And MIRAGES and LOAMIER.

The standard of gameplay isn't the highest, but I'm really enjoying the banter on today's show. Penny is a really entertaining DC guest; I've never been much aware of her on TV before as I don't watch in the mornings, but her sense of humour and rapport with Jeff are excellent.

Did they serve free drinks to the audience or something?

Most of the stuff they're laughing at even Dudley wouldn't bother with normally. It's a bit surreal.

Well done Steve on becoming an octochamp and was nice to give Chris Davies a plug but I'm sure Innis and Andrew are a bit pissed off you ignored their abilities.

I can't help but notice today's challenger's ambition: to become a Countdown octochamp. With 3 4 letter words during the course of the programme (record?) his ambition surely was a tough one.

Yea, I too thought it sounded forced.
There has been a recent tendency towards pretend-laughter, which tends to result in the viewer laughing
(or even smiling) less.

Not sure what pretend-laughter is. Either they laugh or they don't. If they don't you won't hear anything, if they do then you will. If you're suggesting it's 'canned' laughter then it's not. Am sure James Robinson can testify to this, he was there wasn't he?

Edit - i know he wasn't, i was being silly.

No, I'm not suggesting that.

I got the impression that some of the reasons for the laughter today may have not made the edit

Oh, well i'll have to have a listen out for it. Never noticed anything different this end.
Wonder if it's Dudley holding them at gun-point?

On some shows the audience are prompted as to where they should laugh. It is fair that people who have never been to see Countdown recorded would assume that that show is the same.

There was a suspicious sound cut out at around 31 minutes just after Penny Smith spoke of how much she enjoys a grilled snapper.
