Today's match features a recent series semi-finalist against one of the greatest players in the history of the show.

I was pretty sure DRAGOUTS was rubbish, but hadn't spotted a 7, so had to go for it.

No, and I paused the TV for a good 3 or 4 minutes trying to get it after he buzzed. I don't recall ever seeing/hearing the word though, so that's probably why

Nor me. I "buzzed" on 3 seconds with HYPOMATIC. Very good solve. And what a game. Great standard of play from both Martin and Chris!

I got it after about 5 seconds. Made up for only seeing BOARD in yesterday's conundrum, and not rearranging the others into FRET.

Is everyone in the OK board with PLUMAGES, cos we actually don't give it as good, nor does the solver...........

But a very good win for Chris, and super unlucky for Martin to lose like that.

I'm uncomfortable with it. Susie's rationale was that "different birds have different plumage", which is probably what you'd call mixed signals... It'd be the best thing ever if OUP had a massive review of their count and mass noun labelling so she could just say "Yep, mass noun, so you can't pluralise it" rather than being put on the spot so often.

Really good and entertaining game though, hugely impressed with Chris for staying calm and maintaining the deficit at 7 for several rounds before he finally got an opportunity to strike back. Great play by Martin too, overall. Shame he couldn't just sneak that one extra point somewhere to join me and Mark in the Century Losers club, because the game and his play absolutely merited it.

PLUMAGES was accepted by Susie in episode that aired on 23/1/2013.

I always think it's a bit dubious adding words for that reason, especially as Susie's rulings aren't always consistent. Plus it was 7 years ago now and we've moved dictionaries - how long does a Susie ruling last for? Does it ever expire?

ODE3 gives it as the collective name for a bird's feathers, but does give it as mass noun. I would argue restaurant rule on that one (although whether you would ask for the feathers of several birds is another matter).

Maybe they have. If these guidelines are still in use, most of these words now have a count noun meaning specified.
