COLIN games

I thought it might be a nice idea to put a couple of your own games here that you thought merited a mention - whether a classic or just a fun game. All my games were great (thanks mainly to my opponents) but I realise how important getting conundrums instantly are against the pros of this world. I managed to lose 3 games all on crucial conundrums this year which was slightly disappointing for me. Anyway, here goes with my top game:

KIRK BEVINS vs MARK TOURNOFF

C1: KIRK BEVINS
C2: MARK TOURNOFF
DC: JONO

1) S S R U I E T F J
2) D A X I A R N A L
3) B V S O A O T R E
4) 100, 50, 75, 25, 5, 2 TARGET 550
5) T L Q A O A Z O R
6) S S P A A E R T I
7) D H G A F O E M D
8) 1, 7, 2, 2, 4, 1 TARGET 453
9) COCOAHILL (conundrum)

ROUND 1: S S R U I E T F J
C1: SIFTERS (7)
C2: SURFEITS (8)

0-8 (MAX 8)

ROUND 2: D A X I A R N A L
C1: LANIARD (7)
C2: ARANID (X)

7-8 (MAX 15)

ROUND 3: B V S O A O T R E
C1: BOASTER (7)
C2: BOATERS (7)

14-15 (MAX 22)

ROUND 4: 100, 50, 75, 25, 5, 2 TARGET 550
C1: (100X5)+50
C2: (100X5)+50

24-25 (MAX 32)

ROUND 5: T L Q A O A Z O R
C1: AORTA (5)
C2: AORTAL (X)

29-25 (MAX 37)

ROUND 6: S S P A A E R T I
C1: PARASITES (9)
C2: PARASITES (9)
DC: ASPIRATES (9)

47-43 (MAX 55)

ROUND 7: D H G A F O E M D
C1: HOMAGE (6)
C2: HOMAGE (6)
DC: GODHEAD (7)

53-49 (MAX 62)

ROUND 8: 1, 7, 2, 2, 4, 1 TARGET 453
C1: 252
C2: 252

53-49 (MAX 62)

ROUND 9: COCOAHILL (conundrum)
C2 buzzed on 1 second to say, correctly, ALCOHOLIC.

53-59 (MAX 72)

And so there it was - I had been defeated by Mark Tournoff for my third time despite, yet again, it being very close and for the second time him coming from behind to beat me on the conundrum. Between us all, all the maximums were obtained but I just hoped the 6 small in round 8 proved nicer as I might have been able to secure victory before the conundrum. Nevertheless an entertaining game.

I think I mentioned this to you, but there's the rather nice SATRAPIES in round 6.

Sorry, I don't have my sheets. (They'd be useless anyway, I don't write down the selection or my opponent's offering.)

Same here. I think my game with Conor though, might fall under 2 possible achievements (CT: 69 v JB: 15):

1) Conor got a winning margin of 54 points - not sure if this is the highest.
2) I got a low score of 15 (finally getting off the mark after round 7 ) - not sure if this is the lowest.

My best performance of the day.. well, ever, in a competitive match, joint with the previous game against Jim Bentley where I also missed nothing. In fact, I went 23 maxes in a row, without really playing that well, but consistently. I then lost against Conor.

Some things never change.

I'm glad you decided to post your game against Mark T in the opening post of this thread, Kirk, rather than your game against me. I wouldn't have wanted other people here to have known that I only came up with a three-letter word in the first round I played. Nor that it took four rounds before I got my first points of the day. So, thanks Kirk. :)

I must admit, that wasn't my bast game . I do feel sorry that I wasn't able to give you (or Conor) a closer-called game.

Oh, the irony! :P By the way, the round where you got your 3, there were only two 4s available; the word I got and an obscure 4!

Of course (25-100/50)x9 would be too easy!

Interestingly, I saw that sheet on the table as I was walking round and did it Jono's way. It just jumps out at you - and I'm not being sarcastic for a change!

Agree with Kirk - if there are any more games to post I would like to see how I would do. It's good to test yourself against some of the best that have played the game.

We'd have needed a second conundrum to us split us on your game against Christine.

It didn't for me .

I think if there was a 2 in the selection (instead of the 5) so the sum was (25 - 2) x 9, then I might've got it, because I remember posting about why 2 contestants didn't see the sum (75 + 1) x 9 = 684 on a numbers game (21/01/08).

I think all the four large stuff must get to you in strange ways; in our game, Jono genuinely didn't see the obvious way on this one, but still got it right:

100 75 50 25 9 10 TARGET 137

I did 100 + 50 - 10 - (75/25). Jono's solution was...less obvious. Anyone care to guess?

Going by my game, Jono went up to 5075 so I am probably guessing he started of by saying something like 75 x 100 = 7500.

I guess he used another standard 4 large property:
(50x75)-100 = 3650. 3650/25 = 146. 146-9=137.

And you'd be right! I never looked much at the tricksy things you can do with four large, but when Jono explained the principle behind it, it seemed so obvious. I must have a proper look at Jerry's page sometime...

Is this the link: http://www.jerryh.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ ... umbers.htm

Is there any other sites that might come in handy for learning the techniques with 4 large?

It is the link, yes. I believe MG wrote some stuff on 4 from the top but Jerry's page is the definitive one.

Alternatively, you can pay £5 for Stuart Earl's e-book, which unceremoniously copies this and other pages from around the internet.

I did buy it as I thought it might help but by that stage I had already decided to apply to go on the show and had sought advice from those on the mailing list. A lot of the stuff that Stuart's book covers was covered, and in more detail, from chatting online with other Countdowners and visiting Jerry Humphries' website. My 'miaow' comment was a little tongue in cheek since I believe Jono has a valid point. However, since Stuart plans to use the money for charitable purposes I see it as a bit of a stretch to accuse him of profiteering.

PS I know you aren't accusing him, Julian

He's using the proceeds for charitable purposes is he? Didn't know that. Not sure that Damian did either. Hmmm well, that changes things slightly although, as with you David, I do still think Jono (and Damian) has a point...

I am fairly sure it was for a house-building project in an African country but I cannot remember the specifics so I don't think it matters that there is a religious dimension: it's not as if the money is filling the coffers of Stuart's Church.

To be scrupulously fair, I suppose you could say that about a lot of books now that we're in the internet age... it just depends on how much time you're prepared to spend looking for said information... still, Stuart's promoting of his book does seem to have touched a nerve with a lot of people

Just to get this thread back on track, I'm happy to share the six games I had at COLIN - which was excellently run and thoroughly enjoyable throughout as per usual. I don't have every offering of my opponents to hand, but I have downloaded the brilliant Countmax to check max scores. Will type up the first two and see how bored I am after that! :)

ROUND 9: NECKADMIN (conundrum)
C2 buzzed on 2 seconds to say, correctly, NICKNAMED.

61-57 (MAX 81)

A surprising start, I was very fortunate to catch Mark T cold - and having read half of 'Crucial' so far I doubt he'd prepared for COLIN in the same manner! Only UNHOOKS and WAZIRS(?) missed on the letters though, and with DICTATE they were all darrens. Round 7 was interesting : Mark declared 6 and I got my tactics badly wrong in doing the same - but it didn't prove costly. Zaires is capitalised unfortunately.

After that start, the last thing I wanted was a defeat to Scott "EXITLESS/DONKING" Kenyon...

50-48 (MAX 84)

ROUND 9: KORKPOWER (conundrum)
C2 buzzed on 28 seconds to guess, correctly, POKERWORK.

50-58 (MAX 94)

Oh dear! A fortunate win with a pitiful 3 maxes. I had moderati in the opener but failed to rearrange it for MEDIATOR(or even see a 7?!), and wasn't close to ALIENATES. The game swung hugely on HALATION - which Scott openly admitted to having made up as it "sounds like a word", and "you can have INhalation, so why not halation?" - perfectly logical, except it's to do with the blurring of illuminated images. Having got stuck repeatedly on -KEEPER (which isn't there) on the conundrum, and having broken it down into WORK and POKER, I had a desperate guess at POKERWORK over WORKPOKER - which proved a smart move. Poor Scott - he finally succeeds with a made-up word, only to lose to a conundrum which sums up his job (I'm unsure if that's the actual meaning).

Bed calls - four more to follow.

ROUND 9: KIRKSNASH (conundrum)
C2 buzzed on around 14 seconds to say, correctly, SHARKSKIN.

47-65 (MAX 75)

My third career game against Kirk, the third time I'd held a single-figure lead going into the conundrum, but the first time I'd won. Kirk was less than a second behind me on the conundrum as well - so it couldn't have been closer. Underlie and admitted were disappointing misses for both sides - and I've never heard of cenacle.

A chance to make it 4 from 4 immediately followed:

ROUND 9: JEDIDINOS (conundrum)
C2 buzzed on 6 seconds to guess something a bit wrong.
C1 buzzed on 7 seconds to guess, correctly, DISJOINED.

67-42 (MAX 82)

Not the best game from either player once more. Round 6 was particularly terrible - both players had spotted a final A gave FACTORIAL, but were thrown by the E to the point where even DesO would've outscored us.

Two inevitable defeats to come...

The annoying thing with the above game was that we both wanted an N for UNDERLINE and then when it didn't come out, I had forgotten all about UNDERLIE. Grr. Never mind.

Nerdled? Were you possibly thinking of nurdled, the tiddlywinking term for a wink which has landed so close to the pot that it can't be potted? http://www.tiddlywinks.org/lexicon/lexicon_k_to_o.html

I think it's also a cricketing term, when the batsman tries to accumulate a score with small shots worth only one or two runs each.

Yes likewise. And it's good to see that some of you were beatable at least! Those performances from Kirk and Jono towards the top of this thread are a bit scary-good...

Thankyou for posting my DC game and game against DanVan(Cig) rather than the one where you totally arse-raped me (Unless you plan to do it next!) In case anyone wondered the conundrum solution I offered was JOINDISED!

unless I plan to arse-rape you next? You're safe mate, I'm not that way inclined. No, I don't like to post games where I win by loads - it's no fun for the other player. Tighter games are where it's at although on the day I wasn't saying that!

EDIT: I've just reread your message - it was Dan Van who posted those games and not me!

Dinos, do you remember what words/number solutions you got in our game? I have come across the scores and it was a close-call game that was decided on a crucial conundrum, that might be worth posting here?

Not off hand. I remember getting DACOITS where you got VIADUCTS but thats about it. If you emailed me the letter selections I could probably remember.

Whoops that was a bad choice of words! I assumed it was you that posted as you did some earlier. My bad.

Well it took a while, but here are the two defeats that put me back in my place. Firstly though, in response to previous comments:

Kirk - Pretty sure I saw UNDERLIE, but in a moment of stupidity decided it wasn't a word. There was a point soon after where I thought "Hang on, I don't have a 7...". :)

Mike & Ben - The "nerdled" I was risking was in the cricket sense - although I couldn't remember that at the time, I was confident I hadn't made it up. Bit surprised it wasn't in, but then there's still no respotted...

Julian: I trust you are not considering me as a "beatable" player! ;)

Dinos: I do have the notes from the "raping" Kirk gave you, and am happy to type it up if requested.

Conor/Chris Wills: I have the notes from your game too, but I won't write-up anything not involving me without permission.

Anyway, here goes:

41-62 (MAX 87)

Well, when you play an all-time great, the last thing you want is a poor start. The conundrum made the score seem remotely respectable, but the gulf in talent was clear. That said, Chris missed a few words himself - so it could've been even worse.

Still, the COLIN 08 title could yet be won with 5 victories, so I got my defeat to Conor out of the way:

ROUND 9: GIVENSORE (conundrum)

49-65 (MAX 70)

Some flat letters rounds kept me in touch through to a crucial conundrum, but short of a Hansford there was only ever going to be one winner. Those "stunning" performances just about got me 5th place though - woohoo! :D

This was my closest called game of the day. After spotting VIADUCTS, I was able to keep my lead right up until the second numbers game, where I picked 4 large (even though throughout the day I had been crap at 4 large ) and lost the lead, therefore going to a crucial conundrum. The conundrum was close called as we both smacked down at the same time but it was decided that Dinos was first and got SUFFOCATE for the win.
