Ned Pendleton has 3 wins from 3 and is looking steady enough (especially when it comes to the numbers games). He has a very competitive streak, summed up by the fact that his parents wouldn't play Monopoly with an 8 year old Ned. Talking about Monopoly, the team on Eggheads last night lost out to the Eggheads on a sudden death question about the four train stations on a Monopoly board.

Greg Bowler has been flown in, literally, to thwart Ned's attempts at winning a fourth game. He is from Ireland and works for an airline company. He likes snooker, pool and playing poker as well as the spectacular city of Petra and the less spectacular but equally awesome New York.

Today I am a bit bored so I'm going to be experimental and try and comment on each round using only the letters that appeared in that round.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: T O N U E S F T I

C1: FOIST (5)
C2: nutties
DC: SOFTEN (6) OUTFITS (7)
OT: TENUTOS (7) TIENTOS (7) TONIEST (7)
Score: 5–0 (max 7)

Nutties not in. FOIST is. TENUTOS, TIENTOS, TONIEST is too.

Round 2: N A P S E I G W A

C1: paganise
C2: SPEWING (7)
OT: to be filled in at some point
Score: 5–7 (max 14)

Gawp! PAGANISE? Na. SPEWING wins again.

Round 3: B E R I O S L D E

C1: BOILERS (7)
C2: SOLDIER (7)
DC: reboiled BOILED (6)
OT: ERODIBLE (8) OBELISED (8)
Score: 12–14 (max 22)

I idolise SOLDIER. BOILERS is solid, so is ERODIBLE.

Round 4: S D A F I C A E I

C1: FACED (5)
C2: FACES (5)
DC: AIDES (5) FACADES (7)
OT: ACEDIAS (7) FASCIAE (7)
Score: 17–19 (max 29)

I did a faeces. 'e did FACES. This isn't working.

Round 5: 100, 25, 75, 50, 9, 10. Target: 388.

C1: 388. (100+75+10+9)*(50/25) (10)
C2: 388. 10*50-100-9-75/25 (10)
Score: 27–29 (max 39)

The gap is 2 points after a tense numbers game. Both chaps make a tricky numbers look easy.

DC Guest Time: Andrew Castle talks about swimming, swimming and more swimming. Quite Interestingly though, Rachel and Andrew had the same swimming instructor.

Teatime teaser: SWEETBOD -> BESTOWED

Round 6: S W G A U I R E T

C1: WARIEST (7)
C2: WARIEST (7)
DC: GUITARS (7) EARWIGS (7)
OT: AGISTER (7) GAITERS (7) STAGIER (7) TRIAGES (7) GUSTIER (7) GUTSIER (7) WAITERS (7)
Score: 34–36 (max 46)

Flat as a bottle of Pepsi left open for 10 years.

Round 7: M O D E A L V L G

C1: GLOVED (6)
C2: GLEAM (5)
DC: LOVAGE (6)
OT: GALLED (6) GAOLED (6) MAGLEV (6)
Score: 40–36 (max 52)

Well done Ned. Ned takes the lead for the first time since round 1.

Round 8: N E D U R E M T O

C1: REMOUNTED (18)
C2: MENTORED (8)
Score: 58–36 (max 70)

Boom! Greg's 8 is not good enough as Ned powers ahead with a 9. Good spot lad.

Round 9: X E C A E T N D U

C1: UNTAXED (7)
C2: ENACTED (7)
DC: EDUCATE (7)
OT: CUNEATE (7) EXACTED (7) EXUDATE (7)
Score: 65–43 (max 77)

A last second spot from Ned means that he maintains his lead of 22 points.

Susie's Slot: Susie talks about the origin of the proverb "If the cap fits, wear it".

Round 10: 3, 6, 5, 5, 7, 7. Target: 925.

C1: -
C2: -
OT: 925. ((7*5-3)*6-7)*5 (10)
Score: 65–43 (max 87)

A numbers game that looked ridiculous turned out to not be too ridiculous yet Rachel could only get 3 away.

Teatime teaser: COSYPACT -> COPYCATS

Round 11: T A M E A T S Y O

C1: STOMATA (7)
C2: STEAMY (6)
DC: TASTY (5) MEATY (5) TOASTY (6)
OT: STOMATE (7)
Score: 72–43 (max 94)

Lovely Ned. Best spot of the match I would probably say and I think Greg is almost dead and buried.

Round 12: R A N I P R O U N

C1: RAIN (4)
C2: unpair
DC: UPROAR (6) PANINO (6)
OT: PUNANI (6)
Score: 76–43 (max 100)

Both gents misso ut on PUNANI but Ned gets wet with RAIN for four.

Round 13: L E M O I V S J P

C1: MOVIES (6)
C2: IMPOSE (6)
DC: PLOSIVE (7)
Score: 82–49 (max 107)

DC shine for the first time really with a smexy 7. Without a 9 spotted in this round it means Greg can't win.

Round 14: 9, 1, 2, 3, 9, 2. Target: 597.

C1: -
C2: 597. ((9+2)*9*2+1)*3 (10)
Score: 82–59 (max 117)

Greg comes up with a lovely solution to this 6 small leaving the champion to watch and admire. Genuine quality shown by the already beaten Greg.

Round 15: T A R D Y L A D S

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say DASTARDLY which is correct.
Final Score: 92–59 (max 127)

But then Ned hits back with his own bit of flair solving this conundrum in just 1 second. It means Ned scores his highest points total so far and Greg must fly back to the Emerald Isle.

Rumour has it that an apterite is around the corner and I dare say Ned may have to up his game just a little bit more if he's willing to fight for his place in the series 64 finals. All will become clear later on in the week no doubt.

It's goodnight from me. And it's goodnight from him.

*** PAGANISE was disallowed by Susie. At present both apterous and the recap writer lists PAGANISE as valid and so the Max includes an 8 point max from round 2 rather than a 7. If this is a wrong disqualification by Susie then Ned should be awarded 8 points retrospectively and this is quite significant since he would have scored his first century today, had it been allowed.
Graeme Cole in spoilers thread wrote:I was surprised at it being disallowed, but I've checked my ODE3 and PAGANISE^ isn't in it. Nor is PAGANIZE^.
What Graeme said. Ye of little faith in Susie.

The maxes from Round 6 onwards are incorrect. The total max should add up to 127, not 129.

Yeah, I was basically laughing at myself for being a retard.
