Cash Games?

Post by Dave Preece »

I pretty new to all this countdown forum stuff, so I have a question:

Has there ever been a cash/money game of Countdowm, I come from the world of Pool, and cash/challenge games are very common place, and seeing how competitive you guys all are, I'd be very surprised if there has never been a game played for money?

Pride is enough of a prize in itself.

I once played Ed McCullagh for £1000. He won, but I won.
Mike Brown: "Round 12: T N R S A E I G U

C1: SIGNATURE (18) ["9; not written down"]
C2: SEATING (7)
Score: 108–16 (max 113)

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

A few COLINs have had cash prizes but it wasn't a trend that lasted long.

But surely there have been grudge-matches where pride wasn't quite enough?

Well, there's a cash prize for the runner-up of each series, so grand finals are cash games if you play to lose.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

Isn't there more pride in a grudge match?

I doubt it would ever happen. Unlike pool, in Countdown you're a lot more certain how good you are (and your opponent is). The sort of discrepancies between perceived ability and actual ability that exist in pool don't really exist in Countdown.

However Dan McColm and I will take any comers for even money at pool. 8-)

Might take you up on that Jon, but I don't play doubles, singles only!

By the sounds of it you know a bit about pool?

They had a lucky run one night, only because the dream team that won 9 undefeated the night before gracefully retired.
