Apterous Autumn Tournament

...in need of a good name.

The tournament, which will start on 13th September and run for five weeks, will consist of three tiers- premier, championship and open.

The premier tier will be open only to the top 14 players on the pro ranks published on 12th September (might as well link them now). It will be a straight round robin of best-of-1 15 rounders, followed by king-of-the-hill (1st vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 4th etc.) rounds as necessary to make it up to a minimum of 12 rounds (obviously if 13 or all 14 play in the tournament, this won't be necessary). This will be followed by best-of-7 semi finals and a best-of-9 final.

The championship tier will be open to everyone placed between 15th and 100th inclusive on the 12th September pro ranks and will be a 12-round swiss-paired (people on a similar number of wins play each other) tournament followed by a best-of-7 final for the top two. Everyone will have three best-of-1 15 rounders to play each week.

The open tier will be open to everyone else (pro ranks of 101+ on 12th September) and will follow the same format as the championship tier.

Pairings will be determined using tsh and will be entered into the apterous tourney system- pending approval from Mr. R. tsh has the advantage of spitting out some really nice html stats and a wallchart of games played/unplayed which will come in really handy for the premier tier.

As always, sign up below. Entries will taken right up until the publication of the pro ranks on 12th September.

I suspect this discussion has been had before, but wouldn't it make more sense to split the entrants into three equally-sized divisions (by Pro Rank) after entries have closed? Also I would freeze the reference Ranks now, otherwise you get into a weird jam when the deadline looms and people can manipulate their position.

Possibly. I'd initially intended for the premier tier to be a straight round robin of just the top 14 regardless of their overall pro rank position and I may do that anyway (maybe with a smaller number in there), and dependant on entries I may shuffle the cutoffs around a bit if one group starts looking particularly anaemic.

I can't see anyone deliberately sandbagging (you have to admit it'd be pretty lame to do so), and I kinda like the idea of people competing to get into a higher tier.

Fair enough, just my 2 cents.

Though the wife is due to give birth on 6th September, hopefully she won't overrun, or I might have to pull out.

This is shaping up to be pretty awesome, I would play but I think the timezone thing might get annoying (and also I am quite terrible now).

To be fair 3 different opponents in one week would be a stretch for someone 8 hours behind. Depends on what lunchbreaks Google give him, I suppose. :)
