Re: COGST Knockout Stage (contradiction): O'Neill vs Fell
Ah, a fine game, SOURSOP and the first numbers solution were particularly nice.
Does this mean I have to play Julian now, or have I misunderstood the draw completely?

I think so, you vs. Julian would be no. 1 vs no. 2 seed.Paul Howe wrote:have I misunderstood the draw completely?

Re: COGST Knockout Stage (contradiction): O'Neill vs Fell
No it's unlike the Plate it's the winner of 1 vs. 8 that plays the winner of 4 vs. 5, as per the televised show.
If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?
Re: COGST Knockout Stage (contradiction): O'Neill vs Fell
Yep, the format of the plate is what confused me, thanks for clarifying.Martin Gardner wrote:No it's unlike the Plate it's the winner of 1 vs. 8 that plays the winner of 4 vs. 5, as per the televised show.

Re: COGST Knockout Stage (contradiction): O'Neill vs Fell
Ah right so I play the winner of Bevins vs. O'Donnell in the semis, do I? Jeez... oh well
Guess who's going to be doing a LOT of practice on numbers before COLin It's annoying... after playing this game, I then watched Wednesday's and Thursday's episodes on TV back-to-back and got every numbers game spot on, including two Carol-beaters... but it's getting them when you're actually playing that counts, and I've been having a bit of a mare on the numbers in COGST... every one that hasn't been dead easy, I've missed
So again I luckily scrape through on a crucial conundrum, I'd rather be winning more impressively but what can you do - Jono is a great player and I always knew it would be difficult. Well played mate
Paul, I thought my performance here was v reminiscent of yours in your epic series SF vs. Conor - getting the maximum on every letters round and totally ballsing up on two difficult numbers rounds either side of a dead easy middle one... although I didn't have the excuse of studio pressure, facing Conor etc.
(Edited because I inadvertently posted a (very minor) spoiler - sorry if anyone saw it during the short time it was up there)

Very sporting of you, Charlie, to host a MSN game after all your splendid work creating apterous.Charlie Reams wrote:I put myself as the lexicographer and the guest, because that's how frickin' important I am.Martin Gardner wrote:Oh God not two of them!Charlie Reams wrote: DC: Charlie Reams and Charlie Reams.
I didn't spectate, but it was nail-biting reading the recap. Magnificent game, Jon and Julian, including many words I hadn't even heard of.
Congratulations to Julian, and commiserations to Jon - a really close game.
I was annoyed that I didn't get CAPELINS when I read the game through. I got CAPLINES, which is exactly the mistake I made in Junaid's game of 23rd Sept. aaarrggghhh!
Perhaps I'll remember it now.

Re: COGST Knockout Stage (contradiction): O'Neill vs Fell
Ha, very diplomatically put. The sad thing is that neither of those numbers were that difficult and I think both me and Conor would've solved them exactly on a typical day just watching at home, but as you say the pressure of the occasion gets to you.Julian Fell wrote:

Re: COGST Knockout Stage (contradiction): O'Neill vs Fell
I read and played along with the recap of that game in the comfort of home (well, my room at university) with no pressure on me, and I totally messed up the first and third numbers as well To be fair Paul I think they were fairly tricky!Paul Howe wrote:The sad thing is that neither of those numbers were that difficult and I think both me and Conor would've solved them exactly on a typical day just watching at home
Edit to say: and Carol didn't get them either, did she? (IIRC)
