Game of the Year (GotY) 2012 - voting

Nominations for GotY 2012 have now closed. A big thanks to everyone who sent me their nominations, and once again to those who participated in the initial discussion to make this the most sensible and democratic GotY poll yet! A late flurry of nominations shook things up a bit! In total, there were 132 nominations comprising 61 different games. There were 13 games with ≥n nominations and a further 5 with (n-1) nominations. As discussed previously, I was aiming for a natural cut-off for the final poll at around 15 games, so I've decided to go with 13 as it's the closest cut-off to that target of 15 (also, it happens to be the same number as last year). The 5 games that missed out by a single nomination will be given an honourable mention below.

Voting:
  • Each person should submit one of 12 options for each game when voting: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Abstain (0 is worst and 10 is best). You can submit the same vote for as many games as you like. The games will be ranked by the average score received from the 0-10 votes (abstentions excluded), with the highest average score declared as the winner. You should submit a vote for every game, and abstentions are only permitted (but not mandatory) for games you were involved in.

I'm very happy with this selection of games. A wide of variety of game types and all of them are absolutely awesome in their own way. Well done to all of the nominees!

Nice one for sorting this out Adam, will be a good contest again.



I feel the following were unlucky not to be on the list and are better performances than some of the games mentioned (only in my opinion):

Innis Standard 15 double max win against Rex
Adam 18 maxes Hypergoat with 5 pencils
Innis v Adam Goatdown double max
Adam first max game in Touchdown 15
Adam Goat Attack max, Metamax-1, 16 darrens
Adam Hypertouch CA 190
Innis Lightning goat 15 max, nailed all his metamaxes
Ed v Eoin Goat double max in the Aptolympic final
Michelle Goat LA max, 11 darrens, 2 off metamax

Special mentions also to Martin, Gevin, and Steve who maxed Bullet Hyper NA, which is just insane. I just thought including the same thing three times was a bit silly, otherwise they'd make my list hands down.

I'll mention the some of the ones I nominated but that didn't make the cut.

Apterous Prune 0 - 200 Innis Carson - Innis's max hyperlock conundrum attack - the only one there's been.
Jonathan Rawlinson 150 - 200 Adam Gillard - The 4-large 200. Not more skilful than a non-200 max, but I see it as a landmark game.
Apterous Prune 0 - 162 Chris Davies - Highest scoring max 15-rounder. I see that as a big deal.
Apterous Rex 100 - 110 Conor Travers - Conor's tiebreak conundrum victory against Rex.
Matthew Tassier 200 - 0 Apterous Prune - The bullet aegilops numbers max (honourably mentioned anyway)
Innis Carson 196 - 206 Adam Gillard - Double max Goat Attack (also mentioned by Andy)
Apterous Rex 105 - 115 Innis Carson - Double max against Rex (mentioned by Andy)
Apterous Prime 177 - 197 Martin Long - First 3 large max

I think I nominated all but one of those that did make it, so that's good going.

That top one in particular is awesome, Gevin. I missed that when I did my scouting. I hope people don't think "wow what a game.. oh, it was Innis, so it's expected", because it's absolute class and deserves to be in the list

I might have to extend this by a week as very few votes have come in so far and I don't want to rush Charlie into putting this on the apterous homepage while Mark, Innis and Zarte's Just Giving page is up there. Will see what transpires over the next couple of days.

Seemingly not. This has been terribly disappointing to be honest; fewer people have voted than nominated - voting is so much quicker and easier!

Congratulations to Conor Travers for scooping the top award and the runner-up position! Well done to James Hurrell on preventing a Conoropoly with a creditable third place. I can reveal the points out of 10 for all of the 13 nominees if people are interested.

No, there were 9 voters. Some games ended up with only 8 counting votes due to abstentions. The highest and lowest vote for each game makes interesting reading, I'll add that to the table.

I've added the highest and lowest scores to the full results, because I think it's very interesting. 1st and 9th place have the same highest and lowest vote and there's quite a high-low spread evident in the voting. The most agreed upon seem to be 3rd place and 8th place and the least agreed upon seem to be 1st (!), 7th and 9th place.

When I say "most" or "least" agreed upon, that's based only on the high-low spread, whereas standard deviation or something would probably be a better measure. The fact that Game L came first despite a vote of 2 shows that most of the voters rated it very highly.

I gave this one a 10, I just felt the level of consistency and concentration required to max 96 letters rounds in a row, even though it's Nice, is higher than getting 116 maxes in a mocktorun with what Conor said was pretty easy numbers, but that's just me and probably biased by the fact I'm decent at numbers and shit at letters.
