C1: Champion Dave Taylor from Sunderland wants to see more dialect words in the ODE, including his favourite, plodge, which apparently means "to paddle about in the sea with your trousers rolled up to your knees".

C2: Challenger Jill Kohn comes from Dorchester, who says her favourite place in the world is New Zealand, where her daughter lives. Jill spends 3 months every year there, taking time out to visit her son in Hong Kong on the way. She jokes that she's such a terrible mother she's driven her children to the far corners of the world to get away from her. Hmm, if that was their plan it doesn't seem to have worked, does it?

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: W U N D E T S I A

C1: unsited
C2: SAINTED (7)
DC: UNWAISTED (18)
Score: 0–7 (max 18)

Dave either can't see the ball or loses his place, he's not sure which. Either way, it's invalid, giving Jill an early lead. DC don't let the opportunity for a nine go to waste. UNWAISTED, you could say.

Round 2: R H O E B R A N S

C1: BARREN (6)
C2: BARRES (6)
DC: BRASHER (7) HOARSER (7)
OT: BARRENS (7) BORANES (7) HOARSEN (7) SENHORA (7)
Score: 6–13 (max 25)

A few sevens missed by both players here. A BARRE is a handrail fixed to a wall, as in a dance studio, used by ballet dancers as a support in certain exercises. A BORANE is a chemical compound of boron and hydrogen.

Round 3: K I C D O Y S E B

C1: SOCKED (6)
C2: SOCKED (6)
DC: BEDSOCK (7) SICKBED (7) BODICES (7) DISOBEY (7)
OT: DICKEYS (7)
Score: 12–19 (max 32)

Again a few sevens missed by both players, but not DC who spot almost all of them.
Round 4: D S I U E L G T R

C1: TRUDGES (7)
C2: GILDERS (7)
DC: GUILDERS (8)
OT: DILUTERS (8) SLUDGIER (8) STUDLIER (8)
Score: 19–26 (max 40)

When I saw Jill declare GILDERS without the "U" I thought she'd blown it, but the seven is still valid. Opportunity missed though, I think. GILDERS are artists specializing in gold leafing.

Round 5: 25, 4, 5, 6, 10, 3. Target: 494.

C1: 494. (5*4*25)-6 (10)
C2: -
Score: 29–26 (max 50)

And it immediately comes back to bite her as she loses her way on the numbers (and the lead).

DC Guest spot:John continues his theme of available world records. Anybody fancy taking on the challenge of typing out all the numbers from 1 to 1 million? Didn't think so.

Teatime teaser: TENDIETS -> DINETTES
Clue: "Change the colour of your curtains before eating here".

Round 6: R M O I T L A O G

C1: GROOM (5)
C2: MORTAL (6)
DC: GLOAT (5)
OT: AGOROT (6) GALIOT (6) GALOOT (6) GLIOMA (6) MALOTI (6) MITRAL (6) TAILOR (6)
Score: 29–32 (max 56)

Loads of sixes going abegging^ here, but it's Jill who makes the vital spot.
The MITRAL valve is in the heart. MALOTI is the plural of LOTI, the unit of currency of Lesotho. A GLIOMA is a tumour of the brain or spinal cord. A GALIOT is a small, two-masted galley. AGOROT or AGOROTH is the plural of AGORA, the unit of of Israeli currency (100 agorot = 1 shekel).

Round 7: L E T M A N U P D

C1: PLANTED (7)
C2: PLANTED (7)
DC: PLANTED (7) AMULET (6)
OT: MANTLED (7) PUTAMEN (7) UNTAMED (7)
Score: 36–39 (max 63)

Both players reap full points here for the first time. The PUTAMEN is a round structure located at the base of the forebrain, also a botanical term for the stone in a fruit.

Round 8: N P P E O I F S V

C1: OPINES (6)
C2: PIPES (5)
OT: PEPINOS (7)
Score: 42–39 (max 70)

A nice spot from Dave puts him ahead again. OPINE means to state as an opinion. An OPINE is a compound found in plant tumours. A PEPINO is a S. American fruit similar to eggplant.

Round 9: L E C D A I S F O

C1: FOCALISED (18)
C2: SLICED (6)
Score: 60–39 (max 88)

FOCALISE: to concentrate on a particular place or spot. Dave certainly concentrated on this particular spot, slicing Jills effort to ribbons.
Origin of Words continues the theme of generic trademarks. Today it's the games mahjong^ and ping-pong.

Round 10: 100, 10, 6, 8, 4, 1. Target: 644.

C1: 644. ((100+8)*6)-4 (10)
C2: 643.
Score: 70–39 (max 98)

Dave remains focused and hits the target to stretch his lead further.

Teatime teaser: DRAGTIME -> MIGRATED
Clue: "Got cold first, then bird flu." :) Clever.

Round 11: P E G R U O T C A

C1: PORTAGE (7)
C2: croupe
DC: CAPTURE (7) OUTRAGE (7)
OT: COURAGE (7) OUTPACE (7) OUTRACE (7) POTAGER (7)
Score: 77–39 (max 105)

Dave carries off the points again, while even Jills' sickly effort is invalid. He's now scored 41 points since Jill last scored.

Round 12: R S J E I A M T L

C1: MALTIER (7)
C2: JAILERS (7)
DC: MISTRAL (7)
OT: ARMLETS (7) MAESTRI (7) MAILERS (7) MILTERS (7) RAMJETS (7) REALISM (7) REALIST (7) RETAILS (7) SALTIER (7) SALTIRE (7)
Score: 84–46 (max 112)

Sevens galore means that technically Jill still has a chance to tie the game. The MISTRAL is a strong wind which affects the Rhone valley and Cote d'Azur. MAESTRI is an alternative plural of MAESTRO. MILTERS are male fish in breeding time. A RAMJET is a form of jet engine which uses the engine's forward motion to compress incoming air. A SALTIRE is a heraldic symbol in the form of a diagonal cross, such as the Scottish flag.

Round 13: W E H S O M A R T

C1: SHOWER (6)
C2: MOTHERS (7)
DC: SOMEWHAT (8)
Score: 84–53 (max 120)

Given her comments at the start, Jill rather aptly spots MOTHERS, although she's left it SOMEWHAT late to attempt a comeback. Dave doesn't let it rain on his parade, though, because he's got this game in the bag.

Round 14: 100, 5, 7, 3, 10, 9. Target: 528.

C1: 528. ((10-9+3)*7)+(100*5) (10)
C2: 527.
Score: 94–53 (max 130)

Once again Jill is one away while Dave takes the points.

Round 15: N E T T P R I C E

C2 buzzes on 11 seconds to say CENTREPIECE which is incorrect.

After another short hiatus the Conundral Corbometer is back.

C1 buzzes on 14 seconds to say INTERCEPT which is correct.

Final Score: 104–53 (max 140)

Another century and another lovely nine from Dave. John Inverdale close out the show with a word-related challenge for Susie. The question is: "Goran Ivanisevic is unique among Wimbledon winners. Why?" Rachel knows the answer but she's been ordered not to tell. Hopefully we'll find out tomorrow if Susie can come up with the answer.

Mike Brown: "Round 12: T N R S A E I G U

C1: SIGNATURE (18) ["9; not written down"]
C2: SEATING (7)
Score: 108–16 (max 113)

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."
