Marcus Hares destroyed his opponent yesterday as Ryan Curtis managed to score in just 2 rounds. He is the smooth operator nicknamed "Bunny" from Street in Somerset who loves his tennis and nose piercings.

Graeme Manning who is no doubt shitting himself after yesterday has the task of removing Marcus from the champion's chair today. He's from Bromborough in the Wirral and works as an energy manager. He also supports Everton. Booooo.

Colin Jackson is in the chair for the second time this week and we may even get to learn what his favourite food is today.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: W O I A R C S E L

C1: CALORIES (8)
C2: SCOWLER (7)
OT: CARIOLES (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)

The champion is quick off the mark(us) (ha ha ha) finding a good 8.

Round 2: H G I S O E D R D

C1: SHODDIER (8)
C2: RIDGES (6)
DC: OGREISH (7) DODGIER (7)
Score: 16–0 (max 16)

Another 8 means Marcus storms into a healthy lead after just 2 rounds.

Round 3: L I O A S N J E T

C1: TOENAILS (8)
C2: elations
DC: SALIENT (7)
Score: 24–0 (max 24)

Bunny completes the hat-trick of 8's taking his score to 24 and his opponent is still on 0. Ryan Curtis won't feel so silly now!

Round 4: A I O G R M P E T

C1: MIGRATE (7)
C2: MIGRATE (7)
DC: PORTAGE (7) EPIGRAM (7)
OT: EMPORIA (7) GOATIER (7) RAGTIME (7) POTAGER (7) PRIMATE (7)
Score: 31–7 (max 31)

Finally Graeme gets on the board with the same 7 as Marcus scoring earlier on in the game than Ryan yesterday. Phew.

Round 5: 50, 6, 2, 6, 7, 1. Target: 307.

C1: 307. 50*6+7 (10)
C2: 307. 50*6+7 (10)
Score: 41–17 (max 41)

Again CECIL feels generous in the first numbers game and it's 10 points apiece going into Colin's anecdote.

DC Guest Time: Colin tells us that his idol is Daley Thompson and about the time he was happy when he won a silver medal and went to show Daley it. Daley said he didn't realise they made medals in that colour!

Teatime teaser: NETGROSS -> SONGSTER

Round 6: C A S E T R P U D

C1: PASTURED (8)
C2: CAPTURED (8)
DC: UPRATED (7)
OT: CAPTURES (8) TRADUCES (8)
Score: 49–25 (max 49)

Marcus didn't seem totally confident in his 8 but it's perfectly fine whilst Graeme also has an 8.

Round 7: G O O I R N L E M

C1: MOORING (7)
C2: ROOMING (7)
DC: LOOMING (7) GREMLIN (7)
OT: GLOOMIER (8) OLIGOMER (8)
Score: 56–32 (max 57)

Both of them miss the 8's here though with OLIGOMER being a posh anagram of GLOOMIER but a useful one for adding an S. As it is 7 points for both here and Marcus passes the half century mark.

Round 8: F N D U A R E Q R

C1: REFUND (6)
C2: REFUND (6)
DC: FUNDER (6) ERRAND (6)
OT: DARNER (6) FURRED (6) UNREAD (6)
Score: 62–38 (max 63)

A very flat round of 6's and Marcus is just 1 point off the max!

Round 9: N I E A T B S U T

C1: BUTTIES (7)
C2: BATTIES (7)
DC: INTUBATES (18)
Score: 69–45 (max 81)

This round is more exciting as it throws up a lovely 9 spotted by DC alone. BUTTIES for Marcus nom nom nom and BATTIES (backsides) for Graeme.

Susie's Origins of Words: Susie talks about GUBBINS which were originally scraps of fish but then became the name for a wild and savage race near Dartmoor. Hence GUBBINS became used as a term for things of little value or no importance. Racist.

Round 10: 25, 75, 8, 6, 9, 3. Target: 676.

C1: 676. 9*75+6+3-8 (10)
C2: 676. 9*75+(3*6+8-25) (10)
Score: 79–55 (max 91)

The 2nd numbers game of the afternoon is not much of a challenge and the two of them cruise their way to 10 points heading into the final ad break.

Teatime teaser: WEEDYPAS -> SPEEDWAY

Graeme is very much in contention in this game if only his start wasn't so slow. Can Marcus find a moment of magic to pull away?

Round 11: L E I A T N W E R

C1: WATERLINE (18)
C2: RELIANT (7)
DC: TREENAIL (8)
Score: 97–55 (max 109)

And there is that moment of magic. A tremendous spot effectively ends this game and extinguishes any hope that Graeme had of an upset. Well done, sir.

Round 12: O A D L K I E M T

C1: toadlike
C2: milatode
DC: KELOID (6)
OT: DETAIL (6) DILATE (6) TAILED (6) DIATOM (6) EIDOLA (6) IODATE (6) KILTED (6) MAILED (6) MEDIAL (6) MALOTI (6) MALTED (6) MIKADO (6) MILKED (6) MOATED (6) MOILED (6) MOTILE (6) TALKED (6) TALKIE (6) TOILED (6)
Score: 97–55 (max 115)

Perhaps influenced by that compound 9 Marcus tries for a dodgy sounding 8 (which I also went for). Sadly TOADLIKE^ isn't in the dictionary and neither is Graeme's word. Don't know if this is how he spelt it but it looks like he was just making something up here?

Round 13: V O O A C S T E S

C1: AVOCETS (7)
C2: COASTS (6)
DC: OCTAVES (7)
OT: OCTAVOS (7)
Score: 104–55 (max 122)

AVOCETS (long-legged wading birds) extends Marcus winning lead and he also passes his average score for his last 6 games still with 20 points left to fight for.

Round 14: 25, 75, 100, 8, 2, 2. Target: 844.

C1: 846. 100*8+75-25-2*2 (7)
C2: 846. 100*8+75-25-2*2 (7)
OT: 843. (100+2)*8+25+2 (7)
Score: 111–62 (max 129)

A bit of a harsh pick to go with 3 larges at this stage of the game and funnily enough the target isn't available but they both take the maximum 7 points from it.

Round 15: B E E R D A R T S

No one buzzes. The answer was REDBREAST.
Final Score: 111–62 (max 139)

A pretty tricky conundrum again means Marcus goes another day without solving it and maybe, just maybe, they have been made a little harder this week? Controversial.

7 wins it is though and despite Graeme playing decent in the majority of the game it was the first 3 rounds that well and truly ended the game before it started. A 24 point deficit was too much to catch up and Marcus' superb spot of the 9 letter word put the game beyond doubt.

Marcus is now in the top 8 players for the series and he plays his 8th and final game tomorrow. Does octochampdom await for the Bunny from Street? Find out with James tomorrow.

Byesies.

ALERT!!! I see an erroneous 6 used in that solution there, Ryan.
I think you'll find that Graeme got the 1 by doing ((6 x 3) + 8) - 25.

Maybe you were too busy scoring against my beloved Terriers tonight.

Is this the same Ryan Taylor who played for Newcastle or are there 2 Ryan Taylor's who are pros?

It's a different one.

This is the Newcastle one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Taylo ... born_1984)
Here is the one who scored against us tonight: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Taylo ... born_1988)

P.S.

That makes 674, not 676.

The conundrums on Monday & Tuesday (which neither player found) were both rated as 10 difficulty on apterous - not sure if that's controversial but the first 5 last week were rated 2, 6, 2, 3 & 4.

Maybe not a coincidence. Just putting that out there to stir some shit.
