(I pity the foo’ who doesn’t) Enjoy the show.

Round 1: C T H E B D A O T

C1: CHATTED (7)
C2: CHATTED (7)
DC: BOTCHED (7) BATCHED (7)
OT: CATHODE (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

4 sevens, and our contestants find the same one to get off to a double max start.

Round 2: Y L T U E L J A L

C1: JELLY (5)
C2: LATELY (6)
DC: LATELY (6)
OT: LUTEAL (6)
Score: 7–13 (max 13)

But our challenger wins this round with the easier of the two sixes.

LUTEAL means relating to a gland of the ovary.

Round 3: W K O U G M T E L

C1: WOKE (4)
C2: MOTEL (5)
DC: MOGUL (5)
OT: GLUME (5) GLUTE (5) GOLEM (5) KUGEL (5) METOL (5) MOULT (5) OLEUM (5) OWLET (5) TOWEL (5)
Score: 7–18 (max 18)

Our challenger’s word is almost spelt out, yet Mary can only find a four. Is she in trouble? Hard to say at this stage.

Round 4: 50, 8, 4, 8, 2, 10. Target: 846.

C1: 848. (2*8*50)+(10*4)+8 (7)
C2: -
CV: 846. ((50+2)*(8+8))+10+4 (10)
Score: 14–18 (max 28)

Nice solve by the Vordermeister, even if it does take her till after the break.

Round 5: P G O E N Y A S V

C1: PANGS (5)
C2: ENVOYS (6)
DC: VOYAGES (7)
OT: NOSEGAY (7)
Score: 14–24 (max 35)

But Susan finds a nice 6, but again Mary is stuck on a five. Have the past two games sapped her strength?

A NOSEGAY is a small bouquet of flowers. How lovely.

Round 6: T D R I E S X D I

C1: DIRTIED (7)
C2: DIRTIES (7)
DC: DIRTIED (7) DIRTIES (7)
OT: DITSIER (7) EDITRIX (7)
Score: 21–31 (max 42)

Not in this round they’ve not, as she finds a nice seven, though it does only equal our challenger.

Round 7: N S H E A L R E Q

C1: LEARNS (6)
C2: HEALERS (7)
DC: HEALERS (7)
Score: 21–38 (max 49)

But she misses the darren, however there is a tiny glimmer of hope on the horizon.

Round 8: 75, 3, 1, 8, 5, 7. Target: 720.

C1: 720. (75-8+5)*(7+3) (10)
C2: 720. Mistake in working.
Score: 31–38 (max 59)

Just what Mary needed, though it was a close shave. Now can she make an amazing comeback worthy of Davies vs. Carson?

Round 9: T I T L E S A L E

C1 buzzes on 4.75 seconds to say SATELLITE which is correct.
Score: 41–38 (max 69)

Yes, she can, as she solves a tricky(ish) conundrum to wrap up a third win. That game had us on the edges of our seats, but unfortunately Susan, who seemed a decent player, won’t be reappearing on our screens.
