Countdown recap for Tuesday 10 November 2009.

C1: Champion Ryan Taylor (3 impressive wins.) a fellow apterite who thus far has shown impressive ability at the game with words like XYLEM and FILAGREE, but has stumbled across some slightly tough opponents who have somewhat dampened his points total. He studies History at Hull University and likes Stephen Fry.
C2: Challenger Lesley Hines, another apterite and guesthouse proprietor at The Shrubbery. She's married to Richard and likes tudor history, and thinks Japanese food is disgusting, or sushi says.
DC: Susie Dent and funny guy Tim Vine.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Today's game is highly anticipated and has been quoted as being "between 2 players" so watch out. It's bound to be a scorcher. Without further a Jew here's today's game:

Round 1: E N O E M T D R A

C1: MODERATE (8)
C2: dementor
DC: MENTORED (8)
OT: NEMATODE (8)
Score: 8–0 (max 8)

Ouch! DC point out a small letter switcharoo could have gained Lesley 8 points.
A NEMATODE is a microscopic, elongated, cylindrical, parasitic worm that lives in water and soil.

Round 2: W I P E H O G T W

C1: WIPE (4)
C2: WHITE (5)
DC: EIGHT (5) WEIGHT (6) (RR)
Score: 8–5 (max 14)

Not Ryan’s best word to date as Lesley claws back a miserable 5 points. Forget what I said earlier. This game is a complete shit. I’m off.

Round 3: I S E A M R D N A

C1: MARINADES (18)
C2: MARINADES (18)
Score: 26–23 (max 32)

...but oh wait! Both contestants pull out an impressive 9. The game’s back on!

Round 4: R E T O J E S B U

C1: JOUSTER (7)
C2: JOUSTER (7)
DC: TUBEROSE (8) which Susie informs us is a Mexican plant.
Score: 33–30 (max 40)

Round 5: 75, 3, 10, 8, 6, 4. Target: 304.

C1: 304. (75+10-6-3)x4 (10)
C2: 304. (75+10-6-3)x4 (10)
Score: 43–40 (max 50)

Both players solve an easy numbers and it looks like this could be a high scoring affair. Before the break Tim tells us about his comedy tour The Joke-o-motive.

Teatime teaser: STIRBEEF -> BRIEFEST

What a lovely teaser clue. Kudos Damo.

Round 6: Z A T E D O C N A

C1: COATED (6)
C2: COATED (6)
DC: CADENZA (7) is a virtuoso solo passage in a piece of music
OT: DOZEN (for 12, Tim)
Score: 49–46 (max 57)

Round 7: A S E O Q A P D O

C1: SOAPED (6)
C2: SOAPED (6)
DC: POSADA (6)
OT: ESPADA (6) is a Spanish sword
Score: 55–52 (max 63)

Hold the phone. Haven’t we had POSADA not so long ago? In fact it’s the same selection as yesterday’s round 1 bar 1 letter. Let’s just put it down to coincidence…

Round 8: S A D I T R O N E

C1: NOTARISED (18)
C2: ORDINATES (18)
DC: DERATIONS (18) Jeff’s amazed that the round yields 3 different 9s and Susie says there may be even more. NO! They’re the only 3 and that is categorically true!
Score: 73–70 (max 81)

Also if the S were a W this would be yesterday’s round 2. How odd….

Round 9: A G Q I U I N O Y

C1: QUOIN (5)
C2: QUANGO (6)
DC: QUINOA (6)
OT: OUGIYA (6) YOGINI (6)
Score: 73–76 (max 87)

QUOIN again too??? Not to mention 2 Qs just like yesterday. There’s definitely some freaky shit going on here.

Lesley reverses the 3 point sway with QUANGO which stands for quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation. QUINOA pronounced (keen-wah) was an essential foodstuff in one of Carol’s detox thingies.

Round 10: 50, 6, 8, 1, 4, 1. Target: 414.

C1: 414. (50+1)x8+6 (10)
C2: 414. (50+1)x8+6 (10)
Score: 83–86 (max 97)

Teatime teaser: RIPSJUNE -> JUNIPERS

Round 11: I S E A N L O N Y

C1: ANNISOL (7)
C2: INSANELY (8)
DC: LYONNAISE (18)
OT: SOLANINE (8)
Score: 83–94 (max 115)

What a great 9! LYONNAISE is a method of cooking with white wine and onion sauce. Lesley’s 8 is enough to put her out of conundrum-striking-distance (or CSD) should she maintain her lead until then…

Round 12: B E M I X E L T O

C1: BOLETE (6)
C2: BELIE (5)
DC: MOBILE (6)
OT: EMBOLI (6) MOTILE (6)
Score: 89–94 (max 121)

...but Ryan claws back with BOLETE, a variant of boletus which is a type of toadstool.

Round 13: E F U I T C P R K

C1: PICTURE (7)
C2: PICKET (6)
OT: CUPRITE (7) PRICKET (7) TRUCKIE (7)
Score: 96–94 (max 128)

…and takes the lead again as Lesley fails to find a 7. Here begins my quest to get a new word for foreplay into the dictionary because everyone loves a good old “PREFUCK”

Round 14: 75, 1, 8, 4, 6, 1. Target: 751.

C1: 751. (6+4)x75+1 (10)
C2: 751. (6+4)x75+1 (10)
Score: 106–104 (max 138)

Another standard numbers fails to settle the game and it comes down to a crucial conundrum with both players already over 100! I am so cunting excited…

Round 15: P R A W N I E S T

C1 buzzes on 10 seconds to say INTERSWAP which is incorrect.
C2 does not buzz.
Jeff picks out some random ugger in the audience who gives the answer RAINSWEPT.
Score: 106–104 (max 148)

Alas Ryan’s memoraid PAINTERS + SHAWOMBY failed to secure him his first conundrum and he could only pray as he watched the seconds trickle by. Fortunately for him it eluded Lesley and he lives to fight another day. It’s a shame Lesley came across someone so strong on her first game but from an entertainment standpoint this has been the greatest Countdown spectacle since the S60 SF Bevins vs Zussman IMHO. Also I have it in writing that Lesley will definitely get another chance. Yay!

I had it as SHWAMBY, basically because I cant spot these 9's like I would with TRAPESING, PATRONISE etc.
