Countdown recap for Tuesday 3 May 2011.

RE: Champion Roger Edwards (3 wins, 250 points, average 83.)
JJ: Challenger Joe Jenkinson. A man with a massive fan base, it seems. However a quick search on Wikipedia proves, in fact, that he's a nobody. No apterite either. Perhaps Damian has put in a ban on apterites for the time being.
DC: Susie Dent and Alastair Stewart, my favourite guest in Dictionary Corner. He was the first DC guest that I saw.
RR: Rachel Riley, looking as sexy as usual.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: G R N T B E O A Q
R02: L C E U D N A E R
R03: Y T D F N O E I T
R04: L P A O N T A S I
R05: 2, 4, 2, 6, 5, 3. Target: 897.
TTT: AHMUMBLE - "There's no need to mumble the words to this sort of tune."
R06: D L E U P R N I H
R07: G T P S R A E U N
R08: S J N A O T I K T
R09: R U V A D E S M R
R10: 25, 3, 10, 4, 5, 8. Target: 112.
TTT: NEWSKILL - "If calligraphy is your new skill, you'll need these."
R11: I S U M E S T M P
R12: W R A W D E S O B
R13: G E S A L E F D G
R14: 25, 1, 2, 8, 6, 10. Target: 385.
R15: B I M B O S C A T (conundrum)

And I fire up the TOM in the hope it works...... but Spikey broke it permanently. Ah well. We'll manage. DOM's still working, as is DCMC.

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Round 1: G R N T B E O A Q

RE: BANTER (6)
JJ: ORANGE (6)
DC: BORGATE (7) BARONET (7)
OT: NEGATOR (7)
DOM: 0
Score: 6–6 (max 7, DC Max 7)

Lots of Orangey banter there.

Round 2: L C E U D N A E R

RE: CLEANED (7)
JJ: CLEANED (7)
DC: UNCLEARED (18)
DOM: 1
Score: 13–13 (max 25, DC Max 25)

And, that, ladies and gentleman, that is why Alastair Stewart is an unsung hero. He spotted it 11 years ago, but the fire's still there. He spots the phrasing letters and tucks in to some nice points. Last time it was SETTLE to UNSETTLE, this time is CLEARED to UNCLEARED.

Round 3: Y T D F N O E I T

RE: TONED (5)
JJ: FITTED (6)
DC: NOTIFY (6)
OT: ENTITY (6) FOETID (6) TIENTO (6) TINTED (6) TONIFY (6)
DOM: 1
Score: 13–19 (max 31, DC Max 31)

Plenty of sixes to go round there, but Roger struggles to find one and finds himself out of the deadlock and 6 points behind.

Round 4: L P A O N T A S I

RE: SPATIAL (7)
JJ: PLANTS (6)
DC: PIANO (5) PIANOLAS (8)
OT: TALAPOINS (18)
DOM: 2
Score: 20–19 (max 49, DC max 39)

But NO, Roger displays champion status and powers down a 7! SPATIAL means to create more space, as Susie, quite rightly, informs us. Odd though, it's mostly spelt with a C. They're both legal though. Meanwhile another nine goes unspotted (except Chris in the Spoilers forum) and DC lose their max.

Round 5: 2, 4, 2, 6, 5, 3. Target: 897.

RE:"About 400 away."
JJ: -
RR: 900, but unexplained. (7)
OT: 900. (4 + 2) x 6 x (3 + 2) x 5 (7)
Score: 20–19 (max 56, DC max 46)

Roger's 400 away, Joe can't squirm off 0, and Rachel just overdoes it but so has the best solution.

Alastair begins his piece with a mention of things like 3D and HD graphics, which Jeff was talking about at the start. When he did the election for ITV last year, it was shot against a greenscreen. Every moment of it. However, when he first started, weather forecasting was an art form then, and as such, the forecaster had to put letters up on a board. So one day, the forecaster put 3 letters on the board. The "F" then falls down and, bearing in mind this was live, the producer said through the earpiece, "The F's fallen off!" So as the forecaster put the letter back up, he said, "I'm sorry about the F in fog." (Editor's note - try saying that last bit to someone else on a foggy day.)

Teatime teaser: AHMUMBLE -> There's no need to mumble the words to this sort of tune.
Answer: HUMMABLE

Round 6: D L E U P R N I H

RE: RUINED (6)
JJ: PLUNDER (7)
DC: UNDERLIP (8)
DOM: 3
Score: 20–26 (max 64, DC Max 54)

An UNDERLIP is the, well, underlip of a creature whom has a lip under the "proper" lips. Got that?

Round 7: G T P S R A E U N

RE: GRAPES (6)
JJ: PASTURE (7)
DC: SPEARGUN (8)
OT: TREPANGS (8)
DOM: 3
Score: 20–33 (max 72, DC max 62)

Joe pastures himself to a juicy 13-point lead. Mmmmmm. For a cow at least.

Round 8: S J N A O T I K T

RE: TAINTS (6)
JJ: TAINTS (6)
DC: STATION (7)
OT: STOTINKA (8)
DOM: 4
Score: 26–39 (max 80, DC Max 69)

Roger rogers himself to taint Joe and Joe taints back. Meanwhile only Eoin in the spoilers thread achieves the darren.

Round 9: R U V A D E S M R

RE: MURDERS (7)
JJ: MURDERS (7)
DC: DREAMS (6) REMUDAS (7)
OT: EARDRUMS (8)
DOM: 5
Score: 33–46 (max 88, DC Max 76)

Oh dear. and if that wasn't enough, they start MURDERING themselves too. Any bets for BRUTALLY next round?
Well done again to Eoin for getting a pain in the EARDRUMS.

Susie talks about the term "a close shave". This was a literal meaning a long time ago, when barbers would have a hairy time with their patients, and often, blood would come out. Often, barbers were surgeons then (She doesn't delve into this further). The symbol that you saw, and still see, outside barber's shops, was not just a symbol. The red in the spiral represented the blood and the white represented a bandage.

Round 10: 25, 3, 10, 4, 5, 8. Target: 112.

RE: 112. 5 x 25 - 10 - 3 (10)
JJ: 112. 25 x 4 + 10 + 5 - 3 (10)
Score: 43–56 (max 98, DC Max 86)

Welcome to Copycats. Well, nearcopycats.

Teatime teaser: NEWSKILL -> If Calligraphy is your new skill, you'll need these.
Answer: INKWELLS

Round 11: I S U M E S T M P

RR: I sum. That's good for me.

RE: stumpies. 2 things wrong here. Firstly, it's not in, and secondly, it's 8 letters when Roger said it's 7.
JJ: TUMMIES (7)
DC: STEPMUMS (found by RR) (8)
DOM: 6
Score: 43–63 (max 106, DC Max 94)

6 Darrens, DC 12 points off the max, and now Roger is 20 points behind. What could possibly go wrong for Joe now?

Round 12: W R A W D E S O B

RE: BOARDS (6)
JJ: BREADS (6)
DC: SOWBREAD (8)
DOM: 7
Score: 49–69 (max 114, DC Max 102)

Breads is more than one type of bread, and SOWBREADS (sal-br-ed-s) are just another type of bread. 7 Darrens, and DC Max break 100.

Round 13: G E S A L E F D G

RE: FLEDGES (7)
JJ: FLAGGED (7)
DC: EAGLES (6)
OT: DEGAGES (7) SLAGGED (7)
DOM: 7
Score: 56–76 (max 121, DC Max 109)

It's not a winning lead but Roger could salvage a draw here. Meanwhile DC go birdwatching.

Round 14: 25, 1, 2, 8, 6, 10. Target: 385.

RE: 385. (10 + 6) x 25 + (8 x 2 - 1) (10)
JJ: 385. (10 + 6) x 25 + (8 x 2 - 1) (10)
Score: 66–86 (max 131, DC Max 119)

What a good contest, but Joe Jenkinson is our new champion, no matter what Roger can do.

Round 15: B I M B O S C A T

No one buzzes. An audience member, "who looks like Simon Cowell," says BOMBASTIC which is correct.
Final Score: 66–86 (max 141)

Hope you've enjoyed today's recap, and I hope you will enjoy any more to come from me.

Thanks for the wee compliment for STOTINKA, but it was actually Chris who also got EARDRUMS, not me.

As Susie said, SOWBREAD is a variety of cyclamen, and not a type of bread (except for sows :?: :? )
