It's hard to tell with his accent, though it looks as though there's a cut in the recording just after he says it, so maybe they checked his spelling at the time.

Even if he did say HAPERIN^, it wasn't an attempt to cheat. Risking words is part of the game and if there was any doubt, he should have been asked to clarify by Susie.

Absolutely Jack. If he mispronounced it and no-one checked that's not Abdi's fault!

I expect others can confirm this but I'm sure words have been disallowed because they have been spelt incorrectly, even though the correct spelling is available, for example having an e and i the wrong way round. I've always thought this the strangest rule, mainly because checking spelling isn't done for every word, so where do you draw the line? There have probably been several instances of a contestant mis-spelling a word like this but it has never been discovered. Anyway, maybe this isn't the thread for that.
Can't believe I had 'apology' ';) Probably wouldn't have done in the studio though. Wonder if Jeff would have? I'm sure he found more winners than Nick seems to.
