Friday 25 September 2009. Seies 61, Prelim 50

Post by Allan Harmer »

Countdown recap for Friday 25 September 2009.

C1: Champion Jefrey Burgin (7 wins, 612 points.)
Oxford bound Jeffrey has played solidly throughout his run and is a tough nut to crack. He is yet another successful product of the apterous training school, which has produced a high perecntage of the recent Octochamps and he looks nailed on to join them if he keeps up this standard.
C2: Challenger Richard Moody.
Not much in Jeff's intro other than Richard is married with two girls and a boy. He tells an engaging tale about missing the train on the way back from having dinner on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in 'Heartbeat Country'. I must confess that we visited Goathland and had a look at what we know as Aidensfield station when we stayed at Robin Hood Bay a few years ago. It is in a lovely setting. We later learn that Richard is a Doctor and is the second one on this week.

DC: Susie Dent and Colin Murray.
I have warmed to Colin and he is rapidly becoming a star turn in Dictionary Corner. He clearly has a passion for the Game and is developing a great rapport with the contestants.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Score: 73–55 (max 112)
A spirited revival from Richard and he is making the score look much more respectable.
Round 15: V E G A N B R I E

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say BEREAVING which is incorrect.
A reasonable attempt by Jeffrey, who has struggled a bit with the Conundrums. A few seconds later Jeffrey smiles ruefully when he gets the solution and realises how close he was. The honour of getting it goes to a lady who seems to have the only hand raised in the auduience
C2 does not buzz.
The answer was BEAVERING.

Score: 73–55 (max 122)
Well done to Jeffrey, who looks relieved that it is all over. He was far more superior to Richard than the final score indicated and we look forward to seeing him in the Grand Finals ( He is currently 4th seed) along with Chris, Innis, Andrew and probably Bob too.

I think it's worth a mention here that BEREAVING is in fact a correct solution to the conundrum and 10 points will be added to his tally.

Good point Kirk - I thought it was harsh that they didn't correct it on the edit.
