Congratulations Rachel! The bigger question is who will temporarily replace her during her maternity leave? (Assuming filming is as per normal until early to mid-December)

Who is going to take over for maternity leave ?
Might not be necessary. Countdown is recorded unusually far in advance of broadcast at the moment - usually it's a few weeks, currently it's a few months (perhaps for this very reason?). They've got so many episodes in the bank they could have a huge break in the recording schedule if they wanted to.

Legally she can take a year off for maternity leave

Or calling the producer a dick , tantamount to the same thing
Are you sure that's true?
I had heard that Carol's beef was with someone other than the crew or production team. (But I don't remember the story fully, and it may not be accurate anyway.)

I have no evidence to back it up
Someone else will know more, but I was under the impression that Carol and Damian didn't have a falling out, and are on good terms.
I understand that initially she was asked to take a 90% pay cut to continue and refused.
Whether she slagged off Channel four after she left I don't know for sure but I believe she hasn't been invited back since
At a guess, I'd say that there will not be a Rachel replacement and that filming will be done to suit her needs. If it results in Countdown taking some time off for whenever the episodes are broadcasted, then I can see that happen...

They will have to be a replacement as she will want to take at least 6 months of work it’s only like when Susie was expecting and she took 6 months off

Has no one seen a report that Countdown is taking a break in the New Year. Can't remember where I saw it now but it was within the last two weeks.
I believe that was in reference to filming, not production. There are already episodes registered as being on come New Year. Not totally sure how they will go about it continuity wise, though.
As far as I can tell, series 82 will be mostly in the can by mid-November, and possibly done heat-wise completely if they get a third filming block in before she pops.
My first appearance coincided with Susie's first appearance after the birth of her daughter, who would have been about four months old at the time. She had brought the baby with her, and I think her sister was looking after her in the dressing room while filming went on. I mentioned this to her when I was on the 30BC, and she said she had found the whole thing very hard going, though you never would have known. From the impression one has of Rachel I can imagine she would be keen to maintain her 100% attendance record, but it won't be easy.
My understanding of the December-January break is that it refers to filming only, and there are details of series 82 episodes including guests already on the wiki.
They have recorded up to mid February so far, with 2 more recording blocks scheduled by mid November. They should be up to about the end of March by then. At the moment, I think the plan is to start recording again in February, so all being well there shouldn't be any break in broadcast.
As for continuity, isn't it perfectly normal for someone to appear on a show 8 months pregnant one day, then the next day return again as if nothing ever happened?
I hate to throw a pedantry spanner in the calculation works, but 40 weeks is counted from the first day of the last period with conception typically occurring around 14 days after. So you're gonna have to go to 13 March for "the deed". Not sure vegans celebrate the 14th March in the traditional way
In order to not clutter things up in the "Countdown news" thread, I'll post here.... Congrats to Rachel and Pasha on the news that they'll be becoming parents for the 2nd time
As they're only filming about 6-8 weeks in advance at the moment (series 83 finals being filmed in early May), and Rachel had around 3-4 months off filming last time (November 2019 to February 2020) there will be quite a bit of catching up to do to get ahead far enough in filming that the show can go on seamlessly around her maternity leave like last time.
But I presume that will be by far the preferred option than trying to find an alternative presenter to cover for a short period - whilst it's easy enough to find a decent substitute main show host (Colin is testament to that) it will be far more difficult to find a short-term replacement for Rachel - it would be a real detriment to the show if she is temporarily replaced with someone who can't really do the numbers game like she can (and I don't think Carol will be coming back!).

If only there was a website where you could easily identify countdown enthusiasts with an exceptional talent for numbers who might be able to act as a temporary stand-in!
A couple of days ago my wife mentioned that it looked like she was developing a bump but I said it was probably an optical illusion of her black and white dress, but yesterday in the "carpet" dress she certainly looked like there was one developing - even to my eyes!
I thought I was good at Countdown until I joined this forum

On the off-chance that such a thing would ever happen, I would like to hereby formally invoke bagsy.
