So, enjoy. ;) :) :D

Round 1: S Q O A I L R N E

C1: LANES (5)
C2: NAILER (6)
DC: NAILERS (7) AILERONS (8) ROSALINE (8)
Score: 0–6 (max 8)

A bit of a slow start, but Erin takes the lead with her NAILER, while DC go a couple of steps further via pluralising Erin's word.

Round 2: R M V A I O S N E

C1: MOVIES (6)
C2: MOVIES (6)
DC: MOVERS (6) VERSION (7) OVERMANS (8)
OT: AVERSION (8) MORAINES (8) ROMAINES (8) ROMANISE (8)
Score: 6–12 (max 16)

The contestants seem to still be in first gear with their 6's, while DC hit full throttle with another 8. 8-)

A MORAINE is a ridge, mound, or irregular mass of unstratified glacial drift, chiefly boulders, gravel, sand, and clay.
ROMAINE is a variety of lettuce, Lactuca sativa longifolia, having a cylindrical head of long, relatively loose leaves.

Round 3: 50, 25, 2, 10, 7, 6. Target: 184.

C1: 185. (7 x 25) + 10 (7)
C2: 186.
RR: 184. (25 x 7) + (50 / 10) + 6 (10)
Score: 13–12 (max 26)

A deceptive numbers game there, and it gives Steve the lead, while Rachel shows us one similar way to do it. :)

Teatime teaser: TINALOAN -> NATIONAL

Round 4: D N M A O I G R E

C1: DREAMING (8)
C2: DREAMING (8)
DC: ROAMING (7) GROANED (7) IGNORED (7)
OT: DRAGOMEN (8) IDEOGRAM (8) MARGINED (8) ORGANDIE (8)
Score: 21–20 (max 34)

Well, they're DREAMING of good things now. :D

A DRAGOMAN (plural DRAGOMEN) is a professional interpreter in the Near East.
An IDEOGRAM is a written symbol that represents an idea or object directly rather than a particular word or speech sound, as a Chinese character.
An ORGANDIE is a fine, thin cotton fabric usually having a durable crisp finish, white, dyed, or printed: used for blouses, dresses, curtains, trimmings, etc.

Round 5: T M D A U O K E T

C1: MUTATED (7)
C2: OUTDATE (7)
DC: TOUTED (6)
OT: TAKEOUT (7)
Score: 28–27 (max 41)

And they're on fire now, with 2 good 7's in this round, and with the gap still at one, a tight game is in store. :D

Round 6: 50, 75, 5, 9, 8, 7. Target: 175.

C1: 175. ((9 - 7) x 50) + 75 (10)
C2: 175. ((9 - 7) x 50) + 75 (10)
Score: 38–37 (max 51)

At least this low target was simpler to get to this time. 8-)

Penny talks about a walking trip with the Australian writer, Kathy Lette, in Switzerland.

Round 7: B W T I E A L I G

C1: BILGE (5)
C2: BLEAT (5)
DC: ALBEIT (6)
OT: ALBITE (6) BAILIE (6) BEWAIL (6) BLEWIT (6) GABLET (6) GELATI (6) LIGATE (6) TIBIAE (6) TIBIAL (6)
Score: 43–42 (max 57)

Quite a few 6's missed here, but the gap remains at a single point.

An ALBITE is the sodium end member of the plagioclase feldspar group, light-colored and found in alkalic igneous rocks.
In Scotland, a BAILIE is a municipal officer or magistrate, corresponding to an English alderman.
A BLEWIT is an edible pale-bluish mushroom, Tricholoma personatum.
A GABLET is a small GABLE, the portion of the front or side of a building enclosed by or masking the end of a pitched roof.

Round 8: D S M O E A S V O

C1: MASSED (6)
C2: MOSSED (6)
DC: VAMOOSED (8)
OT: VAMOOSES (8)
Score: 49–48 (max 65)

A super impressive 8 from DC there, which get top praise from me. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Round 9: 25, 75, 4, 5, 6, 2. Target: 218.

C1: 220. ((75 + 25) x 2) + (4 x 5) (7)
C2: 220. ((6 / 2) x 75) - 5 (7)
RR: 218. (25 + 75 + 4 + 5) x 2 (10)
Score: 56–55 (max 75)

Another deceptive small target, but Steve will be kicking himself for not following on from the earlier part of his method, but the gap is still at one point heading into the final part.

Teatime teaser: UNMOBILE -> NOBELIUM

Round 10: F R C E O A L J R

C1: FORCER (6)
C2: FORCE (5)
OT: CAJOLE (6) CARREL (6) COALER (6) CORRAL (6) LOAFER (6) ORACLE (6)
Score: 62–55 (max 81)

Ouch, Erin will definitely be regretting not going for FORCER (which she was clearly umming and ahhing), and that combined with NAILERS early on could prove to be very costly in the end.....

A CARREL is a small recess or enclosed area in a library stack, designed for individual study or reading.
A COALER is a railroad, ship, etc., used mainly to haul or supply coal.

Round 11: H P N I U S E L O

C1: ELUSION (7)
C2: SPINE (5)
DC: PINHOLES (8)
OT: SULPHONE (8)
Score: 69–55 (max 89)

A very nice 7 from Steve there, and it looks like he's pulling away at this late stage.....

A SULPHONE is any of a class of organic compounds containing the divalent group --SO 2, linked to two other organic groups.

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of the phrase "blazing a trail".

Round 12: T R F I E O S P R

C1: FROSTIER (8)
C2: SPORTIER (8)
OT: PORTFIRES (18)
Score: 77–63 (max 107)

A very good pair of 8's from this selections, but there was a killer 9 there :!: :!:

Round 13: T N G I O A S N G

C1: STAGING (7)
C2: AGONIST (7)
DC: TANGOING (8)
Score: 84–70 (max 115)

A very good 8, following on from yesterday's TANGOED in the special episode yesterday, but the game's not up yet.............

Round 14: 100, 2, 9, 5, 6, 1. Target: 825.

C1: 826. Mistake in working.
C2: 828. ((9 - 1) x 100) + (6 x 5) - 2 (7)
RR: 825. (((2 + 9) x 6) - 1 + 100) x 5 (10)
Score: 84–77 (max 125)

Well, going 1 large when you're behind at this stage, normally means that you don't think you have a chance, but Erin gets a surprise when Steve messes up, halving his lead and bringing us a surprise crucial conundrum :!: :!: 8-) 8-)

Round 15: A D O R E D N O T

C2 buzzes on 26.25 seconds to say TORNADO which is incorrect.
C1 does not buzz.
The answer was DEODORANT.
Final Score: 84–77 (max 135)

Well, after 26 seconds, Erin breaks the silence............... with a 7 letter word :!: :!:   :o :o     TORNADOED might've been a better guess, considering she didn't even use the E or the other D..........

So, Steve wins his second game, although since we haven't seen his first game, we don't quite know what to fully expect, but since he has previous experience, I think he'll want to try and do an Eileen Taylor and come back from the past to become an octochamp, which is certainly not unreasonable at this stage. :)

Join me for the last of my triple bill tomorrow.

So, till then, bye bye. ;) :) :D
