Yes, that's right - none of your "My" Child like Matthew Green's thread - we're sharing this one. PLUS IT IS DEFINITELY A GIRL.

Ideas please. Heather is quite drawn to names with X or Z in, but has relaxed those specifications. She does not want a too-short one, or a too-long one. Two syllables is absolutely ideal, but three could work.
She may well probably have an Indian-inspired middle name too.

So yeah - hit us. We need some help. Also Heather (for obvious reasons) doesn't want anything that is popular amongst the kids at school. Sorry that I can't provide a full list of no-nos, but things like Lashawn (sorry Ryan) aren't going to work out. Nothing too black sounding too.

I think there's a few things you might want to consider when naming a child. A lot of people these days seem to go for "individual" names, but they often end up being simply shit. (See celebrities). Also, if you are choosing a non-standard name, it should have an obvious spelling. Otherwise your child will go through life with people constantly misspelling her name, which would be annoying. Even standard names can have that problem - e.g. Phillip/Philip.

And although you might consider "normal" names to be boring, I think there's a lot to be said for them. Your name is your "label" in life, and it makes sense for it to be a neutral thing, so that people concentrate on you rather than your name and think you're weird or have weird parents. I think some "non-standard" names can probably work, but a lot are shit.

I have the fun of doing the music for all Exeter University graduations, and to pass the time I read the programmes for 1) the most bizarre PhD thesis titles, and 2) amusing names. I can't remember any of the former, but the standout for the latter so far was a female student whose last name was Warr. I wondered what she thought of having the middle name Atomic. Ha bloody ha. Parents who use their children as punch-lines. Any wonder she had studied psychology. They fuck you up, your mum and dad, as Larkin so poetically said.

Oh, it was just because "a bunch" = well over a thousand in this case and I thought it might have come across a bit spammy.

How about Innis. In Hispanic culture its a girls name, albeit with a slightly different spelling (Ines). Then there'll be the countdown link and the slightly unusual, but not unheard of name.

Well done too on making a girl, truly the better half of the population.

I have 4 sons and a daughter, but if I'd had a second daughter (after Claire) I had the name Laura in mind. That fits your 2 syllable preference, but might sound be a bit boring for Heather. You could run it past her.

Alexa sounds a little, but not too unusual. It has an X in it per Heather's preference, and although 3 syllables, isn't too long and is easy to spell.

You can mostly get away with it if it's a girl. If it's a boy, you really want to make the name as plain as possible, otherwise that kid will undergo hell at school. In my job I've dealt with some utterly hideous names but one habit I can't get over is giving kids double-barrelled first names. Especially if it's a boy. Who also has a double barrelled-surname. And two middle names. Hopefully by the time he grows up all the application forms he'll need to fill in will be online or there'll be a massive ink shortage in his family.

More on the freaky side, and reminds me of Austin Allegros. Just don't think it's a very good name. But it's not just that it's particularly freaky as such, it just looks like it's trying to be different for the sake of it, without any of the "advantages" of a more freaky name.
