MAINTOP was there in RD1 but I missed INCAPABLE which meant that I was a point down to an 11 year old at the first interval.

For the first time, I managed to beat him on the conundrum. :)

Didn't get the niner, but more than caught up with the numbers rounds.

I'm the same - I was beaten with INCAPABLE and LOITERED/DOLERITE which annoyed me and I was the same, 31-32 down after round 5. Good job I'm not in the studio as I may have bottled it at this point but I managed to beat him 105-69 sitting at home.

Also, did anyone notice, the word ROUNDELS was mentioned in round 9 and during Susie's talk on origins of words, you can see the 8 letter word UNSOLDER on Carol's board. A continuity error there methinks.

Oh another beater in round 1 was TAMPION .

I too missed INCAPABLE and felt exactly that  but it makes me feel better to see that DoD and Kirk missed it too.I eventually beat Kai by 21 points.

I got 8 maximums today, matching him in weakness as much as strength, I too screwed up that last numbers game.

I'm wondering what nerdy records there might be in the offering for his age, finals seed position, youngest ever semi-finalist, highest octochamp score, ( youngest person ever to beat Charlie Reams, haha )

I shouldn't like to face him in a crucial conundrum for sure.

Yet again it came to a crucial conundrum and he beat me by about 0.5 of a second.

What a roller-coaster!

I also missed the 9 but managed to get the last numbers and the Conundrum by about half a second to get up on the line. Phew!

He continues to be extremely impressive under pressure.

Another here that missed the 9 :oops and I saw CAJOLES but didnt know how to spell it! I did get MAINTOP as a rd 1 beater, and UNMEANT as an equaller. Also in the ROUNDELS round can you have DELUSORY?

Thought the challenger was a nice guy. Was a shame to see him go.

I was a bit awestruck today as I am actually a fan of The Refuseniks, well I had 'Voyeur' downloaded at any rate.

Bit of a mixed bag here from Kai - some really superb spots (CAJOLES and INCAPABLE, as mentioned) but also some disappointing misses, especially on the numbers (by his high standards anyway) - although I admit he did beat me on round 5.

Did anyone get PIVOTMAN in round 1?? I'd never heard of it, and it's well hidden in the dictionary within the definition of PIVOT. Just shows, you may think (in moments of arrogance) that you know all the high-probability long words using common letters, but I keep learning new ones even now, BIRTHDATE, METACARPI, MEGADOSE all recently, and now PIVOTMAN

I was really pleased with MAINTOP but now I'm upset, despite the learning curve :(
