Apterous FA Cup

Well, since a lot of tourneys have been created recently, I decided to do one.

If I can take 124 ( :o ) people, I will be :D.
If I can take 84 people, I will be :) .
If I can take 64 people, I will be :| .
If I take 32 people, I will be :( . - ✓ :D
If I take 16 people, I will be  . - ✓ :D
If I take 8, I will be :x . - ✓ :D
If I take 4, I will be  . - ✓ :D
If I take 2, I will be  - ✓ :D
And If I take 1, I will be  . - ✓ :D

Yeah....

Single 15 rounder in English.

Oh, and in true FA Cup tradition, the 44 highest players on ProRanks will get a bye into the 3rd round.

EDIT: I will be there if you need an extra number.

I would like to take part in the tournament, as would Thomas Carey who has given me permission to sign him up over the telephone.

Count me in. Are we being assigned teams? If so, can I make sure I get Oxford United by jumping in now, as I know they'll be a very popular choice. :P

No offence, but you have set your expectations too high. There are already 3 tournaments running that people are trying to organise, and I know how hard it is to even organise a single match, never mind 3 or 4.

In.

PS I'm interested to know why 84 teams has any special meaning?

Also Kai, expections schmexpectations, surely. It's not like they're organised by the same person. If people want to play it, they will!

Dan, The FA Cup is not like other Football tournaments. In the first round, 80 teams play. In the second round, 40 teams play. So 20 teams go through to the 3rd round, along with the 20 teams in the premier league and the 24 teams in the Championship (20 + 24 + 20 = 64)
So 64 teams play for 32 spaces, then it's like any other knockout tournament.

Kai, well, I know, but that was my reason for doing it now - everyone else is doing something.

Dan (again), It wasn't what I was thinking of, but you can do it in your head.

Joseph (and Thomas), Sorted. Could Thomas please just confirm it here though. I know I'm nit-picking, but, I like to be a perfectionist.

This. Even with an advert on the front page of apterous, the Masters got 63 players, which is ttbomk a record for a tournament.

Still though, in. :)

Don't get obsessed with having the same format Rhys, you won't be getting 124 players so don't build yourself up for failure.

Set a date (you may have done this already and I haven't noticed), and then of everyone you have that has entered it should be easy to give a few of them byes, leaving a tournament-friendly number to battle it out and quarter the qualifying field before those top players join. I wouldn't recommend choosing your top players already, wait to see who enters (but don't forget to aptomail the top players too to let them know - don't forget Kirk is too cool to check c4c any more).

Hmmmmmm..... Since the number of entrants is increasing rapidly, I'll wait for a bit. If everything dies down a bit, then I'll start.

Kirk looked at it this morning (Last Visit - Sat 12 March 12:09 am.)
I've aptomailed the top.... 25 (excluding Charlie, who made it quite clear he doesn't want to play any more) on Pro Ranks and see what I get.

Oh, and sorry, I just copied the email to the top 25, so can you excuse the c4c bit?
And I've just had a "no" from Bob de Caux.

Nah. I'll lose. UNLESS there's Junior Conundrums??? ...Probably not. Although, if you're extremely desperate and you need just one or two more people, I'll accept. But for now, it's a no thanks.

Definitely, just pick an assortment of teams (mostly Prem and some lower league teams to give Northwich Victoria a chance of lifting the Apterous FA Cup) and assign them randomly.

Basically what Ben said. I'm in, but maybe you should have waited until the Masters was further down the line so people don't have too many tournaments going on at the same time. This is why I set a tournament up to start in May (not that I'm expecting to get 128 entrants; just trying not to clash too much with other tournaments). Sounds fun though; if we are picking our own teams I'd like to represent Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (est. 1882).

You can do whatever you like, but you need to apply to use the actual tournament system as explained on the page. I did that to prevent the tournament overload we are now facing, which I think reduces the accomplishment of winnng them.

 I'll take sign-ups now anyway. Let's say if we've got 124, then I wait for 1 week and start. Or I'll probably schedule it starting sometime in April.

And, just because I'm nicer, I'll let you pick teams. (They don't have to be in the Lower leagues if you're not in the top 44).

Re: Apterous FA Cup

I'm giving you a second chance to listen to me, Rhys! Don't let people pick teams.
Half the reason the AWC worked so damn well was giving people a 'random' team that they could then attach their hopes and loves to - hell, we even had people supporting those teams FOR REAL that they had been chosen to represent for the AWC.

If you let people pick teams, you get a few people who care about what they've been given and by extension nobody else will. And they'll be zero fun/surprise value. Not only that but if you assign them with rankings, you actually get meaningful match ups. It's going to feel weird if some one shit is Man U and someone amazing is Exeter and Exeter end up winning 130-30. Your call of course, but hey.

What Matt said makes sense. If you're going to have seedings then they should be based on Premiership / Championship etc. clubs. I don't mind if I'm randomly assigned or assigned by ranking to a club.

I'd like random. Otherwise it's going to end up with the big teams, quite a few random small ones, and loads missing from the middle.

Or leave them in order of their league position and assign the highest one to to highest rated entrant etc... as has already been suggested.
