What would you do with £500?
So I recently got paid about £500 for some teaching work, and I'm determined to spend it on something, rather than just let it disappear into my bank account. I have some ideas, ranging from the sensible (a new laptop and monitor setup for my living room) to the rather less sensible (a SHINY IPAD!!!), but thought it would be interesting to see what other people would do with a similar amount of money.
The question, then, is what would you do with £500 if you had to spend it on something. A new TV? A holiday? 500 lottery tickets? The choice is yours!

Half a Canon 7D, camping and walking gear to wander about England, a new PC/monitor. I shortly will be spending money on these things.

What I would do with £500...
I'm a fairly generous person, therefore this is what I think I would do if I was given £500 to do anything I wanted with: I'd probably give £110 to my grandparents, £120 to my parents, £50 to my brother, spend £100 on essentials, £30 on a few luxury things and £90 on things the don't need doing, but things that would make it a bit easier and better. £500 would do a good deal, even though, to some people, it doesn't sound much; frankly, my very first thought would have been this: '500 quid? It'd do hardly anything. A few shops, then done. Not much at all, £500.' Although, now I've thought about it more carefully, it would do a good job, £500. It isn't bad money.

The West Wing complete box set, the complete Thunderbirds collection, 10 kilos of chocolate, every bond film ever made, 36 cans of your favourite alcoholic beverage, a 12oz fillet steak, next year's subscription to apterous, a Countdown teapot, the complete works of William Shakespeare and a lottery ticket. And you'd still have 17p change.

It's not the best answer so far!! I would SO NOT spend it all!! I'd spend a bit of it and save about half or two thirds of it definitely!Ryan Taylor wrote:I like the dedication in this post. Most 11 year olds I know (admittedly not a whole lot) would have no idea how much £500 is worth, although not all of them would be so keen to advertise the fact on the Internet.Gavin Chipper wrote:Really? Re: What would you do with £500?
Hmm, quite possibly Settlers of Catan and expansions, although I'd look into getting other stuff, I'm sure there are new games out there that I've not come across which I'd love.James Hall wrote:Aaah but which ones? Also, possibly one of those teeny laptops (can't remember what you call them now) just so I could continue working on the various spreadsheets that suck up my free time at the moment when on the bus.
As far as I can remember, the only other occasions where I've had £500 spare were spent on:
a) A holiday in 1994
b) A stereo and my first stack of CDs in 1995 (and socialising)
c) A flat in 2007
I look forward to the next time such an occurrence, erm, occurs.

I just remembered I won 500 quid on the lotto a few years ago and I spent in on a big bag of weed. Nowadays I'd probably spend it on a new guitar.

It's probably because I watch a lot of Deal or No Deal and most of them go away with thousands and thousands of pounds. Not very many go away with £500, do they?
The minimum I would class as a lot of money (just to make things easier) is probably £300. But if I was wanting things that not only make life easier, but also a lot of luxury items and to improve on things that already are okay but would be a lot better if it was bigger, more modern, etc then I would class the following amount as a lot of money: £900.

Re: What would you do with £500?
To be honest I'd save it up as I love saving so that in the future if I wanted a holiday to somewhere I'd take one. It depends what you were doing at the current time. I've just booked flights to New York for £500 as my mate is getting married over there so it would have gone on that. Had it not then I'd have saved it or paid £284 for a 7 day all line rail rover and banked the rest - maybe bought a camcorder/digital camera so I could take pictures on my travels (like with me under each of the train stations names on so you can see one day I'm in Penzance and the next in Inverness).
