Muff Diving

A mate of mine has spent the weekend in the town of Muff, Co. Donegal, where the annual festival is taking place.
Sounds like a fun weekend, where everyone enjoys being in Muff. You might even fancy going diving.

There is also the TOP garage or as local people call it "top muff"

This reminded me of a sentence I read in Sherlock Holmes today:
"She pulled a little handkerchief out of her muff and began to sob heavily into it."
What does muff actually mean here?

It's a big furry thing which some ladies have, and they put both their hands into it to keep them warm.

My grandma's muff was so well used it had gone bald.
