Spoilers For Tuesday January 26th 2010

Well, yet again we have a new champion in James. James seems to be a good name for people who win on Countdown. I can't actually think of the last time that a person called James lost on his first show.

Having said that, it could easily have been me.

This new champion looks like he can stay the distance and have a chance at octochampdom, but we've got a good while to wait yet. Let's see if he can stand the test of his new challenger today.

75 -(4x5) = 55
55 x 10 = 550
550 - 9 + 1 = 542

BEMOANS also in the MOPANES round

WEAPONED was there in the WEAPONS round for a DC beater. Odd that nobody has commented on that yet.

The champion looks good with sexy spots such as MOPANES and JOUNCES. He's not on apterous so it's interesting to see if he's merely picked these words up from youtube or from the show itself.

Can he not just, crazy as this sounds, know the words?

No. JOUNCES may have been a guess, but MOPANES? Nah.

Regarding DEPICTER, these -OR and -ER word endings are very confusing. How do you know when to use -OR and when to use the -ER ending??? Is there any set rule? Maybe one of the wordsmiths knows and will tell us the great secret. ;)

No. Most are -OR, but you have to remember those that take -ER too/instead. RELATER/RELATOR are both in, for instance, but CREATER isn't whereas CREATOR is.

He could also be a Scrabble player, or maybe an Apterite under an assumed name.

Ah righto, cheers Kirk.

That would be fine.
Unfortunately, there were 2 P's in that selection and only 2 E's.

Alternative to 2nd numbers:

75 - 25 = 50, 10 + 4 = 14, 14 x 50 = 700, 700 + 4 = 704

You must have made a mistake with your letter noting James.

Really, most? I'm sure I'm not alone in considering -ER to be the "default" agent nouneriser.

Where the word ends with a phonic A sound, negAtor, it tends to be -OR.

ADAPT takes it both ways.

I always thought an ADAPTER is a person who adapts (himself or something else) and an ADAPTOR is an inanimate object used to connect two pieces of machinery or electronics.

IYSS.
I never bother to check out the meaning of words in this context.

I was only trying to find an exception to Damian's rule.

I still stand by my comment since it was initially about DEPICTER.

-ER is the most common agent noun suffix. Was just highlighting that -OR tends to follow the 'A' words, legAtor, negAtor, demonstrAtor etc.

Yep. Good - we agree!
