Apterous Winter Closed 2009 (last minute register)

Registrations are now open for the 2009 edition of the Apterous Winter Closed tournament. I'm trying not to step on Charlie too much with the timing, but I want to get this done before Christmas, so here we go.

There is a basic home page for this tournament out there on the internet (which is where matches will be posted, etc.)

Basic dates to remember:
  • Guaranteed registration closes in one week (Friday, November 6). Registrations received after that will be accepted on a space-available-only basis.
  • The tournament will start Sunday, November 8, and will run five or six weeks depending on turnout. You will have one match scheduled each week (Sunday -- Saturday), except perhaps the last week when an extra finals match may be scheduled.
Things that are different from the Summer Open:
  • It's a closed tournament -- you will be placed in a flight based on your rating as of earlier today when I got the ratings list from Apterous. The Championship Flight is open to people with ratings above 1300; Flight A is open to people with ratings between 900 and 1300; and Flight B is open to those with ratings below 900.
  • If a flight is using a Swiss system pairing, I will use Dubov pairings to try to even out strength-of-schedule issues. My preference this time will be to use pool-play, prelim-and-playoff style matches where available.
  • Points per game is gone as a tiebreaker.
  • For Swiss matches that are unplayed, I will try to get cross-round pairings working if possible on the last day (Saturday) of the week. If you haven't played/scheduled a time by late in the week, I may be getting in touch with you.
ALSO: I will run a side event, the "Speed Demon" tournament, open to all. Each match will be two games of speed-9; since this is supposed to be quick, I may well schedule people for more than one of these in a week if necessary; to make that feasible, this tournament will have games scheduled well in advance.

You can register for either or both of these tournaments in this thread.

Me, please, Andrew, for both! :)

Great idea to start on a Sunday. Then those who tend to be around mainly at the weekend, won't have to wait till the last minute to do their games.

Could I please put in a request that people PM each other before the Tuesday, to schedule their games?
From my experience in previous tournaments, some members (mentioning no names!) are better than others at replying to PMs.
Availability is one thing, but it really is annoying to be left hanging till the end of the week without even knowing when the game will be played.
Those whose games ended up not being played probably feel even more strongly about this. It really does matter, and affects the enjoyment of a tournament.

Yes please. At 1307 I can be the runt of the Championship players, so coming anywhere but last is a positive result. Cool. I'll probably still come last though.

I'll even give the speedy version a go, even though speed games scare me.

Everybody above this line should be entered as appropriate. You can check the current registrations at the web site above.

If you can get the magic blue tournament interface up, Charlie, I'll at least try it out on the speed tournament. (I don't know whether you have best-of-3 built in ready to go, but the speed tournament uses the same number of games each time.)

And thanks as ever Feisty. I'm on the website where expected so thumbs all the way up from me.

A reminder that if you register by the end of tomorrow, you will be entered; after that, only as space permits. Currently we have 15 people in the Championship Flight, 24 in Flight A, 6 in Flight B (so we definitely still have room there), and 28 in the Speed Demon.

Alas and alack, 886 puts you in flight B instead.

Currently, we have 15 in the Championship Flight, 23 in Flight A, and 7 in Flight B, along with 29 in the Speed Demon. That means that, on a first-come first-serve basis until about 10pm today or so, I can take:
  • 1 or 3 people in the Championship Flight
  • 1 person in Flight A
  • some odd number of people in Flight B
  • 1 or 3 people in the Speed Demon

Nuts, i thought i was being smart by waiting til i was above 900 to register.
Andrew Feist wrote: # 1 person in Flight A

Well, if you still have uneven numbers when you need to get cracking, you can take it that i'd be happy to up the level. (think i'm at 96-odd at moment)

It appears we will have to do this. (Based on rating, it makes more sense to move you up than someone down from the A.)

It looks like a completely forgot go sign up for this. I think I was originally in the process of posting a few days ago, but must have got distracted. If you need another player in the top flight to even out the numbers, I'd be happy to be that person, but if its full up then I understand.
