to ask - why does this tournament occur almost exclusively in the Autumn?

Because (a) I wanted to avoid dealing with holiday scheduling as much as possible and (b) there's already an established tournament on the February calendar.

Oh and (c) December is winter no matter what they say.

Closed A:

Henry Meier 2 - 1 Lesley Hines

Lesley Hines 92 - Henry Meier 75
Henry Meier 87 - 68 Lesley Hines
Lesley Hines 84 - 94 Henry Meier

Three very close games which aptly went down to a final tie-breaker, which I managed to snatch about a quarter of a second ahead of Lesley. Excellent games Lesley, unlucky, really enjoyed them!

It is my pleasure and privilege to bear news of the outcome of the Contest b'twixt Mr. BENTLEY and Mr. LEE, conducted this Day under the Auspices of Mr. FEIST's splendid Speed Daemon Tourney:

Mr. BENTLEY 36 - 40 Mr. LEE
Mr. BENTLEY 35 - 37 Mr. LEE

Mr. LEE comported himself with most excellent Vigour, tho' a surfeit of Laudanum robbed Mr. BENTLEY of Quickness and Guile.

Gratulations are afford'd the Apterous Difference Engine of Mr. REAMS, tho' such Electronick Magick can only be the Endeavour of a Sorceror or Charlatan.

Scott Gillies 84 - 75 Matt Bayfield
Scott Gillies 89 - 87 Matt Bayfield

Posting this here saves me posting it in thread of scrag!

Not that I want to detract from a good performance by Scott, as he played well, but I made some absolute howlers - misclicks when completing numbers games, forgetting to click return in the numbers box after declaring (double d'oh), and absolutely appalling judgement on risky words!

I'm claiming it's a tactical loss to get paired with someone else rubbish in round 2. ;-)

Well played Scott.

I do similar in chat I think with Kirk, but he's never told me it's annoying, so I guess he likes me more than he likes Dinos. Which is understandable. :)

Charlie Reams 2 - 0 Phil Makepeace

107-79: Respectable performance from both players, with my lame surrendering of 10 points on the numbers counteracted by a slight edge on the letters.
93-70: An erratic game, with my disallowed four and a further 20 points given up on the numbers to Phil's disallowed UNTAILED*. We both missed INSULATED, which was disappointed, and I lazily ended round early without remembering to handy MANURES+E. In the end I did just enough and a quick conundrum gave me a flattering 23-point margin.

Three good games with Josh, which I managed to come out on top by virtue of coming from behind to snatch the second game on the conundrum.
FIRST GAME: Josh Overhill 101 - 89 Lee Simmonds
Won this game as a result of finding 2 nine's, 1 of which Lee didn't get, though I completely messed up on 2 not overly difficult numbers rounds

SECOND GAME: Josh Overhill 88 - 91 Lee Simmonds
After falling behind early on, i took a 7 point lead going into the conundrum, after we had both had GIRLIEST disallowed. But I am useless at conundrums, and Lee solved AMPLITUDE right at the death to take it into a decider

THIRD GAME: Josh Overhill 62 - 107 Lee Simmonds
I subsequently went to pieces in this game, failed to score in the first 3 rounds, then Lee got DESPOTIC in round 6, which i failed to see. Just to top the game off, I misclicked in the final numbers round, and then mis-typed the conundrum which I had solved. Not that it mattered a great deal, the win of the game and the match was deservedly Lee's.
