After the initial puzzle of working out the actual date of the recap :) (Tue 21 Oct), my reverse crystal ball reveals that the letters selection for Round 4 was SCLUIAPFO; contestant 1 offered FLIPS; contestant 2's offering was as noted by Zef. If you're interested, the Teasers were HALBINO (HOBNAIL) and SMUGEEL (LEGUMES).

How long have teasers been going on?

Since the advent of 45-minute programmes (Series 46; September 2001). Initially, they were given various names, such as "pause posers" and "granagrams"; I'm not sure exactly when the name "teatime teaser" finally became the norm, although I don't think it took too long. Most of what I've just said (and more) is available at http://www.countdownwiki.com/Teatime_Teaser, if you're interested. (Plug of 'rival' website over! :) )

I seem to recall that for a while they were known as "dictagrams", as in "Richard's anagrams". Of late, the name seems to have changed again; Jeff now consistently calls them just "teasers" (dropping the word "teatime").

Cheers for that Mike. It seems that page should possibly be updated to include the way that show sponsors consistently do their own anagram things now, in addition to the teasers themselves (as opposed to the mentioned Seven Seas anagrams which preceded the teasers).

Upon which subject it's worth mentioning that I don't think I've managed to unravel PENETRATING GEL once in about 50 attempts so far.

You're probably right. I even kept records of the Seven Seas teasers, but I must confess that I haven't bothered with the Ibuleve ones. Maybe I'm getting slightly less obsessive in my old age!

Sounds like one for Anagram Genius, which suggests the likes of "planet greeting" and "entire eggplant". Hours of fun, really...

From the solutions given, it looks as though the R5 selection was 75,1,3,3,2,8
