COLEI2 games

Post by Kirk Bevins »

I thought I'd start the thread where you can post the games you were perhaps proud of or just wanted to share with other people to take part in.
I will start by posting the final which was a 15 rounder between the players who finished positions 1 and 2 (both on 3 wins out of 3). We tossed off, so to speak, and I won the toss and, playing Jono, I decided to sit in the challenger's chair.

Countdown recap for Saturday 10 October 2009 at COLEI2.

C1: Champion Jon O'Neill (3 wins)
C2: Champion Kirk Bevins (3 wins)
DC: Charlie Reams and Simon Myers.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: R L N I E O K E G
R02: C R V E A E S U N
R03: N C H E O E N U L
R04: S N C E E E E E S
R05: 100, 50, 75, 25, 2, 8, . Target: 608.
R06: L R D A E E L E U
R07: P S N O E A I N S
R08: R L T E U I D N S
R09: S N S A E A V E Q
R10: 75, 8, 3, 9, 1, 2, . Target: 195.
R11: P X L S I A E L E
R12: B M R I U O Q D R
R13: D N J O E A I N P
R14: 8, 6, 9, 3, 5, 7, . Target: 402.
R15: I F F U D I N O S (conundrum)

Round 1: R L N I E O K E G

C1: REEKING (7)
C2: LEERING (7)
OT: KEELING (7) KEROGEN (7) REELING (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Round 2: C R V E A E S U N

C1: UNCREASE (8)
C2: UNCREASE (8)
Score: 15–15 (max 15)

Round 3: N C H E O E N U L

C1: LUNCHEON (8)
C2: COHUNE (6)
Score: 23–15 (max 23)

A good spot in my opinion to go 8 ahead. Turns out that nearly half the room spotted it.

Round 4: S N C E E E E E S

C1: ESSENCE (7)
C2: SCENES (6)
DC: SENESCE (7)
Score: 30–15 (max 30)

Now this was a good spot - I almost swore SCENES was the max and pretty much stopped looking. 5 Es, I mean, what!?

Round 5: 100, 50, 75, 25, 2, 8. Target: 608.

C1: 608. ((2x25/50)+75)x8 (10)
C2: 608. (2x100x75/25)+8 (10)
Score: 40–25 (max 40)

Luckily for me Jono's choice of 4 large was pretty straightforward.

Round 6: L R D A E E L E U

C1: ALLURED (7)
C2: ALLURED (7)
OT: DUELLER (7)
Score: 47–32 (max 47)

Round 7: P S N O E A I N S

C1: PENSIONS (8)
C2: SAPONINS (8)
Score: 55–40 (max 55)

Round 8: R L T E U I D N S

C1: INSULTED (8)
C2: LUSTRINE (8)
OT: DILUENTS (8) UNLISTED (8) DILUTERS (8) STUDLIER (8) INSULTER (8) INTRUDES (8) NURDIEST (8) TENDRILS (8) TRUNDLES (8) UNDERLIT (8)
Score: 63–48 (max 63)

Round 9: S N S A E A V E Q

C1: SEVENS (6)
C2: SEVENS (6)
OT: AVENSES (7)
Score: 69–54 (max 70)

And Jono's max game is off. Unlucky.

Round 10: 75, 8, 3, 9, 1, 2. Target: 195.

C1: 195. (3x2+9)x8+75 (10)
C2: 195. (3+2+1+9)x8+75 (10)
Score: 79–64 (max 80)

I decided, despite being 15 behind, to just go 1 large. I thought with Jono's numbers prowess if I went 6 small and I messed it up I could be 22 behind or even 25 behind which'd mean I'd never catch up. With 1 large I'd probably stay 15 behind and I'll try to beat him on a letters round in the next 3.

Round 11: P X L S I A E L E

C1: expells
C2: ELLIPSE (7)
Score: 79–71 (max 87)

Jono ballses up his spelling of EXPELS and so my gamble paid off, I was only 8 behind now. I needed to keep this gap until the conundrum.

Round 12: B M R I U O Q D R

C1: DUMBO (5)
C2: QUIM (4)
OT: MORBID (6)
Score: 84–71 (max 93)

Damn. Just one round and I decide to declare a comedy four, sorry Kai. If only I'd seen the 5 or 6...

Round 13: D N J O E A I N P

C1: PINNED (6)
C2: PANINO (6)
DC: PINNAE (6)
OT: ADJOIN (6) DINNAE (6) ENDIAN (6) ENJOIN (6) JOINED (6) OPINED (6) PONIED (6) PAINED (6) PANNED (6) PENNIA (6)
Score: 90–77 (max 99)

A pretty flat round so I'm still 13 behind, argh.

Round 14: 8, 6, 9, 3, 5, 7. Target: 402.

C1: 402. 9x8x5+6x7 (10)
C2: 402. (8+7-6)x5x9-3 (10)
Score: 100–87 (max 109)

My plan of 6 small at this point to get back in the match didn't pay off.

Round 15: I F F U D I N O S

C2 buzzes on 1 second to say DIFFUSION which is correct.
Score: 100–97 (max 119)

I nail the conundrum instantly to lose by just 3 points. Damn MORBID/DUMBO. So, yeah, that's right, I bottled it again and I felt more nerves here than I did in the series final - madness.

Well played to Jono who is a credit to the game and thanks to Jeff for an exciting finale to the day.

Countdown recap for COLEI game 4 - The battle for 3rd place.

C1: Champion Ben "The Nebagram" Wilson (3 wins out of 3, 3rd seed.)
C2: Champion Dinos "The Funny Guy" Sfyris (3 wins out of 3, 4th seed.)
DC: Kirk Bevins and Jon O'Neill of Essex.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: D A V I L O D O O
R02: N R S A O U B E R
R03: R S T T I E A I L

R08: 2, 9, 9, 7, 6, 50. Target: 786.
R09: N U T P L I Q U E (conundrum)

I don't hold a very good track record against Ben. He thoroughly whooped me at the last COLEI so was pretty sure he had this game in the bag.

Round 1: D A V I L O D O O

C1: VALID (5)
C2: ovoidal
OT: LADDOO (6) (Karen) OVOLO (5) (Charlie) DILDO (5) (Alec)
Score: 5–0 (max 6)

Oops. I was hoping for a final N to yield a spicy 8. I saw ovoidal at the death and made a split-second decision to risk it which didn't pay off. Neb's offering meanwhile was VALID while mine was only valid in French.

Round 2: N R S A O U B E R

C1: BURNERS (7)
C2: UNROBES (7)
DC: SUBORNER (8)
OT: BOURNES (7) etc
Score: 12–7 (max 14)

A great spot from DC. A SUBORNER is someone who offers a bribe.

Round 3: R S T T I E A I L

C1: LISTERIA (8)
C2: LITERATI (8)
DC: LAIRIEST (8)
OT: SLITTIER (8) TRIALIST (8)
Score: 20–15 (max 22)

Round 4: 6, 50, 1, 75, 25, 100. Target: 822.

C1: 823. Mistake in working.
C2: 825. (6+100/25+1)x75 (7)
OT: 822. (100+(75-1)/(50/25))x6 (10)
Score: 20–22 (max 32)

Neb makes an uncharacteristic slip-up and lends me a lifeline.

Round 5: T S E E T O D P A

C1: postdate (its capitalised)
C2: TOASTED (7)
DC: ADOPTEES (8)
Score: 20–29 (max 40)

This time it's Neb who makes the invalid gamble, but he's still within striking distance.

Round 6: N A E L K M U I P

C1: UNALIKE (7)
C2: IMPANEL (7)
OT: MANIPLE (7) MANLIKE (7) PIKEMAN (7)
Score: 27–36 (max 47)

Round 7: H L T E E N I U C

C1: CENTILE (7)
C2: LEUCINE (7)
OT: CUTLINE (7) TUNICLE (7) ELENCHI (7) Kai had LEUCITE (7) but this doesn't come up automatically
Score: 34–43 (max 54)

Round 8: 2, 9, 9, 7, 6, 50. Target: 786.

C1: 787. (9+6)x(50+2)+7 (7)
C2: 785. (9+7)x50-9-6 (7)
RR: 786. (9x9+50)x6 (10) (Jeff)
Score: 41–50 (max 64)

A tricky-ish numbers evades us both and so it comes down to a crucial conundrum...

Round 9: N U T P L I Q U E

C2 buzzes on 1 second to say QUINTUPLE which is correct.
Score: 41–60 (max 74)

Luckily I spotted it straight away as Neb was there a second afterwards. Effectively I take home bronze and the dubious honour (I think) of being the first undefeated player at a CO-event that didn't win the whole thing!

Here are the stats:

I didn't keep full record of my games, I can't remember all of my opponents declarations, else i would have submitted recaps for some of mine.

Anyone know what the max score was in game 3?
Im not sure if 5 (ROVER, ERROR etc.) was the max in rd 3, and I don't know what tool you use to find the max available in each round.

Congratulations, Matt, on winning such a close game!
I really should practice Conundrums (I'm always saying that!) ;)

It should be noted here that HEADLAMPS is an anagram of LAMPSHADE. Those that buzzed with HEADLAMPS were given the points.

I've input my points total onto the wiki page:

http://wiki.apterous.org/CoLei2

Derek said on apterous chat that he would appreciate it if others would do the same, or let him know what their totals were. :D

BTW, I didn't include the practice round score, or should I have done?? :?:

Ah I didn't get a max game, Julie, as 544 is possible. (75+100/50)x7+5. Frustratingly easy.

Julie - thanks for posting the recaps. That looks right for our game.
Btw - there's s/th wrong with the wiki page. Am fairly sure Karen Pearson can't have finished 15th, as I was beaten in the 15th/16th place play-off by Steve Wood. (That's a different Steve Wood to the one who has appeared on Countdown recently.)

There's not a lot of data on the page yet. I dare say it'll sort out correctly once there is. :)

Yep, seems as if the organizer, Jeff is the only person who kept a record of the final scores. The Wiki shows what we have so far.

Interestingly, I have just discovered that the day this event took place was also the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Edinburgh Countdown Club.

I got 82, 71, 71 and 56 in my games, so you can add those up and put it next to my name if you like.
Ill also try and ask Josh where he came and how many points he accumulated.

Edit: I got 56, not 65 in my last game, it was a typo.

Sorry Matt, I guessed I was about 15th. Maybe it was 17th??? Or 13th?? I'm afraid I don't pay too much attention to these things.

Probably 13th, Karen, but I wouldn't worry about it either way. I didn't even write down my scores, so I'm not the kind to get het up by these sorts of things.

Yeah, the ladies were in the audience yesterday wearing their Edinburgh Countdown Club jumpers and one of them got the conundrum and got on TV (shows to be aired w/c 9/11). She commented they came to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

Excellent! Did they rope you in to competing in their next club verses champion event?

Nice. They asked if I'd like to go along at some point and I'd said I'd love to. I also said in front of the whole audience that there's nothing better to do in Edinburgh ;) . They didn't like me much after that.
