Post by James Robinson »

Thursday, Thursday, so good to me.........

Maybe the Mamas & Papas did a secret sequel song............

Oh well, before I lose you all, enjoy this Robinson Recap. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Thursday 23 June 2011.

C1: Champion Matt Croy (4 wins, 387 points.) An Apterite from Oldham, Greater Manchester. He works as a policeman, and says his home which overlooks the hills is his favourite place on Earth. He went to the X Factor Live tour and got into the VIP section seeing amongst others, One Direction, Mary Byrne and Katie Waissel.
C2: Challenger Kevan Nijjar. A mathematics student at Birmingham University, but comes from Reading, Berkshire. He plays football for his university, but had some bad memories recently, when his team, Reading F.C., lost in the play-off final. (Not the only one mate...... ) Even worse was that he had an exam the next day :!:
DC: Susie Dent and Tim Vine.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: S M I P I E H O J

C1: HOMIES (6)
C2: HOMIES (6)
DC: PIE (3) IMPOSE (6)
OT: IMPISH (6) MOPISH (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 6)

A nice 6 start for all today, except Tim who seems to want some PIE.

Round 2: K S E E O L S W T

C1: TOELESS (7)
C2: STOLE (5)
DC: SLOWEST (7)
Score: 13–6 (max 13)

An impressive 7 by Matt gives him the first lead today. Interesting that Susie says that her offering of SLOWEST isn't as good as TOELESS.
Surely, you'd rather be the SLOWEST then TOELESS any day :!:

Round 3: R T E M A A D O R

C1: MATADOR (7)
C2: MORTAR (6)
DC: labrador
OT: MORTARED (8)
Score: 20–6 (max 21)

No bull from Matt, as he charges further ahead. Slightly puzzling that MORTARED was missed, when Kevan declared MORTAR.

Round 4: T S L A I E N D A

C1: DETAILS (7)
C2: STAINED (7)
DC: LANDTIES (8)
OT: DEINSTAL (8)
Score: 27–13 (max 29)

Ooops, there's me (and probably a few other people) thinking that SALINATED was fine for 9. Oh well, DC get one of the 2 8's, as the contestants with one of the many 7's available.

Round 5: 100, 8, 4, 4, 7, 5. Target: 575.

C1: 572.
C2: 575. (8 + 7 + 100) x 5 (10)
Score: 27–23 (max 39)

Clearly Kevan has been practising his 115 times table for this. A good ten points for him. He's definitely back in this game. 8-)

Tim talks about his dad's idea for making Countdown better, by introducing the Countdown Conumberdrum.

Teatime teaser: ERASETIE -> EATERIES

Round 6: B Y V R I E U C R

C1: CURVIER (7)
C2: CURVIER (7)
Score: 34–30 (max 46)

Hmmmmmmm, Rachel........... ;) :) :D Sorry, my mind was elsewhere there, or was it :?: CURVIER seems pretty appropriate to me.

Round 7: T W O E Q F A N A

C1: ATONE (5)
C2: fanta
DC: OFTEN (5)
OT: FATWA (5) OATEN (5) QANAT (5)
Score: 39–30 (max 51)

Just 5 5's here, but Kevan might've been left feeling a bit orange here......

A QANAT is a gently sloping underground tunnel for irrigation purposes, especially in ancient Persia.

Round 8: P B C E O E N L A

C1: BEACON (6)
C2: coplane
DC: OPENABLE (8)
OT: BEANPOLE (8)
Score: 45–30 (max 59)

The lead extends to 15, as Kevan's gamble doesn't work, while DC impress with a good 8. :)

Round 9: G P E F O I T M D

C1: MOPE (4)
C2: MOPED (5)
DC: MIDGET (6) FIDGET (6) FOETID (6)
OT: GIFTED (6) GIMPED (6)
Score: 45–35 (max 65)

Ouchy, Matt will probably MOPE on his MOPED later about that miss.....

Susie's Origins Of Words talks about the origins of the months of the year in the calendar.

Round 10: 50, 4, 10, 8, 9, 7. Target: 676.

C1: 677.
C2: 676. ((10 + 4) x 50) - (8 + 9 + 7) (10)
Score: 45–45 (max 75)

Another perfect solve by Kevan means that the scores are amazingly level. :o

Teatime teaser: HEYSLICE -> CHEESILY

Round 11: S L A Z N E U C E

C1: CLEANSE (7)
C2: CLEANS (6)
DC: SCALENE (7) NUCLEASE (8)
Score: 52–45 (max 83)

Oh dear, now it's Kevan's turn to forget to stick a letter to his word to extend it, but DC yet again show brilliance with the darrenic 8.

Round 12: N G S O A T O D U

C1: ASTOUND (7)
C2: untags
DC: OUTSANG (7)
OT: GOONDAS (7) NOUGATS (7)
Score: 59–45 (max 90)

Matt even looked ASTOUNDed that ASTOUND was there. All of a sudden, the game is back in his favour now.

A GOONDA is a rogue or hoodlum.

Round 13: R M I S A E T U I

C1: MISTIER (7)
C2: MISTER (6)
DC: TIRAMISU (8)
OT: MURIATES (8) SERIATIM (8)
Score: 66–45 (max 98)

A fatal ouch for Kevan, as his 2nd "forgetting to insert letter into word" moment has given the game to Matt, while DC enjoy a TIRAMISU to go with Tim's PIE from earlier.

A MURIATE is any chloride, especially potassium chloride, KCl, used as a fertilizer.
SERIATIM is an adjective meaning "one after the other" or "in a series".

Round 14: 25, 6, 2, 7, 10, 2. Target: 914.

C1: 907. ((10 - 2 - 2) x 6 x 25) + 7 (5)
C2: -
RR: 914. (((10 + 6 + 2) x 25) + 7) x 2 (10)
Score: 71–45 (max 108)

Another stinker numbers game crops up. This time Kevan couldn't even declare anything, as Matt manages to get within 10, as Rachel needs extra time after being 2 away originally.

Round 15: S O L E C Y N I C

No one buzzes. The answer was CONCISELY.
Final Score: 71–45 (max 118)

Not even a single member of the audience got the conundrum, which I found very surprising (or is it me :?: ).

Oh well, no worries, but a slightly sub-standard performance by Matt has just got him over the line today, mainly thanks to Kevan's shaky start and crumbling finish, but he has got to do better tomorrow if he's to make it 6 out of 6.

With Mike off this week, Rhys will take over recapping duties tomorrow, and I'll be back next week, when there'll be 2 new players for me to recap, as Matt will have finished his run (whether he wins 3, 2, 1 or maybe even no more games.)

So, till then, bye bye.

I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.
