Tuesday 24th May 2011 (Series 64, Prelim 92)

Post by James Robinson »

Welcome one and all in what has suddenly become a sad and depressing day for fans and lovers of the show alike, with the shock news that Jeff Stelling has announced that he will resign as host at the end of the next series: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar ... ds-newsxml

Well, as it looks like we only have a hundred or so episodes left of the Stellmeister, let's praise them as much as possible. Enjoy. ;) :) :D

Countdown recap for Tuesday 24 May 2011.

C1: Champion Liam Herringshaw (2 wins, 164 points.) From York, but originally from Leicester. He's a palaeontologist whose studies have taken him across the world, although the most exciting find he has uncovered was some dinosaur footprints in that most exotic of locations......., Scarborough.
C2: Challenger Gary Kenwright. From Macclesfield, Cheshire. He loves snooker, tennis and word games. When he was a boy, his dream was to become an impressionist and that leads to Jeff asking for his best impression, which turns out to be an impression of Leonard Rossiter. :)
DC: Susie Dent and Alistair McGowan.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Round 1: D L O X U A N T O

C1: UNTOLD (6)
C2: UNLOAD (6)
OT: DALTON (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 6)

A DALTON Is an atomic mass unit.

Round 2: N E S I G E S A N

C1: ENGINES (7)
C2: ENGINES (7)
DC: ENSIGNS (7)
OT: ASSIGNEE (8)
Score: 13–13 (max 14)

Alistair thinks there might be a 9 hiding in there because of the -ING. There isn't, but there's a darrenic 8 that was missed by all.

Round 3: T B R E I N S O A

C1: beration
C2: BANTERS (7)
DC: BARITONES (18) OBTAINERS (18)
Score: 13–20 (max 32)

But all of a sudden 2 9's come at once, as Gary takes the early lead thanks to Liam's illegal 8.

Round 4: Y O R U T O I M N

C1: MONITOR (7)
C2: MOTION (6)
DC: MUTINY (6)
OT: MONITORY (8)
Score: 20–20 (max 40)

Oh dear, Liam might be happy in getting that 7, and everyone seems to think that 7 is the best here. Maybe a little peek in the dictionary might have been advised.........

MONITORY is an adjective meaning serving to admonish or warn.

Round 5: 50, 75, 2, 5, 5, 4. Target: 311.

C1: 310. (4 x 75) + (2 x 5) (7)
C2: 312. (4 x 75) + 5 + 5 + 2 (7)
RR: 311. ((50 - 2) x 5) - 4 + 75 (10)
Score: 27–27 (max 50)

A tricky numbers game to get spot on, but Rachel shows us how it's done. 8-)

Alistair talks about his "green" lifestyle and how he can't give up meat, so he tells of his despair in poem form. 8-)

Teatime teaser: REDSKATE -> STREAKED

Round 6: D A L E L E H F M

C1: FELLED (6)
C2: fallen
DC: HALLED (6) FEMALE (6) FELLAH (6)
JS: HEALED (6)
OT: DEFAME (6) FLAMED (6) FLEADH (6) HELMED (6) LEAFED (6) MALLEE (6)
Score: 33–27 (max 56)

Oh dear, Gary mistakes the M for an N, and Liam takes the lead for the first time today.

Round 7: S H T U A P N E B

C1: butanes
C2: HASTEN (6)
DC: PEANUTS (7) SUNBATHE (8)
Score: 33–33 (max 64)

DC bask in their darrenic glory as Liam falls for the old butanes trick.

Round 8: J K A Z E O T C W

C1: JACKET (6)
C2: JACKET (6)
DC: TWEAK (5) WACKO (5)
Score: 39–39 (max 70)

And now its time for the contestants to go darrenic. 8-)

Round 9: S I E R T R I S E

C1: RETRIES (7)
C2: RESISTER (8)
Score: 39–47 (max 78)

And Gary now goes solo darrenic to retake the lead.

Susie's Origins Of Words tells of the origins of the various meanings of "hale" and "hail".

Round 10: 100, 4, 9, 8, 10, 6. Target: 508.

C1: 508. ((9 - 4) x 100) + 8 (10)
C2: 508. ((9 - 4) x 100) + 8 (10)
Score: 49–57 (max 88)

Teatime teaser: ACEBLOOD -> CABOODLE

Round 11: L D G A A D E D U

C1: ADDLED (6)
C2: gladed
DC: GLADE (5) LAUDED (6) GADDED (6) GELADA (6)
OT: GLADDED (7) GUDDLED (7)
Score: 55–57 (max 95)

Ouch, gladed might not be in, but if Gary used the 3rd D, then he would have a very good 7 in GLADDED.

To GUDDLE is to to catch fish by groping with the hands, as under rocks or along a riverbank.

Round 12: V M O D A E C O M

C1: CAVED (5)
C2: deacon
DC: COMMODE (7)
Score: 60–57 (max 102)

N-ybody feel a sense of deja vu here :?: :?:

Round 13: A G N E R T O I P

C1: GRANITE (7)
C2: TAPERING (8)
DC: OPERATING (18)
Score: 60–65 (max 120)

And that's another good double DC darren, as Gary retakes the lead again, as we head into the last numbers game.

Round 14: 100, 5, 3, 6, 5, 4. Target: 456.

C1: 461. Mistake in working.
C2: -
RR: 456. (5 + 3 + 6 + 100) x 4 (10)
Score: 60–65 (max 130)

Oh dear, as Gary fails altogether, Liam calls time on his method, even though if he just added the (5 x 5), he'd have got his 7 points, and have the lead going into the conundrum. As it is, he now needs the conundrum to win. Something he hasn't got yet so far...........

Round 15: E D G E D L A T E

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say DELEGATED which is correct.
Final Score: 70–65 (max 140)

Until now, as his quick-fire spot gives him the win. A very up and down game today, and despite both players missing the fairly simple 9's, the tightness of the game made it a very interesting watch.

Liam will be back tomorrow for the last preliminary of the series, which will obviously decide who will be the carryover champion for Series 65, which will begin on June 6.

I'll be back too for the 2nd of my end of series triple bill.

So, till then, bye bye.

And here is that poem:

Tell Them the Truth About Meat

I’d like to be a vegetarian
But the linguistic conspiracy of the barbarian
Carnivore soared to that for as soon as I had learnt to talk and ask what’s on my handy-pandy plate
My mum, my dad so sheepishly said “pork”
And not at that time having a sat in, Latin
I would eat this meat and it was forever too late to think of it as piggy
I wouldn’t have touched beef as I watched Barrier Reef if it had been introduced as ‘moo-cow’ I’m sure neither would you, how could we, although of course I am surprised that I didn’t identify lamb with lambs
Perhaps that’s why our parents sagely gives these animals childish names like ‘baa-lambs’
As far from lamb as ham from pig
It’s all just one big meaty euphemism
A little older I started to eat posher meat
Though still they conceal that veal is really baby cow and I avow I felt pretty queer when I was told the venison I’d just had was deer
But I was old enough by then not to be taken in as I was with bacon in my youth
Why don’t they just tell us the truth?
But tell me, who in this conspiracy thought up sweetbreads
They are far from sweets or bread
I see now, how sometimes language is just balls.

I think they should have given him this book.

I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.
