CoLei4 - Saturday 2 April 2011
As many of were probably not aware, because of behind-the-scenes activity, Jeff Clayton held his 4th (5th if you include the Summer Special) Countdown tournament in Leicester, this time at the Regency Hotel.
21 people attended, including a few debutants, such as Steve Turvey, who people might remember as Marcus Hares' 1st victim on his octochamp run.
I'm sure the others will fill in bits later, but here's the basics.
After the first 3 heats, the #1 seed was some guy called James Robinson, who scored 329 points, and was the only contestant to score 3 centuries. The only others who got 3 wins out of 3 in the first part were Josh Hurst, Matt Bayfield and Joseph Krol. The other 4 quarter-finalists were Jack Hurst, Mike Brown, Richard Priest and Stewart Gordon.
In the QF's, the odd seeds all won their games, so the semi-finalists were Robinson, Jack Hurst, Rich and Matt.
In the semis, Jack swept aside Matt, while James just scraped through a low-scoring nip-tuck battle with Rich. Rich would then beat Matt in the 3rd place play-off.
So, the final was between the still unbeaten James Robinson and Jack Hurst, whose only loss was right at the start to Matt.
James took an early lead with GEISHA, and in a closely-fought contest where the letters and numbers were shared out, with the early exception, but Jack clinical conundrum solving skills made him the winner by 106 points to 92.
It was another brilliant event, and I'm sure they'll be some recaps and pics available in due course.

Certain members of "the Sanctum" were not invited to the tournament. Some were, for some reason.
I am totally baffled too.

It's not elitism, it's a £20 Robinson-Clayton transaction so James can change his signature. Unlucky Unfortunately Countdown's not a team sport so you'll have to leave your geisha at home next time James, as it's just not gentlemanly to brag about success with the laydees. Personally I wouldn't describe Jack, Rich or Matt as odd but there you go.
Nice recap tho Looking forward to the pics.

Re: CoLei4 - Saturday 2 April 2011
Great day. Thanks to Jeff and Bee who did their usual brilliant job of organising and basically doing everything!
My personal highlights were two threesomes and peaking just after lunch.
It was also great to see and meet quite a few new people there. Roll on the next event. Co-Chest? CouCh? CoChe?
BTW I won't be posting any recaps of my games as I was, at best, mediocre!

Thanks to Jeff for hosting, I enjoyed the day, and it was nice to see regulars and newcomers at the tournament.

I knew that - because I went! I meant, like, who came 6th, who came 18th, who came 3rd etc. etc.Matt Morrison wrote:The Stoneycroft Hotel, Leicester.Soph K wrote:Does anyone know what place everyone came?
