This is in the paper today - so it looks like AA is going to be in the chair.

That will do for me!

I thought it was going to be Jeff Stelling?

Alexander Armstrong is not bad actually.

As long as 6 months down the line he doesn't complain that he can't do both with his other commitments...maybe they could do a guest host....might keep the booker busy

I think it's a pity that Giles Brandreth couldn't do it - he was talked of before Des Lynam was chosen. I know he's totally OTT, but at least he is amusing and quick-witted. Which I expect AA will be, bringing a new, younger look to the show. So long as he doesn't say anything to upset the old dears (like me).

I've just checked his Wikipedia entry and it's not listed...ahem...if he was the new host obvioulsy it would be there. Mmmnn. Giles still has a shot.

Certainly the end of an era with Carol going. Des sort of grew on me as a host, too.
Brilliant news about Alexander Armstrong, though, if Channel 4 confirms it. :)

Alex would be a good host I'm more curious as to who they are going to get to replace Carol, because noone can replace her.

There must be an official announcement very imminent, if they're going to be recording with the new hosts at the end of November... is Corby going to be the new Carol? :)

The Mirror now say AA has pulled out. Seems to be based on his embarrassment on his ribbing on 'HIGNFY' last week. Well if he is embarrassed to be host of a television institution, he doesn't deserve the job. Now,this may be paper talk, so who knows.

The Mirror story has been confirmed by Channel 4 Teletext. It seems Armstrong has indeed quit at the 11th hour.

Well, because Alexander Armstrong changed his mind about hosting Countdown at the last minute that means I will have to re-write my Series 60 version of We Love Countdown.

Watch for a new thread very soon.

I see the latest speculation centres around John Sergeant. Personally, I think he'd be quite a good choice. I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea (who is?), but I think he's quite witty and wouldn't 'take over' the show in the same way that some presenters would.

Damian is probably thinking up a comment as I write, along the lines of "you couldn't be further from the truth"!

John Suchet, perhaps? Although he's only just started doing Going For Gold (currently being dominated by ABSP chairman Terry Kirk all last week).

I agree that if Armstrong has quit because of the HIGNFY ribbings then he's almost certainly not right to be doing the job anyway and probably wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of years.

Is it not possible that the HIGNFY ribbing was because AA had told them he wasn't going to do Countdown after all? (References to unsigned contract by Merton). And remember that any host has to appeal not just to the fans who use this site, but to the other part of the demographic. The ladies of the various WIs I have done talks for all want a comfortable, charming and most essentially, polite host.
I still like the idea of Jonathon Ross tho... :o

Because he'll wake up one morning and realise he's on a show designed for the lobotomised and quit as soon as possible?

Goodness! It really is getting late in the day for this! And not only to find CV and DO's replacements, but also to find out if they work well together - they need to try them together to see for sure if either is right.

I personally would prefer it to be someone from within the Countdown family (well, aside from me!), either a DC regular or former well known player, but as DO has proven, you can come from outside and fit right in. :-)
