With all this talk of XBOX 360s, Playstation 3s and Wiis, I can't be the only one to have noticed a glaring omission from the roster of state-of-the-art games machines vying for our attention - namely, the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-1!! Its enormous 9KB of memory and astounding clock speed of 200KHz make the Konrad Zuse Z3 look like a crock of shit!
Look at this amazing list of KILLER APPLICATIONS:
Octal Print Subroutine
ER X-REF; FR 15AU
Fortran Compiler
Solitaire
ASCII II Tape Lister
New Mode Sequence Break Log
Space War 4.0 TS
Real Time Clock
TECO Text Editor & Corrector
Space War 4.0 TS (without starfield)
AND MANY MORE!!!
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are crapping themselves over this - they know that they just can't compete with the visceral thrill-ride provided by Octal Print Subroutine (and, to a slightly lesser extent, Binary Print Subroutine)! Believe me, the kids'll be going MAD for a Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-1 once they've seen ER X-REF; FR 15AU do its stuff!
Yes.

Re: Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-1
Mock if you will; but without the PDP-1 we wouldn't have had the PDP-7, and without the PDP-7 we might never have had UNIX. And without UNIX we might never have had the World Wide Web.jimbentley wrote:With all this talk of XBOX 360s, Playstation 3s and Wiis, I can't be the only one to have noticed a glaring omission from the roster of state-of-the-art games machines vying for our attention - namely, the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-1!! And without the World Wide Web we wouldn't have C4C or Apterous.
Actually, yeah, the PDP-1 sucked.
