Wednesday 13th July 2011 (Series 65, Prelim 28)

Post by James Robinson »

Welcome to the midweek Robinson Recap. Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Wednesday 13 July 2011.

C1: Champion Mark Deeks (1 win, 94 points.) An Apterite from Braughing, Hertfordshire. He's a student and basketball journalist. He once scored a hat-trick of own goals for his football team, but they still won 4-3 :!:  His football team that he supports is Arsenal. He also went 11 minutes without blinking as a dare once. He also claims that he came onto the show as a dare too, but is reluctant to name the culprit of this dare........., yet.
C2: Challenger John Maguire. A civil servant from Holywood, County Down, but was originally from Lisburn. Holywood is also the hometown of the golfer, Rory McIlroy, but John has never seem around. (Probably not too surprising really. ) John's mum has a collection of teapots, so John has an added incentive to win today. :D
DC: Susie Dent and John Stapleton.
RR: Rachel Riley, who (according to Jeff) would boost viewing figures if her back was turned away. (Surely, putting her side on, so her features would stick out would be better. ;) )
OT: Other words or solutions.

P.S. Note to the producer: FIND SOME PEOPLE WHO AREN'T CALLED JON/JOHN/JONATHAN!!

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: R I W E L N O I V

C1: WILIER (6)
C2: WILIER (6)
DC: OILIER (6) VIRILE (6)
Me: IVORINE (7) OLIVINE (7) RILIEVO (7) 8-)
Score: 6–6 (max 7)

6's all round in the studio, but I clean up with all 3 7's. It's not boasting, just using the good old brain cells. :geek:

OLIVINE is any of a group of magnesium iron silicates, (Mg,Fe) 2 SiO 4 , occurring in olive-green to gray-green masses as an important constituent of basic igneous rocks.
RILIEVO is another word for relief.

Round 2: R T M E I R T O B

C1: ORBITER (7)
C2: BITTER (6)
Score: 13–6 (max 14)

A nice darren gives Mark the early lead.

Round 3: D T E O G A I T N

C1: GODETIA (7)
C2: DOTTING (7)
DC: ANTIDOTE (8)
Score: 20–13 (max 22)

Now it's DC's turn to go darrenic with their 8. :)

Round 4: C R F O E A C S P

C1: FORCEPS (7)
C2: FORCEPS (7)
DC: RECAPS (6)
Score: 27–20 (max 29)

And now both players go darrenic, as Susie gives the RECAPS a nice mention. :D

Round 5: 100, 5, 6, 7, 10, 2. Target: 787.

C1: 787. ((100 + 10) x 7) + (2 x 6) + 5 (10)
C2: 787. ((10 - 2) x 100) - 7 - 6 (10)
Score: 37–30 (max 39)

2 very different methods, but 10 points to both players. :)

John talks about more cock-ups made by people on the TV screen, such as the journalist who asked the family singing group, The Corrs, how they met.

Teatime teaser: RITASCAT -> CASTRATI

Round 6: M C L X I E O P S

C1: POLICES (7)
C2: POLICES (7)
DC: COMPILES (8) COMPLIES (8)
OT: POLEMICS (8)
Score: 44–37 (max 47)

7's and 8's available in round 6.

POLEMICS is the branch of theology dealing with the history or conduct of ecclesiastical disputation and controversy.

Round 7: H T E A P T U M W

C1: MUTATE (6)
C2: THUMP (5)
DC: TAPETUM (7)
Score: 50–37 (max 54)

Another good DC darren as Mark extends his lead further.

Round 8: S R R A O A Z L E

C1: RAZORS (6)
C2: RAZORS (6)
DC: AREOLA (6)
OT: AZAROLES (8)
Score: 56–43 (max 62)

A fantastic darrenic 8 is missed in the studio, and Susie misses adding the R to AREOLA for a good 7.

An AZAROLE is another name for the Neapolitan medlar (Crataegus azarolus), a shrub of southern Europe; also, its fruit.

Round 9: T I D N O I D E O

C1: EDITION (7)
C2: EDITION (7)
OT: INDITED (7)
Score: 63–50 (max 69)

Easy 7's for the contestants, and this game is still in the balance.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of "golden balls" and "pawn brokers".

Round 10: 25, 4, 5, 3, 2, 10. Target: 847.

C1: 847. (((3 x 10) + 4) x 25) - (5 - 2) (10)
C2: 847. ((((5 - 2) x 10) + 4) x 25) - 3 (10)
Score: 73–60 (max 79)

Nice simple numbers if you know your 34 times table that is.

Teatime teaser: CHICTORE -> RICOCHET

Round 11: I N G A P T J U N

C1: JAUNTING (8)
C2: PANTING (7)
DC: PIGNUT (6)
Score: 81–60 (max 87)

Mark pulls out a very good darrenic 8 and now has a 21 point lead.

Round 12: R S H E A E D L Q

C1: HEADERS (7)
C2: LEADERS (7)
DC: SHEARED (7) HERALDS (7)
OT: ADHERES (7) DEALERS (7) HEALERS (7) LEASHED (7)
Score: 88–67 (max 94)

Pancake round.

Round 13: S R O A Y F I D S

C1: RADIOS (6)
C2: RADIOS (6)
DC: FORAYS (6)
OT: AROIDS (6) DROSSY (6) FIORDS (6) OSSIFY (6) SARODS (6)
Score: 94–73 (max 100)

And that 2nd consecutive pancake gives Mark the game.

To OSSIFY means to convert into or cause to harden like bone.
A SAROD is a lute of northern India, played with a bow.

Round 14: 9, 2, 5, 10, 9, 8. Target: 502.

C1: 502. ((9 - 8 + 9) x 10 x 5) + 2 (10)
C2: 501.
Score: 104–73 (max 110)

It might've been a tiny bit late to go for 6 small, but Mark's perfect solve makes it even worse for John now.

Round 15: O U C H L E E R S

C1 buzzes on 0.75 seconds to say LECHEROUS which is correct.
Final Score: 114–73 (max 120)

And a brilliant performance by Mark, which includes the first century since Andrew Halliburton's 100 against Barry Evans 3 weeks ago.

Only dropping 6 points is pretty impressive, especially in only your 2nd game too. Mark surely has the chance to go pretty far in this series, but can he live up to his promising start :?:

Join me tomorrow to see if he can make it a hat-trick of wins.

Till then, bye bye.

That was, of course, Donna Air(head).

I got FORCEPS at the 10 second mark or so. At the 20 second mark or so, Susie Dent said it really rather loudly.
