All discussion relevant to Countdown that is not too spoilerific. New members: come here first to introduce yourself. We don't bite, or at least rarely.
Those from the forum will be familiar with these by now, but just in case there are any newbies, there are 26 conundrums. One starting with each letter of the alphabet but in any order. Solve them as fast as you can and whoever gets the last one wins some pretend prize that I pull out of my arse. This weeks prize........ a bottle of Windolene! GO!
You're right I'll have to step up my game. tbh When it comes to X and Z nowadays I'm running on empty so I just find one in a dictionary and check it using Countmax. Didn't look at their definitions but I don't think they're chemistry terms. Not everything I do is chemistry-orientated you know. Now if you'll excuse me I have a lab report that needs finishing
Try these countdown conundrums alphabet for size. These are relatively easy ones overall and the prize is to be confirmed... Apologies if some of these conundrums have either been ; seen on tv, have been repeated in this forum or have two or more solutions - I am much too lazy to check all these things . NO cheaters or letters solvers please
Only had a quick gander so didn't get all of them.
A. (Was thinking ASSUASIVE here, is that it?)
B. BANDWAGON
C. CESSATION/CANOEISTS/CARTHORSE
D. DIAGNOSIS
E.
F. FROSTBITE
G. GROTESQUE
H. HUNCHBACK
I. IBUPROFEN
J. JOCKSTRAP
K. KIDNAPPER
L. LONGITUDE
M.
N. NIGHTLIFE
O. ORCHESTRA
P. PROTOTYPE
Q. QUINTUPLE
R.
S. SOMETIMES
T. THESAURUS
U. ULTIMATUM
V. VENGEANCE
W. WATERSHED
X. XENOPHILE
Y. YESTERDAY
Z. ZIRCONIUM
Thanks to David doing the hard work (thanks!) I can see E is ECTOMORPH and R is RUBESCENT.
Not a clue about M though. I can't think of anything that fits those letters. And I know I wouldn't have got nearly as many as David with just a quick gander.
Here's another conundrum alphabet for everyone. Some of these are slightly more difficult than the last alphabet I made. Apologies again if the conundrums have either; been seen on tv, repeated in this forum or have another solution. i didn't have time to check these things
I've not spent a long time looking at them but WHITEWASH, ZYGOMATIC, PLOUGHMAN, YOUNGSTER and SOLILOQUY jumped out at me. I don't know what the X one is, it's not in the OED whatever it is.
The X one must be XEROPHAGY (the eating of dry food only, a form of fasting practised in the early Christian church) but Ben's right, it ain't in the current book.
Woo! Now Jason's done one I can have a go, plus I've got someone to take over the biz when I retire! Yes a few from recent shows (including mine) and some from my alphabets! Here's my attempt anyway:
A
BRONCHIAL
COURGETTE
DIARRHOEA
EUPHEMISM
FREELANCE
GUFFAWING
H
I
J
K
LOOKALIKE
MEANWHILE
NIGGARDLY
ONSLAUGHT
PLOUGHMAN
QUOTIDIAN
RAZORBACK
SOLILOQUY
THIRTIETH
UMBILICAL
V
WHITEWASH
XEROPHAGY
YOUNGSTER
ZYGOMATIC
which leaves AHIJKV, which I matched up as
K-NITROLEEK
H-BENYMOOCH
V-BAVPILARS
A/I-RADIOMALL
J-CATAJOINT
A/I-HOPIGRADE Not sure but IDEOGRAPH?
Apologies guys about the "X" word but it is XEROPHAGY but I got my words from the Shorter Oxford Dictionary. Ideograph is correct. I hope the other ones you guys haven't got are in the proper dictionary!
The other three were JACTATION, KORNELITE and VIBRASLAP. My sincerest apologies for XEROPHAGY as it appears to not be in the "proper" ODE and im sorry if the other three are not in the latest version either - they probably aren't so let me know! Well done evryone who took part
Got these pretty quickly (well, the ones I've got that is), though I think this lot seems easier on average than the ones from yesterday. Or else I'm just having a lucky night, though I'm stuck on 2 of them. Answers which were already given I've put in brackets:
A - (ANTHOLOGY)
B - BEECHWOOD
C - CHECKMATE
D - DISEMBARK
E - (ENDOMORPH)
F - FACSIMILE
G - GALEFLOOD
H - (HOMOPHOBE)
I - IMPERFECT
J - (JUICINESS)
K - KEYHOLDER
L - LABYRINTH
M - MIDWIFERY
N - NOCTURNAL
O - OFFSPRING
P - PURGATORY
Q - QUITTANCE (?)
R - RHEUMATIC
S - SUBMERGED
T - TAXIMETER
U - UNINJURED
V -
W - WHOLEMEAL
X - (XERISPACE)
Y - (YTTERBIUM)
Z -
I doubt I'd have seen YTTERBIUM, and probably would have taken long enough to get XERISPACE, if I'd seen it.
As much as I know this'll sound like a cop-out after the fact, I meant to put the question mark beside GALEFLOOD rather than QUITTANCE. I was initially not certain about QUITTANCE, but soon figured it to be right, while at first I thought GALEFLOOD sounded good, but by the time I'd finished wasn't so sure. In the end I just decided to go with it.
I'm hoping G doesn't turn out be GOODFELLA, since I'd thought about that and rejected it right away.
Myself and Dinos have locked horns and are "expertly" but inadvertantly constructing together conundrum alphabets. Coming soon from myself will be a teatime teaser alphabet so watch this space. Have fun with the next set of 9 letter anagrams (hopefully they are all in the most recent dictionary!)
01 - CATECHISM
04 - LIQUORICE
05 - QUICKSTEP
13 - ZUCCHETTO (have added the 2nd 'C' in the spelling )
14 - HIERARCHY (have got the I and E the right way round )
16 - AMPHIBIAN
19 - WOODLOUSE
21 - EARTHWORM
23 - JAYWALKER
26 - OTHERWISE

I spotted a few others in addition to those but I have never heard of ZUCCHETO, nice one Joseph.
B - BARRACUDA
D - DIAPHRAGM
F - FALSEHOOD
G - GINORMOUS
I - IMMEDIACY
O- OTHERWISE (WHORESITE is exactly the same way as CT scrambled this word)
P- PROPRIETY
T- TURQUOISE
Y- YELLOWISH

After racking my brain away at the remaining four I used a solver and I don't think TUGATIGER and HARRYPOGA are valid. Is the latter GYROPHARA? However HURTSLOPE and SHOUTTRIP are 2 excellent conundrums. Keep em coming
Thanks dinos. I have been criticised recently for some of my conundrum words (I'm glad you appreciate them because it takes me over an hour a time to finish an alphabet!) Your suggestion for HARRYPOGA is wrong unfortunately Keep trying
