Countdown recap for Monday 20 October 2014.


First of all it appears as though last Monday’s recap caused some controversy. This was not my intention, but if any offence was caused (especially to Dan himself) then I apologise unreservedly.



C1: Champion Dan McColm (7 wins 825 points) Dan has had seven wins and is on the verge of octochampdom.

C2: Challenger Stephen Wieldon. Stephen Wheldon, an investment banker from staffordshire who once completed in a tall ships race from Poland to Finland.

Six points to Dan as Stephen tries a risky seven that doesn’t come off.

Nice seven from Stephen but Dan maxes the round to go 15 ahead.

Score: 24–10 (max 25)


Easy numbers game ensures the points gap stays the same.

Again, Dan beats his challenger by one, enabling him to increase his lead.

Loads of sevens here and both spot one to enable Stephen to increase his total score


Round 6: 6, 7, 9, 4, 100, 75. Target: 683.

Dan: 683. (((100-(9-6)*7)+4 (10)
Stephen: 683. ((6*100)+75)+((9-7)*4) (10)
Score: 48–27 (max 49)

Different methods but both get the target.

PANNIER for both and Dan maintains his 21 point lead

Dan: ENCAGED (7)
Stephen: UNCAGED (7)
Score: 62–41 (max 63)


UNCAGED for Stephen and ENCAGED for Dan, these were the only two maxes available.


Round 9: 6, 7, 8, 3, 4, 25. Target: 505.

Dan: 505. (((25*7)-8)*3)+4 (10)
Stephen: 506.
Score: 72–41 (max 73)


There were more straightforward methods that Dan’s but his solution is a nice one and he now has a 31 point lead.

Stephen does not spell his word correctly and zero points in the round, enabling Dan to increase his lead further.

Score: 85–41 (max 88)


Stephen seems hopeful about emulater but its –or not –er and he falls further behind.

Dan beats Stephen by one point again and is now the series third octochamp.

Shorter words this time, but again Dan has one more than Stephen.



Round 14: 7, 4, 10, 1, 25, 75. Target: 624.

Dan: 624. (25+75+4)*(7-1) (10)
Stephen: 624. (25+75+4)*(7-1) (10)
Score: 107–51 (max 111)

Ten more points for each as we reach the conundrum.


Round 15: B O B H O P T O M

Dan buzzes on 1 second to say PHOTOBOMB which is correct.
Final Score: 117–51 (max 121)


And with that Dan is an octochamp and the number one seed for the finals, congratulations to him.

He s favourite for the series but there are other contenders already in the finals who definitely pose a threat, be here in December to see if Dan can become the series champion.
