ARTLEPOOL

One night last week a few of us were in Aptochat (Kirk, Paul, DOD, Innis, Chris, James Hurrell and Shaun Hegarty) giving out scrambles to some tougher words for others to solve. I think the festivities can be found here, here (in particular), and here.

The series final conundrum looked quite familiar (someone told me Chris said he wasn't sure where he'd seen it before), so I checked back in the logs and found this excerpt:

Code: Select all

2009-11-12 00:00:44 Simon Myers: LOPROLATE
2009-11-12 00:00:50 Ian Dent: well played
2009-11-12 00:00:51 Innis Carson: Don't like the word though
2009-11-12 00:00:51 Paul Howe: grr plurals
2009-11-12 00:01:15 Paul Howe: allotrope
2009-11-12 00:01:19 Simon Myers: nice one
2009-11-12 00:01:19 Innis Carson: Oh yeah
2009-11-12 00:01:20 Kirk Bevins: nice one
2009-11-12 00:01:25 Andrew Herbertson is shooting for Star 10 of The Anaesthetist's Avenue.
2009-11-12 00:01:30 Paul Howe: MANIFIZE?
2009-11-12 00:01:30 David O'Donnell: nice nice
2009-11-12 00:01:36 Innis Carson: feminazi
2009-11-12 00:01:36 Chris Davies: feminazi
2009-11-12 00:01:39 Kirk Bevins: wow.
2009-11-12 00:01:40 Paul Howe: yes
It amuses me to think I pre-empted the Series 61 Grand Final conundrum just one week before filming. I wonder if Chris learnt it (or had his memory refreshed) from here?

Also I think Kirk told me that Damo might have decided to use the conundrums in a different order - might that have had big consequences had it come up in the Davies/Carson semi (FTR I seem to recall Innis saying he'd spotted ALLOTROPE in the audience before Chris had buzzed, lack of game pressure notwithstanding)?

It's funny how such big games could potentially be decided by minutiae like an hour spent mucking about in Aptochat late one night.

Another strange coincidence is Charlie asked me what the only ODE 8 letter word is that ends in -CREW is. I guessed AIRSCREW and Charlie confirmed I was right. The next day in one of Davies' games (I think) AIRSCREW/AIRCREWS came up as a contestant beater and I hadn't heard of AIRSCREW before and managed to spot it. Thanks Charlie.

Ah yeah, I think that was the Hulme/Taylor semi-final AIRCREWS came up in as Chris and I were watching that one from the side.

And actually I didn't get ALLOTROPE before Chris even from the audience, so especially well done to him.

Haha. Rendering Damian's anti-practising device entirely pointless. Lucky it wasn't crucial...

Ditto. ;)

EDIT: lol. Just realised my 500th post is simply saying 'ditto'. Bit of an anticlimax but at least I'm agreeing with something! :P
